Wouldn t be a KH 120 || that have dsp better choice instead of having all these speakers ?
@PaulThird12 сағат бұрын
And what is the rationale behind that? Kali's, Edifier & iloud MTM precision all have dsp
@anatol120412 сағат бұрын
@PaulThird yes but with this amount of money you start reaching the cost of a serious 3 way monitor with or without DSP for example 👀 and I think KH would be more flat in general than the other options or not?
@PaulThird11 сағат бұрын
Nah, it's just one perspective of the mix. Ed had the KH120 for years and we both didn't like them. Didn't work in his room and his translation wasn't great. Neumann sound like a better version of the kali's. Flat, neutral, boring but with lower distortion, tighter low end and better transient response/phase coherence. If you mix on only KH120 it'll only give you the mix perspective of the KH120 Plus the whole "3 way is always better for mixing" is a myth when you consider how popular amphion are in the audio world And plus, I didn't pay for any of those speakers (bar the kali's in the atmos room) so it's not like I chose specifically to invest in that setup. I just took the best that I could get from the youtube gig

I loved this reality check: nobody’s right and nobody’s necessarily wrong, but there’s a lot of lazy half-qualified opinions out there masquerading as gospel as to what exactly constitutes ‘proper’ studio gear. You can’t dodge having to do the research and the learning, putting in the time to develop bona fide mixing, listening and calibration skills that are relevant to your own studio space. You can spend all the money you like and argue until you’re blue in the face, but you’re wasting your cash and your time if you’re not prepared to get stuck in and get to the bottom of really knowing your room’s characteristics and instead just assume that throwing enough cash into the fire will magically earn you great sound.

Just a complete waste of my time. It's still a 20 odd year old algorithm of a tape plugin at the end of the day. When used as intended, nothing but a bit of soft clipping. Very subtle affect unless needlessly abused
@jesperborgstrm3385Күн бұрын
Audio tool shed found the difference to be quite substantial between this one and the original code in the spl. Only 1 single third order harmonic is created. Hence I am trying to recreate in hornet harmonics (it’s free btw) but someone said the code was close to magneto which I have so I dropped it again 😂 anyways - I can see why it would be interesting to control how many third order harmonics are created. 😅

Paul, this is just a very subjective impression talk, right? I'm lacking quite a bit arguments and throughout thinking. For instance: how does Sonarworks compare to ARC Studio, when you put its mix dial to let's say 50%? Because these seems about what ARC Studio actually does. The latter is just doing a little less correction and thereby keeping the character of the speakers a bit more. You can easily do that with Sonarworks as well. And then you say: you like that ARC Studio is NOT changing the phase characteristics. But isn't that what Sonarworks Linear Phase is doing as well? So, having that in mind, it seems like the amount of correction is the ONLY decisive difference. Or is there something else that I am missing? And is the "setting back" of the speakers in Sonarworks not just the volume difference that is being introduced for clipping reasons?
@PaulThird2 күн бұрын
Watch it again and listen carefully. ARC 4 Is altering the phase but not as aggressive as sonarworks due to its mirror correction. 50% mix will half the amount of reccomended correction. So if it needs 4db boost at 100hz, 50% will give it 2db. So it's not actually correcting accurately at that point. The phase distortions caused by all the narrow notches will still be there, just halfed in amount of amplitude. So less phase distortion but still more phase distortion than arc 4. ARC corrects in a broader fashion and looks for maintaining/enhancing the phase coherence where sonarworks doesn't. If you want all of the research and more detail sign up to my patreon and check the post I made. It's all there but I made this video with a more general approach but what I'm saying isnt subjective. It's science

