I too have "stuff" in Trello, Evernote, Airtable, yada, yada, yada. Notion looks really appealing to consolidate everything in one place. It seems like the biggest challenge is deciding on the database structure. How did you come up with your layout? When working on a research project where do you keep all the related documents like your Research Notes, Proof Summary, etc. It doesn't seem that Notion offers the rich formatting available in Word to automatically create footnote annotations. So I would still have documents outside of Notion in Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. whose locations are referenced inside Notion. How do you handle those in your setup?

The death certificates that have been scanned and digitized in PA are amazing. To know how someone died is interesting at best and shockingly sad at worst. Still, this kind of information is important to know. And YES to paper!!!

I am watching you using Notion for Genealogy. I am attempting to use Notion for my genealogy also. I hate having all of my information on many different platforms. I also like the fact you can put information in so many different ways. I start by setting up a main page for my research subject with my research question on the top. I link the wife and other members of the family to their own pages with all of their information. I love the idea of also making locations database, people database and educational tracking database. I will have to be watching some Notion training videos to better utilize this program. I can't wait to start changing up my notion database to be a better research tracking tool and maybe breaking some of my brick walls.

There are so many things you can do with Notion! I absolutely love it. Still trying to find time to work on my Genealogy Hub...I've worked on one project and made some adjustments, but I still need to run a bunch of projects through it to finish tweaking it. I love my Education Hub and use it all the time. It is so easy to find things. Red Gregory (www.youtube.com/@RedGregory) also uses Notion for genealogy and does tutorials (also for non-genealogy stuff). I also learned a lot from Thomas Frank (www.youtube.com/@Thomasfrank AND www.youtube.com/@ThomasFrankExplains)--I purchased his content and task management templates (gumroad.com/a/855392179 affiliate link), which made my life so much easier. I use Notion every day for just about everything. I hope these additional resources help with using Notion.

Last time I checked, children generally have two parents at least biologically. How do we draw chart that represents the familial relationships rather than just a single patriarchal or matriarchal line.

Hi, Julie. I was surprised to find that you have no comments after posting your video 2 months ago. Perhaps other people had the same difficulty following it. In the interest of helping, I offer the following describing my experience. As an Evernote user of 10 years, I wanted to see how Notion works to determine if if there was some feature I may want to apply to how I use Evernote. Candidly, I found it hard to follow your video. In general, I couldn't grasp the basis for the structure of your information. To some degree, I think we have a difference in terminology. What you call "databases", I and (I think) most other people and systems I am familiar with call them "folders" or "notebooks". - - - When looking at your "Through the Golden Door" screen, you called the items "databases". They look like "data elements" to me. - - - Also, you referred to some of the "databases" as "relational databases". I would be very surprised to find that Notion supported "relational databases", but if it does, I'd probably would be interested in investigating it some more. I probably could have followed it more if I had already watched a tutorial video on the basics of Notion. That's what I'll try now.

Hi Jim, sorry you didn’t find this video helpful. It was more of a behind-the-scenes rather than a tutorial, and more of a lesson in getting genealogists the catalog educational materials…I coose to do that with Notion, but prior to that, I used OneNote. It is a somewhat complicated tool, but when you use it to basically build your own system, the power is in using relational databases because you can do so much with them. Again, this wasn’t a tutorial, and the purpose wasn’t to highlight Notion, so my apologies that it wasn’t what you were looking for. I’d recommend Thomas Frank and Red Gregory, both on KZbin, for better explanations , demos, tutorials, etc. on Notion. All the best, Julie.

Thank you! I assumed Notion was just another “to-do” / project management type of app so I never looked that closely at it, but your video has shown me it can do so much more.
