This is why the retro computer market is so nuts these days, pretty rare CPU that would sell for decent money being harvested for $2 of gold

Great point. To reinforce, check prices of things on eBay or other platforms using model numbers and barcodes. Scrap is the lowest value you will ever receive for something. “Always, know your crap before you scrap.” Maybe that should be a tshirt?

If the thing works, you can sell it for far more than you’ll ever make trying to get gold from it

Yes there is gold. But its a tiny amount. The work of recovering costs more then the gold.

I think at that point, its more valuable as a tv repair part than just the thin strip of gold.

There's 10 dollars worth of work in reclaiming the gold from 1lb of scrap. There's also less than a dollar's worth of gold in 1lb of scrap.

Yes, but to be fair; there are so many steps in between actually accumulating all of the gold in them. There's a company that specializes in the procedure and makes a lot of cash from the gold

You missed the silver contact, like in TV remote controls, of the push buttons being masked by the flat panel back you didn't want to get into. However, you need 1000s of those push button contacts for inputs to the chips informing the chip what buttons you push (same technology as TV remotes). The metal silver is usually used instead of copper to electronically signal a pushed connection to ground in those push button designs. Many scrappers don't save 1000s of them because of the costs, room and resources needed to get that silver ... So you were in a way okay to not worry about it.

@@scrappingforvacations I forgot i had 3 in my garage. I took one apart and its 13.22pounds. And rough estimate from the pictures i calculate at least 280 cylinders. Mostly the big size ones like i got.

Katie, for me that’s always a hard balance. And a really hard one right now. Generally, I pick things up as I see them vs going out to specifically look. But I’m a small-time/part time scrapper and reseller. I think the full-time folks that diversify and maximize their trips (such as Taco Stacks) still make it worth it. Not every time but overall.