I want my music to sound good in a club so I mix on PA speakers in my studio 😎
@nevermind43283 күн бұрын
I sort of agree with you. I don't work as an engineer but I did study music production and recording. For what I do, I don't even consider "studio" monitors anymore. I didn't work too much with expensive ones or in treated rooms except for the studios I used when I was studying, but since where I live the pricings of even cheap "studio" monitors are quite high one or two of my teachers said the following, regarding this issue: ALWAYS have a reference mix, meaning that if you are, for example, recording and mixing metal, compare your mix to a finished one from Metallica, for example, on whatever monitors you are using. I find this coherent, specially if your monitors, whatever they are, and your room, whichever treatment it has or doesn't, are also where you listen to music. You know the response of those monitors in that room. You probably also know how your headphones of choice for listening to music sound and with these elements you can make a decent mix. I'm not gonna say "up to the standard" because of what you already said: What is the standard? What was the standard when Dr. Dre made his own monitoring system for what he needed to hear in his mixes? You work with what you have and, while I was one of those guys who NEEDED flat response once, now I just think that if whatever you compose, arrange, record, mix or master gets to the people who are listening to it, that's a job well done. They don't care about response curves or how did you do it, they are listening to music. And they're gonna oversaturate the low end and high end anyway with their multimedia headphones, so you might as well mix on those as long as you know that you are having exaggerated parts of the frequency and are able to compensate for it, which gets me back to the reference mix... How does Metallica sound on this cheap multimedia headphones? Can I make my mix sound the same? Of course I have different speakers and headphones to try things on and my monitors are Edifier I believe 1000R or maybe 1500R, I don't know anymore since I bought them like 16 years ago and right now it's hard to reach the back of them to see the exact model, but nothing fancy, nor flat response either; they do have a treble knob and a bass knob so I can clean them up or mess them up a bit if I need to listen to a different range... But ultimately I stick to what I said.
@PaulThird3 күн бұрын
The problem arises when you don't understand what your speaker is NOT telling you. You cant mix what you can't hear. The whole "learn a reference on the speaker and you'll be golden" idea lacks a lot of context. You must learn the limitations of your monitorings translation, then you know what to trust and then what to look for in other monitoring. Or alternatively you invest in more expensive monitoring that "tells you more of the truth" Try mixing the same multitrack to sound exact as you can to the final master on 3 different sets of monitoring, then you'll learn just how different speakers sound and how differing their translation is

You don't need 6 or 7 figure $ worth of equipment to make decent music or mixes. Lot's of talented producers who also are mixing have been using yamaha's hs8 and krk rokits or adams. Those are great quality speakers for the price. The only difference is price and max output gain. This type of opinion is like saying that you need a porsche to prove you are a good driver. In reality it doesn't matter what gear you have but what you can do with it.
@PaulThird3 күн бұрын
Show me a list of successful modern industry mixers, not producers, that are using HS8 and KRK rokits. Making music is one thing, mixing and mastering music professionally is another. None of my industry mentors would even consider HS8, Rokit or Adam TV range. More expensive KRK V series yes, 3 way Adams yes. Yamaha... Some have NS10's laying around, no HS. Why? because due to price there are limitations in the quality that the speaker can produce. Thats not to say you can't use them as a 2nd or 3rd reference, some do, but for solely mixing and mastering, you need to learn the limitations of cheaper monitoring to understand what they AREN'T telling you. Then you understand why there is a big price gap in speakers. Listen to kali LP8 side by side to iLoud MTM precision and you'll hear the limitation of a £350 pair of speakers compared to £1600 pair speakers. Kali's are still a good pair of usable neutral sounding speakers but the MTM precision are a night and day step above on so many factors. Its completely naive to believe that very limited speakers can tell you everything you need for critical mixing and mastering

@@PaulThird You want examples? Here you go: 1.Tame Impala - Kevin for years is producing music in his house with no acoustic treatment at all, only some analog guitar pedals and other effects. No "PRO" monitoring. He is very creative and skilled musician. Millions of streams and fans around the world. 2. Virtual Riot - Electronic music producer with mastering degree who has wide catalog of his own, high quality and creative productions. Guy has lots of knowledge as well as mixing skills. He once published video on how he produced and mixed entire tracks on MacBook Pro speakers, hats off. 3. No Mana - great electro house music producer who once asked about what mid size processing and other fancy techniqueshe did in his music, he didn't even know what it is, even though his music sounds brilliant. Lots of released music signed to mau5trap, monstercat. As far as I know he is also producing in his house and definitely not using fancy 10$k monitoring system. There are more examples, thousands of talented producers AND mixers who achieved big success in the industry with stable, loyal fanbase. Have you achieved something more besides these expensive speakers? No offense but the simple fact you have more expensive speakers or gear in general doesn't prove you are better or more qualified to create great music. I've seen dozens of specialists on KZbin and forums who show their "knowledge and trick" on how to mix, master and make music but they literally have no idea what they are talking about. The thing with Yamaha's, KRK, ADAMs etc is they are great value for $. Yes they often cannot go as low as 30 or 40 hz but that is not the issue since playing those in the club would be problematic, so it is often rolled off with HP filter at mastering stage. Though you cannot even hear it, you would need to have some kind of bagpack that could reproduce such low frequencies. Even Deadmau5 who has a few million dollar worth of studio mentioned he heard great music from guys who produced great music on a laptop and cheap gear. Also he heard lots of bad music who has been produced and mixed by so called professionals in expensive studios and it sounded like crap. I would understand your critics on listening to music or trying to mix and master it on consumer type of speakers like bluetooth speaker, headphones like beats from apple.
@TheRealNewBlackMusic3 күн бұрын
I have Said this once and I will say it a million times the only way to know if your mixes and your music is right is that you have to have a review of your tracks by other artist musicians and engineers who know what they are doing. You have to have more ears on the track than just yours, after you do this enough times you will know what you are doing right and wrong no matter what gear you are using. the biggest lie in audio engineering is not studio monitors it is plugins and their so called modeling. Thanks for the great video really enjoyed it.

