Great Video! Thank you for showing it under a real life situation with a stone that much out of round. My stone was indeed out of round just like yours was. When I tried using the truing/dressing tool because I wasn't steadying the universal support, shown in your video, I was getting so much chatter that I almost ruined the stone. When you watch the Tormek truing videos done in their studio, they show you under ideal conditions which we all now do exist.

The best tool to use for dressing is a 4and 1/2 " side grinder with a masonary grinding disc. Run the sharpener dry and dress the stone with the edge of the disc; very fast and easy.

I use something like that for the 3200 rpm bench grinder wheels. But wet grinders are 110rpm. Slow enough the angle grinders can't clip off the high side. so the rigidly mounted trueing jig is the tool. Thanks for your thoughts just the same.

Have you come across any other good methods of trueing a stone without using the Tormek truing thing? Are there other options or diy methods that will get it most of the way true but maybe not as perfect as the tormek device?
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER 4 жыл бұрын
No I haven’t. The trueing tool takes a beating and I’d pony up for this tool. That said for under $10 bucks you can try to use hf diamond (cbn) plates time flatten the surface but this will not help the out of round problems the stone will get. So just buy the right tool. It does last. I’ve never had a problem with mine.

I’ve been trying to hold a rusty file against the side of this antique pedal powered grindstone. But it’s going incredibly slowly. I wonder how they did this back in the day. In the middle ages or just even early modern era.
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER

I suspect the first priority is to not let it get out of round. For you I’d use some kind of jig that lets you use an angle grinder with diamond wheel. This process is what I use on my felt wheel and hard convolute wheel. But I just use a reg cutoff wheel.

Hello I’m completely blind and use this Tormek and so far found your video of it to be the best. the companies videos don’t describe as well as you do but I have one question when you’re using the stone to change the grit of the wheel how and when do you know which grit to use do you change it for certain tools or what? I really can’t find any information on this hope you can help thanks
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER 3 жыл бұрын
Ok I’ll answer your question but you have to answer one question for me. To achieve the grit you want is a guessing game. Tormek says the fine side is 1000 and course side 250g These grits are only an estimate. The time on each stone is said to be 1 minute. But tormek would like you to think it’s all very exact but really it’s not, and it doesn’t really matter. Your edge will not be any less if it’s off 200 grit. My question for you- How the hell are you doing any of this completely blind. I’m impressed!
@MrVinny3006
@MrVinny3006 3 жыл бұрын
@@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER i’m sorry if this comes across as stupid but that still really doesn’t answer my question so should I have my wheel permanently at 250 or 1000? Or should I change at some stage?. For example what grit do you use for spindle gouges and roughing gouges? As far the blind thing. I really don’t know how I do it I’m only turning 18 months so far. I’ve been taught the basics from an elderly gentleman. A lot of what I do myself at home is only done by thought and touch. I suppose it helps that I came from a technical background before I lost my site I was a Autobody mechanic I think people call it in America. Fixing crashed cars. If you want to have a look at some of my work that I made over the last 18 months you can find it on Facebook at. Blind craft wood turning A little bit of feedback would be great of some people thanks for your time and this great video
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrVinny3006 I did miss understand your question. I don’t turn wood but I do carve. Carving requires a very fine edge. But I think I’ve heard turning requires a burr left. If this is true then the 250 grit should be better. Also that is far easier. But you need to ask your mentor about what turning tools require. By the way you can make the stone even courser buy using it after trueing it. Just keep tools moving cuz the grooves will create jetways if you hold still. I use this method when something has heavy damage.

How round is the hole in the middle of your stone? I have heard that people have had their stone go out of round simply because the hole in the middle was filled with plaster and slowly went oblong
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER 4 жыл бұрын
Definitely not. The hole is the exact size of the axle but when they pack the stone material in the mold the guy who packs the south side doesn't pack it as well. I had to stop using the Black Stone cuz it got so bad. Tormek said it was operator error, not the product. The distrubritor who was going to bat for me said that's what they always say when there is a product problem!

I'm getting back onto guitar work here for myself, and got a number of abused chisels off of Ebay to get honed up, and I figure Its time to sharpen up my pocket knife too. I appreciated your vid. here. Next question for you: They have super cheap double sided wet/dry grinders that spin the 130RPM like a T4. On the opposing side is a full speed grinder. Do you guess I could use one of the fine/course grit blocks to dress one of these and get similar results? They are seriously only $40 grinders. Have you used this jig on your Wen sharpener? There are mixed answers on whether or not it will work for the whole width of that wheel. Thanks!
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER 2 жыл бұрын
Ok here is the deal with Wen and Tormek jigs. Wen expect Tormek jigs to be used. That is why they don’t make them. The problem is wens tool rest has different portions. The bar stock is the same but the two mounting legs are in different spots in relation to the wheels. So you can’t press the trueing tool up to the nearest leg to the stone. If you do push it as in Tormek’s design you can’t quite true the whole stone. So the fix is to position the tool so it can scrape the entire stone and tighten the locking knob tight. This will hold just fine. But will be about 3/4” away from near leg.

@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER 4 жыл бұрын
Tormek and probably other stones go out of round if you are not trueing them regularly. If I get a chisel or planet blade I have to true it. Otherwise I go till it’s a bouncy problem. I stopped using black stones because of how bad they became. I sent a video to Tormek and described how they were suddenly far worse than my first 3 black stones. They reply with. “ if there’s a problem it’s operator error.” ( or something very close to that) Don’t get me wrong, their product is the best available but not perfect. And their wanting to better their product seems more like blame the user. I haven’t used the wens stone yet. I’ll report on it once I have an opinion.
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER 3 жыл бұрын
@ShRed Vines my opinions don’t factor in pride of ownership. Tormek wins in that catagory. If you have the money go with it. Tormek makes the biggest selection of jigs. Wen says to buy tormek jigs. But if you’re not getting a wet grinder because you can’t afford or justify the cost of the tormek at least there is another option.

No downside. I sharpen so many knives in a week or two the small radius is gone. I have seen some guys have a huge radius 1/4”-3/8”and those can mess up some pocket knives and kitchen knives with finger guards as well as cheap plastic handled knives where the handle blocks the knife edge. @FREEHAND.WETGRINDER
@FREEHAND.WETGRINDER Жыл бұрын
The amount of out of round doesn't mess up the edge anymore than most whetstone sharpeners having a slightly inconstant stroke but you can still get a very sharp edge. I am told I deliver the sharpest most consistent edge compared to other farmers market sharpeners. That is what I am told by my customers. But I know of other sharpeners who are better. All around better But they don't work at Farmers Markets with a 1.5 minute per knife schedule. Nor charge a buck an inch. Now I even have a few chefs drive 30-40 minuets instead of the other sharpeners in their own city. P.S. After you have sharpened 60,000+ knives you can get good if not great results with just about anything. Watch my other videos, take from them what applies to your style, forget the rest. Good luck
