One of the very special human aspects of this class is the wonderful fact that so many, if not most of these boats, are built by people with no previous boat building experience who then went on to sail a formidable adventure, all alone, in their home built nutshell! All that trapped potential, finally released by a crazy little idea to create a new and affordable class. Well done Don. Well done everyone. I am very inspired by you all.

One thing that have strucked me is the angle of the bulkhead the hatch is mounted. IMO it should be 90 degrees angle to keep rain and water on the outside. But maybe there is a reason I miss here 🙂

How fast is a 5.80 compared to a Mini 6.50?

Why not just raise the cockpit floor instead of installing flaps? It would drain easier as well.

I was lucky and spent time with Tom when I was a kid. I told him about a single hander that was a couple of weeks behind us who had rabbit as pet on his H28. I caught up with the single hander in Fiji. He was dark as Kamahl as Tom had talked him into leaving the rabbit with him. We suspected Tom had fresh rabbit stew as soon as that H28 went over the horizon. Surcharge to visit Tom was a bottle of Rum.

Dear Don, today I discovered this (small) great project. I will spend the whole weekend on board my old 32 ft reading all the documentation on the website. I don't know how, I don't know when, but I'm sure that sooner or later we will meet. For any need in Italy you can count on me

Today I watched this video and I discovered the 580 project that I didn't know about. This evening I will confess to my wife that I have lost my mind and I will calmly explain to her what my near future will be like. Let's hope she doesn't shoot me

Dumb question: Do they build these boats from scratch, or does a manufacturer make them?
@Foxtrottangoabc

They seem to build them from scratch , quite impressive . Though im sure ine could always pay to get someone else to do it like a boatyard or carpenter

Will these boats ever plane? I know its designed as a displacement vessel, but it sure would be cool if it could plane in something like 30 knots.

Congratulations Don & Jane, what a great buy, friend had a Jeaneau 43 with very similar layout , new 96 and cruised 7-8 years with young 4 boys . There rudder was out in Caribbean for warranty repair and boat floated happily for a few weeks! Have a wonderful time getting back to what you love! Feel free to post occasionally what you up to!!! Cheers Warren (usa)

Why didn't you put a Windpilot Pacific Light on the back? Same weight, I doubt it would have some of the issues of the South Atlantic
@mcintyreadventure
@mcintyreadventure 2 ай бұрын
50% of the price :)..the Wind pilot is ok...but SA also comes with a custom 580 mount and it is improving all the time...the servo pendulum principle is simple.....engineering is solid and reliable and the main thing is bearings and linkages...the rest is anyone can do it....so SA is ok and when making my initial decision cost was relevant and it was a quite different...also most vanes around are different interpretations of the same concepts principle or copy...that is life :)

All I can say is wow. I thought it was built by a yard, until you said you did it. Love the varnished sections it makes it warm, great cushions, it’s just perfect. Now I’m going to copy you but leave the yellow/orange out.

Is that the heaviest of the boats, it looks like it's got some stuff that really isn't needed in my opinion, plumbed in head, fancy looking timber edging/mouldings etc. Is that why it's refered to as the Rolls Royce of the fleet, because a Rolls weighs twice as much and more than most cars?

I am building a Setka A, the inspiration for the 580, i have the plans of the 580, but the setka rules suit me better, I have added under deck handrails and will use a movable galley box, like on malizia, the jetboil so high is a hazard IMHO, a simple design ala wharram "flexispace" I also built and owned and sailed a wharram and flexispace works better for me and no dedicated galley and no chart table is better IMHO see my blog for more it is the same as my user name

Not convinced on the southwind auto tiller. Everyone seems to have problems or hints at potential problems. I think another option is needed.
