I watched the whole vid but never heard you explain the actual technique to remove the micro burr. Could you elaborate or point me to a video where it get's explained? Also I think the focus should be on edge retention testing, not on sharpness testing. A micro buss can get shaving sharp so you will still end up with Bess scores below 100. That means you can't make a distinction just by measuring sharpness. But a micro burr tends to fold over quick, hence giving you bad edge retention. So with edge retention testing, you could actually differentiate between a fully deburred knife or one with a remaining micro burr just by seeing how well the edge holds up.

I enjoy your videos and am subscribed to your channel. FYI there is a difference between a keyway and a roll pin. A keyway is a square grove broached or machined on the wheel and shaft with a square piece of key stock locking the two together. A roll pin is a round spiral pin that goes into a round hole.
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER19 күн бұрын
@@youngsapling1 they have a keyway on the axle. The hole to receive the brass pin is on the wheel close to the center 1/2 hole. It’s only needed when reversing, if even then. The center screw will hold on its own I think sense the reverse button is soft stop/start.

I started with the original WEN wheel and found it to be really inconsistent with course parts in the wheel and smooth parts of the wheel. Some parts were "harder" and other parts were soft and shed out faster. Overall, it worked, but I felt that there had to be better stones out there. I moved to the Jet wheel, and thought that was an improvement for sure. It shed nicely, so I wasn't getting that burnishing with metal stuck in the wheel as much. I did notice that my first Jet wheel was super soft on one side and hard on the other so it went out of round quite quickly. The soft side was always course and the hard side was smooth and it made it hard to get a consistent grind on the blade. I bought a second one, and it was REALLY SOFT. I put that away and just called it a loss, and chalked it up to manufacturing inconsistency. My THIRD Jet wheel was really nice and consistent. I could control the grit and grind very well. After truing the wheel a couple times, I'm now into a section of the stone that is SUPER soft. It's usable, but I have to smooth it over a lot or it's too course for the work I do. And you are right about there being little "rocks" in parts of it that you can feel. Not great for a last pass on a knife as it puts large grooves into your fine edge. I've been wanting a stone that is really consistent all the way through in hardness and grit. I just got my first Tormek wheel and I'm excited to get it on. I'm really grateful for your extensive comparison on the wheels; doing your work over months and noting the characteristics of the wheels thouroughly and not just "unboxing". I do a few hundred knives a month at work, and when you're struggling with the stone, you really feel that impact your efficiency. I'll gladly pay the extra money to have less frustration. Anyways... Thanks for the great video.

Still a great video with some great tips. I'm flat out getting 400 knives per wheel. If my maths is correct (53,000/17) you're getting about 3,352 knives per wheel! That's extraordinary! Must be your edge trailing method. I'm guessing you probably also grind at one grit without changing the grit much. I change the grit from rough to smooth(er) on almost every knife but I had no idea it was costing me $45,000 in lost income per wheel. I'm in shock. Unless I've missed something. Hey Pete, I've had the the wheel come a little loose one time, you mention this in the video - with the old locking "knobs" I think the pin must not have been properly set in the open slot I'm not sure, just happy I noticed before it came all the way loose. Anyway you said you had a fix for it would you elaborate on that? Nice to see you going good, I spoke to some people though they said the new Apex wouldn't be in the store before 2025? I can see they have the ones with the new axle now but is that also with the new AC brushless motor?
@CrimeVid2 ай бұрын
Slide your fingers on a newly sharpened knife ? Yes you can but never along it, across it is correct, you can easily feel a burr. You are just feeling with the ridges in your fingerprint, and by how easily the edge catches the ridges. Somehow the sharper the knife the crisper the edge feels.

I mentioned your post to them and referenced it as how I wanted mine to be set up. If you need details about the order I can provide them. FYI my right hand BOW came damaged my left hand shaft came milled to shallow and I wasn't able to tighten the insert until I ground about an eighth of an inch off of the set screw and the small wheel on the left BOW was so wobbly I ended up replacing it as well. All the problems are now fixed and it works great. If it doesn't work out for you to send me a laser can you give me the Amazon reference?
