buymeacoffee.com/paulthird (if you got any benefit from my video, helps a lot to keep the channel away from paid content) *IMPORTANT THINGS I LEFT OUT DUE TO VIDEO BEING SO LONG* 1. All speakers were placed where they measured and sounded best whether it be on desk or on gator speaker stands. 2. All had iso acoustic pucks underneath when mixing 3. My room is well treated with a decay time of sub 200ms across the frequency spectrum. Desk is placed in the optimal position for the room. 4. Focal shape 65 will have their own video due to being over £1000 a pair 5. All speakers were connected XLR through my Topping Dx7 pro+ which is one of the best measuring DAC's on the market 5. I was not paid by anybody to make the video. Kali, Presonus & edifier allowed me to keep the speakers but I have to send the focals back to distributor 6. Maybe I would feel that the mids were less focused in IN8 due to the low end extension of the 8 inch woofer but I would still experience that lack of forwardness and lack of transient detail. I think I would prefer IN8 in my control room but nothing can beat that ws6.2 sub at that price range. It's a beast!
@noahb63325 ай бұрын
I have them too and they definitely are just a bit recessed in the mid range. However with ARC room correction and a sub, they really come to life and are extremely detailed and flat. Remind me a lot of Genelec

yeah I love them as well. but definitely want to get a sub as well, to get another 10Hz lower... I think they are easy to work with, they're probably not the best for the "couch position" so if you also want to impress your clients, you need to pull them close to the sweet spot.

The control room has a bit of a low mid build up so I ended up going for dynamic mode as it measured better in the room. Used arc 4 to get a calibration eq, set to control room contour and further dialed back some 8k to control a lot of the bite from the planar magnetic tweeters as these speakers can be on the bright side

Very helpful content as always, sir😊 One of pair of speakers I was considering a while ago are the Tannoy Gold 8s... Don't know if you've ever heard them or tried them... Those Kali Audio UNF speakers are definitely on mind as soon as I can get them in my country... Until, the best option here are the Yamaha HS8s (which I absolutely love and can trust) but the price is crazy right now over here (exchange rate is kinda wild over here in Nigeria), I e used them for years at places I've worked. I just want a good set at home now. I can get a good (ok at worst) mix on any speaker I listen to long enough (usually 3hrs with my library of songs) but a good pair pf monitors are just a time-saver
@johnthorpedidge5 ай бұрын
It's nice when you can feel happy with what speakers you have considering you spend a lot of time with them! Hifi speakers vary enormously just like monitor speakers. High quality monitor speakers would be high fidelity. You wouldn't want poor fidelity speakers for monitoring. A lot of mastering engineers use hifi speakers too. If we get away from any marketing or marketing terms, a loudspeaker is just a loudspeaker, be they more 'transparent' or not. And none are flat. Also how transparent is 'your' room? What a massive difference that can make regardless of 'room' EQ. And that's another problem for people choosing speakers as some will just work better in certain rooms than others So trial and error, experimentation, a great way to go. My speaker positioning in both rooms I use would be considered acoustically incorrect placement, yet they sound their best where they are just like yours! Rules are useful but you also have to know when to break them!

Cool review, I have in-8mk2 and their bass alone isn't enough imo for the same reasons you mentioned, I did have it with their WS-12 although it was literally dying as I bought it 2nd hand, It is one of the reasons they have a mk2 out now (I don't want to besmirch their name but it was a defect that I Get it, no company wants to replace something like that although I think they should have). Regardless I don't know if it was the sub outputting too much or not enough with their "in-8" crossover settings.... I did buy their WS 6 and it's been pretty amazing so far.

Focal really is interesting, isn't it? Lot of clarity, precision, detail and stage, yet simply different. Same story with their (older) Headphones. ARC 4 does work - best in its weightclass (price) imo. In terms of the speakers I was missing the iLoud MTMs - they are in the same weightclass and depending on your needs they can absolutely do the job (translate very well too). Big upside for the little homestudio is that they come with the correction integrated, which means you listen to all music through the correction on your home-desk (without loopbacks, arc studio or more expensive hardware corrections). Big upside for people with not a lot of space is that they are small. Big upside for people on the road is that they are rather portable in comparison. Huge upside for atmos is that they are easier to set up. Downsides are its limitations that come with the size. Still, would have been interesting to know how the mixes you would have done on them would have hold up.

Great video! I haven't heard all of the monitors in this list but have heard most (owned the LP6 & currently own IN-8 - both v1's before the updated drivers and amps with lower self noise), and I agree. Kali as a brand right now for cheap monitors are just hard to beat. Still need to add the new small sub now its out as I didn't have space for the older big sub they had out at the time I brought them. And I work mainly on Hip Hop, Dub, etc, so I need a speaker that forces me to push transients for things like drums more (I need things hitting hard lol). I actually mastered side A of a vinyl release on LP6's when I had just got them. A litle off in the upper mids and lower mids when listening now on my current setup, but the client still to this day loves how it came out. So thats the main win! And I was still learning the drastic change in sound from my old passive Alesis monitors from 19 years ago - I'm getting old haha. I actually wonder how that master would sound on the LP8's, for some reason I feel like it would sound like its supposed to due to it being done on the smaller version of that speaker. Who knows. I also want to try the edifiers at some point as planar tweeters sounds like something that used to only exisit in my dreams. Dope vid man! Glad to see you have somewhat setlled on the edifiers for stereo. Who cares if they are Hifi speakers, do I dare mention the origin of the original white cones? haha.

All were pre broke in bar focals which were blasted with pink noise for 8 hours before playing any sort of music through them. They both had at least 10-14 hours break in before any mixing was done on them. That's all they need. Anybody claiming their speakers changed after like 3 months of use is purely placebo. All break in is doing is essentially removing that very early stiffness from the cones and drivers not being used. 10-14 hours of proper break in is more than enough
