I thought activated carbon was just to keep your soil from getting gross while the clan up crew establish and build up their colonies? Why would you need to add it if you have well established CUC and do partial substrate changes?

I just got my first Chahoua at an auction and this was very helpful! I'd planned on housing and feeding them just like my gargs, so it's good to know ahead of time that they'll need more insects. Thank you!

This is going to be a long-ish comment. Sorry. I purchased a 36x22x17 habitat in late December 2022. From Jan-Mar, as time allowed, I assembled and customized it. I added hardscape and secured it by drilling into the ends of the wood and then screwing it to walls. I also added 2" of clay ball drainage layer and about 4-6" of upper substrate (sloped up front to back) and added a lot of live plants, isos, springtails, etc. In April of '23 I got my baby Keel Bellied Lizard. So with hardwood, cork bark, lave plants, substrate, clay ball lower layer, this thing was no longer "light"! Recently I sold the enclosure (only due to moving and no space in destination. Fully satisfied with the enclosure) and honestly I was concerned that when the unit was picked up, all that weight on that bottom snap-in panel would just rip it out. Anecdotally I would say the enclosure weighed 70-80 pounds and the bulk of that was clay, substrate and moisture. All pushing on that bottom panel. Well, it was picked up and moved about 25yds to the buyer's vehicle and not a peep. It did "bulge" or "sag" a little towards the middle of the bottom panel. but not a single thing came loose. Very impressed with direct pressure weight handling. On a related note, I hope the company is ok. The website is up and I have purchased an accessory this year (2024) but it has been a good while since any YT content was posted and I don't see any new products/enclosures, etc. listed at the site since 2022 or maybe early 2023. Either way, I can say I really enjoyed building and customizing my enclosure. I also had their mister and fogger but ultimately determined I could keep my Keel and the plants happiest by fogging only, after getting initial moisture levels set in the substrate. Everything worked as advertised. I know they focus on bakers rack considerations when they size their enclosures, but it would be so nice to have a 36H x 18/24D x 36W. I am thankful the Keel was mostly tail (about 10 of his 15-ish inches). Otherwise the 36x17x22 dimensions would have been too restrictive. As it was, even 36x18x36 would have been ideal. Based on the siding material, I assume it gets "interesting" when you have a single panel that is 36"x36" that a lot more area than 36"x22".

I like to lay thin, flat stones around the perimeter of my plant's roots. They need to be big enough to cover the width of the roots. Make sure your stone is safe for the frog. You don't want them absorbing random minerals. My frog doesn't try to burrow through the rocks. And, it's pretty. It adds a little something extra to the enclosure. 🙂

After 14 months with a simple potting mix substrate housing a cribo the pH was 6.2 as measured by a soil testing lab. Most of us have drinking water that is full od salts, ie minerals like calcium, potassium, etc, which replenishes the substrate and balances the pH. You really dont need to add additional substrate over time.
@jmonahan111 ай бұрын
Also, zero reason to add charcoal. There is nothing that needs to filtered out of a good substrate - like a high quality potting mix. Animal waste is quickly broken down by bacteria, not bugs, to its chemical components.
@jmonahan111 ай бұрын
No reason to use a clean up crew. They do nothing to help. And you dont have to change out your bioactive set up if you use a good potting mix substrate. O have setups that are over 3 years old and have never been changed out. There is zero reason to create layers, or imitate regional soils. Thats a complexity that serves no purpose in captivity.
@readylucas3 ай бұрын
completely false. Springtails and isopods are almost a must.. especially if you have a bigger reptile dropping turds like i do. I have drawf whites and armadillium perracae which both do a great job. Ate a whole snake shed in under a week. They also do a great job on feces.. i think you just got ahold of some stubborn bugs
@jmonahan13 ай бұрын
@@readylucas The bugs do not help. Ive done side by side experiments - one tub with a very healthy population of both isopods and springtails, one with fresh miracle-grow potting mix. After adding animals waste I watched and waited. The natural bacteria in the potting mix broke down, decomposed the waste every bit as fast as the tub with the bugs. In other words, the bugs offered zero benefit. Even the fungus was untouched in the tub with the springtails, so I busted that myth as well. The bugs can only turn big poop into smaller poop. And the vast majority of species eat decaying vegetable matter, not animal waste. But never matter, the bacteria will decompose the waste within a few days, and break it down to its chemical components that the plants can directly access. Ive been keeping hundreds of herp species over 50 years, always experimenting with different enclosure designs. So I know a think or two :-) Some herpetoculture articles I wrote on substrate, clean-up crews, cage design: herpetocultureinc.com

@readylucas29 күн бұрын
@jmonahan1 ive seen my isopods eat whole snake sheds and pieces of wood. Maybe you just have been using the wrong bugs. Ever heard of a comfirmation bias? Yes the springtails serveba purpose but they dont "offer zero benifet" u just found what works with less effort. Also springtails cant eat every kind of fungi, and they only eat the mycelium from what ive seen. Not fruiting bodies

On the down side, PETA says that small monkeys are used to pick coconuts. They're kept chained up and lead miserable lives. Just saying.

A good rule of thumb is to take everything PETA says with the largest grain of salt you can find. They are not where one should turn for reliable information when it comes to animal welfare.