Hi Paul, what do you think about MQA format in a DAC/Amp? Is it something you should look for to get the best sound experience ?
@perberglund-bass68196 күн бұрын
When I listen to loudspeakers/headphones with ”flat” frequency response I usually find them boring. That makes me prefer loudspeakers/headphones I really like listening to, despite the fact that they don’t have a flat response. This mean that when I mix with a flat response loudspeaker/headphone I will most probably tweak the sound to be similar to how it sounds using my not flat loudspeakers/headphones. So, the consequense will be that the mix may get e.g. a high frequency boost, and this will not happen if I mix with my preferred not flat loudspeakers/headphones. I think the strive for flat response assume that we have absolutely no hearing loss, which is very often not the case. Therefore, loudspeakers/headphones that compensate for your hearing loss probably will be your preferred choise, and there is nothing wrong about that. I would be interested to hear your comments! 😊
@PaulThird6 күн бұрын
Flat in speakers is normally too bright for most. Me included. Even with a relatively flat speaker response I still tune them with a slight low shelf bump and a broad high shelf dip. I sometimes shelve 2-3db all the way down to 2k so I have more of a far field response.

I buy them, but I buy them even if theyre a 10 year old plugin...just the ones that have held up. fuck a bunch of hardware though. The fact that some of the greatest mixing engineers are strictly in the box now kind of helps me out in that decision. You can be selective and get new plugins for inspiration for fun or trying out, but use the ones you know well, and not over doing it..

This is a nice hardware, but the execution is not that good, not only they are far from the Harman curve, but it has some nasty problems in the high frequencies. With the EQ they are good, but again measuring and correcting headphones is extremely difficult.
@PaulThird7 күн бұрын
It's an easy EQ fix for harman. Plus the "problems" in the high frequencies are more of a visual thing, not an issue from an audible point. If you are referring to the audio science review measurements, bare in mind that Amir admitted that he couldn't get a good fit to the dummy head. Take his measurements with egg shaped cups with a big grain of salt. Plus any distortion above 1k at 94db SPL is absolutely irrelevant. Nobody will be able to tolerate any music where 1k and above is at 94db. Low end would be like 115-120db. A realistic test would be 1k and above measured much much lower in dB SPL Ananda nano is very accurate in the top end at normal listening levels

@@PaulThird Thanks Paul. Yes I read the ASR review, however I tested them together with the R70X, although AT was still warmer at around 200hz the complete frequency response was closer to what I would call "flat". Sure there is much more low frequency distortion on R70X and the hardware on paper is not as good, but overall not a big difference, especially if used with the EQ, which is a must for every serious work.

Hardware and its status is so overrated. I have had a good insight into the production, studios, and A&R world since the early 90s. You would be amazed how many awesome successful hits were made and released using absolute crap hardware. You would also be amazed how often A&R people are not capable of distinguishing between different sonic qualities. A good track is about a lot more than its execution. At the end of the day, hardware, mixing, mastering, and overall production quality will not dictate what a listener likes. Sadly enough, we are being brainwashed to believe a number of hypes... Look at the Loudness Wars, manipulated playlists, and social media channels with an agenda... And then we haven't even started about how a social media following has an influence on how an artist and his music is received. With every piece of music, I have ever liked, I never thought about how and with what it was made. I either like it or I do not. And that goes for the majority of listeners and music lovers. Best advice for producers, publishers, and anything in between... If it works, it works, no matter how it was created. Doing the best you can is often enough.

One of the early fifties rock stars, unfortunately I've forgotten which, used to mix his record and then use a small AM transmitter to broadcast it to his car radio outside the studio too listen to it 'as his audience would hear it'... Whoever mixed your absolutely favourite track was the last person to hear it as it was intended to be heared, even if you own the same 50K speakers and amplifier and have borrowed the master tape and player, unless you are listening in the booth it was mixed in, the room you are now in will add it's own flavour to the soundscape. The point of good music is it should 'transcend' the playback method and inspire listeners everywhere.
