Cats that haven't got enough underwing clearance slam weather they lashed or solid. I have a similar designed cat to a Wharram and it is solid with 3 beams that are bigger than on the Wharrams and solidly connected right into the bottom of the hull. My boat is 42 feet long with 25 feet beam but it has 1 meter of clearance and it has never slammed. I live and sail on that boat for 27years. The boat is about 36 years old and there is no stress cracking anywhere because it is very strongly build. However, the lashings on Wharrams take some of the shock out of it when say, broad reaching. My boat has a bit of a jerking motion that the Wharrams don't have, but I also have a wider beam, which adds to it. I have the benefit of a bridgedeck cabin and access into the hulls from that cabin, but it is a trade off. All the best with your project. I do like the Wharram designs, they're great boats.

Slamming , like you say is created by not enough clearance under the Bridgedeck ,Wharrams have miles of clearance.The movement , as slight as it is due to lash I go has nothing to do with slamming I believe , lashings seem like a pain , if I could glass the beams on or bolt with rubber as you have I would be happier. I was fortunate enough to meet Tom Hembroff who along with his brother lashed the first Ariki Beams together when they had to …..thanks for sharing ,interesting stuff.

If your boat is like my Tiki30 inbuild, then that is the keel backbone and outboard are just hull stringers. I know you said that they are only temporary but it makes me cringe to see them just leaned against the hull and backbone. :) Looks like a nice solar setup. You could make a few shekels by having affiliates links for that type of stuff.

I dont wish to appear negative, but why do a fair few wharrams suffer rot....and i mean a lot ? There are a few youtube videos of warrams and they all seem to start with cutting the boat to bits(lol) to get rid of rot. Is it the glass over ply design, or just neglect ? Sorry if this appears a bit negative but when i win the lottery one of my choices was a warram....not sure now though :)

Funny how that works with shallow draft even with a wide beam and docking close to shore a lot of places.
@alfreddaniels3817 Жыл бұрын
You mention decking the fore and aft deck. I did that with the Pahi. In short steep waves the half covered planked foredeck get slammed and digs in the waves. And the Pahi-designs are known to have more buoyancy in the bows than the Tiki/Tehini’s.
@HanunaWharramTehini Жыл бұрын
I’m following in line with Don Henderson’s layout where he did his back net in all deck. I won’t do the full thing, but half and half. As you might notice, I explore and examine purposefully, making maps takes, changes and do it all openly. Trying to keep it real and discussing closely with the designer as I go. All well considered up so far, but not in place yet. So, we’ll see where I end up, eh?
@alfreddaniels3817 Жыл бұрын
I don’t understand why you do this? Do you have the buildingplans ? Are you a better designer than James and Hanneke ? My experiences with Tiki 26 and Pahi 31 is that everytime I thought to do something better than the original design it turned out to have many additional problems that I had not foreseen.

great work! I love your yurt! and your workshop pretty well set up! It's so interesting to see how designs evolve. I think the lashed beams are also a great fashion statement!
@HanunaWharramTehini Жыл бұрын
Aye, the lashed beams are brilliant looking. I met a guy who’d arrived here from the Caribbean, said his lashing were quite loud. I’d not heard that before.
@alfreddaniels3817 Жыл бұрын
My experience the lashings can be loud and annoying. To tighten them is a very big job and the flexing will make retightening regularly. I solved that by mounting strong belttighteners on top of the lashings so I can put the tension up by one hand in two seconds. The kind of belt-tighteners as used on trucks and in the carworkshops. They don’t cost much and give a quick fix.
@alfreddaniels3817 Жыл бұрын
Also: the flex of the structure needs the pods and everything that is build on the structure to be able to move and twist as well. So when you wondered why the pods and the cabin were not bolted to the beams or where you wondered why the roofcabin was held with only two bolts to prevent blowing off. ........
@Radmacdaddy Жыл бұрын
Yes, that makes sense. And for the average guy out there, and in me, that’s a surprise I’d not realised, thus I’m exploring the design as I go and discovering these things 🤩 I’ll mention this point when I work on the new pods. Thanks for your comments!🙌

@@HanunaWharramTehini Say hi to Mark from Wilding sailing... hes working on a Pahi 42 in amsterdam.. Im sort of hoping he goes for a ket h rig long term but he will have to place his main mast well forward so he can build his deck pod central.
@dominictarrsailing Жыл бұрын
The beams are held up by the bolt. The rounded block just holds them at the right level to put the bolt through. Then the rubbers stacks pull down only on the edges. The pahi has a system like this, with the central bolt, except with lashings instead of rubber. but the tiki range have blocks preventing the beams moving side to side, and lashings only. In my pahi restoration, I removed the bolts (there was rot around nearly every bolt hole, also) and added blocks on the underside of the beams so they couldn't slip sideways, and they now rest on rubber pads on the hull trough corners. I think the central bolt is a bad design, because it puts a lot more stress on the hulls because the load is closer to the fulcrum (the central bolt). For example on the pahi 31, with the central bolt at half a hull beam 0.6m on a 4.4m crossbeam, that's 7.3 times leverage, but if it's on the edges of the hull (1.2) it becomes only 3.6 times! so it's a lot less stress on the connection!

Hey Dominic, great thoughts and I agree wholeheartedly... you'll see me do an about turn in a couple more vids. I'm documenting the whole process... which includes going the wrong direction for a bit! In real time, as I answer this while working on the boat I went another direction closer to what you are discussing. interested how that anti-condensation device works? is it just a sleeping tent inside the boat?
@HanunaWharramTehini Жыл бұрын
The previous owner and his partner made those. They hang from cup hooks and basically just hang below the ceiling. It works very well in the winter, clever system. The trouble is trying to get out the hatch to do a wee off the boat in the middle of the night and having the puddle fall on me! LOL

nice that the batteries don't need to sit on top of that joist/ stringer. Who knows if it has that type of strength? Also you will likely consider the weight problem of battery power since the idea of the catamaran is light weight per lineal foot of hull. the power density of battery power is very poor compared to even a small amount of diesel fuel. thank you for making these videos
@HanunaWharramTehini Жыл бұрын
It’s debatable, whether electric is ready, but it’s quickly improving. These batteries are not heavy, so I’ve no worry about where they sit for now. I’m not sure how’d I feel about it on a rough sea, mind you. 😅 In the end, I expect them to sit in a bench below the deck level, central and balanced. But, I’ve also done research to see if I could literally build a battery that would fill the bilge! If I’m both hulls and balanced, that would be an amazing solution. But the tech is questionable when diy built.
