Against the advice of my seed company I jammed my peppers together and the grew bigger and produced superior fruit than ever. Can this be done with determinate tomatoes? Say a foot apart in sections of three rows with two feet between sections?

I live in Maine and winters can get very cold. My bins are 3 x 4 in piles. Do you think I could put some of my worms in my compost bins? Also do you think I could use a freezer outside for vermicomposting. We can get as cold as -20 degrees.

How do you harvest the worm castings without including the worms themselves? I have a subpod and my worm population was exploded!

With this knowledge there should be no need for anyone on the planet to go hungry! Exceptional simplified explanation of the earth, (and why we mistreat it!). I will be 80 come January, and started all these processes just a year or two ago. This is a great example of the KISS method of teaching, it stands for KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID! Well done that man!!

We have taught people doing chipping to spread out the wood chips so that they do not spontaneously combust. There must be a happy medium with this process. How do you know if it's getting too hot inside the pile?
@GrowFoodWell
@GrowFoodWell 2 ай бұрын
There is so much suspended water in the pile due to the chips being saturated. During the pile construction, each layer is soaked for about an hour before the next layer is placed on top. The finished pile has several thousand gallons of water contained in the wood, so combustion is a very low risk, even with temperatures around 130°F

What an excellent idea. I don't think we can do that for our garden unfortunately. Perhaps it would be possible if we moved to somewhere flat. What we have is a very steep treed slope at the back of the garden. You have to hold on to the trees and shrubs to climb it. Our chickens get up there, and dogs are attracted by their smell to come down the slope in the garden, and we've had several chickens killed. So we ran a 4ft livestock fence (plastic coated wire) about halfway up the slope, and tied it to the tree trunks at intervals. The ground is too hard to put stakes in or bury the base of the fence. Trouble is, small deer (and perhaps other animals - badger, fox, etc) try to push it down, or push it over or crawl/dig under it, making spaces where the chickens can get out and dogs can get in. What I'd like to use is predator red eyes instead. But it's a long way from electricity, it's a long fence which isn't straight, and there are a lot of trees and shrubs in the way of a line of sight. Maybe we could get 6-10 sets of solar battery powered red eyes, with the panels situated outside the tree line. That might work. I love looking at other people's solutions though. It triggers my creative juices!

How to make composting complicated! People the woods do not care about proportions. If it falls on the ground it rots. Just do yourself a favor and load up your space(bin etc.) with organic matter from your yard and stir it up once in a while. If it doesn't rain in a week give it a sprinkle of water. If you don't have enough "browns" recycle newspaper and cardboard (minus the tape) tear or cut in small strips or pieces and add it in. SIMPLE! Old timers did it this way for generations. 1 caveat do try and keep chems out of your mix. Happy gardening!

Just discovered your channel. I’ve been binge watching your tutorials from making my own compost to what to do with the harvest. SO enjoying it. Wish I had the space you do. I’m surprised with how lush your garden is considering where you live. My daughter lives in The Springs and she struggles with the dry desert like conditions. 😊 forwarding your channel to her. We live in Northern Illinois. I have no excuse. 😊 Would LOVE to take your classes. I’ve decided I’m cutting out lawn and planting more gardens. 😊Finding the info you’ve shared very informative! Thank you!! BTW What type of boards are you using for the raised beds?

Red Wrigglers only tend to live in the top 15 cm of a pile, if you really want the worms to consume the compost you need to add it in layers over time matching the worms consumption

I'm not a person who expects things for free, and as a self employed business man I completely understand the value of personal effort and time. That said, it's a little rude (for want of a better word) to claim something to be available for free to draw in views and orders, when it isn't. I went to the link above. There's NO free material that I can find anywhere (except for a 'May mini course' which I haven't viewed as it wasn't the purpose ), much less the promised information on worm bins and compost. I very much appreciate what you've offered here on KZbin, and fully appreciate your time. My suggestion? Delete that bit of sound from the video. It was a turn off, at the least...and for the entire time I spent looking for a link (including using the search function, which just pulled up more 'login' links) it continued. It makes what you offer to sell seem like yet another 'gotcha' gimmick like that offered by so many of the other video content creators on KZbin. You have a great channel and I firmly believe in the thinking behind the concepts you've shared. I'd like to close with a huge thanks for what you share. This video isn't meant to be an actual negative. Just a polite suggestion on something I think could be improved.
