interesting comparison. Bass response seems to show the most significant difference especially with the higher gain settings, the spectrum analyser is not so necessary, the difference can be heard. How that 'feels' when played is harder to judge. whichever makes the guitar feel 'sparkier' would be my preference. i actually play analogue synth as my main instrument, so the wider the frequency response the better for me (and no distortion!) was impressed with the generally flat response across the spectrum. With a guitar i don't like an extended response on the bass end, because it can sound 'thumpy' as the treble fades away. Guess there is a lot of personal preference involved in amp choices. Always important to use your ears, the proof of the pudding is in the eating (as my mother used to say)

Swap out the preamp 12ax7 tube for a 6sn7 tube .

Good work here with an EL 84 and an EL34. I Built a VHT Special 6 to try swapping out 6V6, 6L6 and EL34's. Had to immediately reduce the Plate voltage to get the over biased VHT from 15 watts down to 5 watts Then used THREE different pre amp tubes. 12ax7, 12at7 and 12ay7''s Swapped out the 10" 16ohm stock speaker with either a 4ohm 30 watt light and a 4 ohm 50 watt heavy speaker. Broke my wrist. Now. Waiting to test these variable tubes and speakers combinations to fully evaluate wide open power tube class A tones Thank you for your work with The EL 84 the only tube I did not account for in my experiment. Hope to be able to recreate a single Room studio recordings of each sound to record analog To 4 track Teac 1/4" tape, analog tape delay and reverb tank only recordings Accurately. ❤

Cool review!! Subscribed!! Love that little amp. I have a bunch of old nos tubes and would love to listen to all of them through that simple little class A amp. Think I like the el34 better. Sounds tighter and the el84 is a little more messy. Obviously the 84 is overdriving more. But I’d have to play through both of them to really decide which one I liked. I know I’ve always seemed to like amps with el34’s and 6v6’s most. But I’ve really liked amps with all kinds of different power tubes

Not surprising, the differences aren't much. However, if you were running this test with the output tubes in clipping, you might find the differences to be a bit larger and more noticeable.
@M3Amplification12 күн бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. I agree a test with a higher clean signal hitting the power tube would show the differences in the sound as the power tube breaks up. Maybe that will be a future video. This test I just wanted to demo the difference in swapping the power tube. The EL84 is breaking up in this test when the amp is on 10/10. The EL34 definitely is not breaking up as much. Thanks Matt
@rebelcat42011 күн бұрын
In the real world, though, most of what is attributed to power tube distortion in most amps is actually the phase inverter clipping, essentially limiting the signal and preventing the power tubes from breaking up, so I’d consider this demo pretty accurate to what one would notice if they tried taming their 100w plexi with a pair or quad of el84s
@MrBallynally211 күн бұрын
That depends on the amp's circuit..
@mygabrielle747710 күн бұрын
@rebelcat420. This is true with most amps that have a pairs of power tubes (2 or 4 of them) class AB (push/pull). You can get way more volume, headroom, wattage in that design. And the overdriven phase inverter is key to that “cranked Marshall” sound. But this amp is a true class A. One preamp tube, one power tube and no PI. As simple as it gets and a really cool little amp actually.
@rebelcat42010 күн бұрын
@@mygabrielle7477I know. That is why I said “MOST” amps. Let’s be real here and not trying to pick a fight online for a second. It’s safe to say that outside of a few rare instances, most of the classic music we listen to was recorded using class AB push-pull amp designs. I didn’t nitpick because it didn’t add to the conversation. Plain and simple this test is a great example of what MOST (except for a few outliers) would find if they swapped the power tubes in their amps. Also not saying it wouldn’t be a good comparison to hear a power tubes actually being overdriven (for science? Curiosity?), but in the grand scheme of things, the majority of amps that the majority of guitar players use, the phase inverter is the end of the line so to speak Sorry I didn’t expand previously as 1- the general public wouldn’t understand and 2- anyone who was technical would know that by my statement I have enough experience (40yrs) to know what I’m talking about. The internet really is ruining us

EL34 for the win
@void_snw12 күн бұрын
Super interesting! Preferred the 34, sounded less "scratchy", I guess. Could this be due to the different operating point for each tube to get 5w, and how would the slightly different output impedance of them fit into this?
@M3Amplification12 күн бұрын
The difference you are hearing is the Tubes. The EL84 is a brighter harsher sounding tube , The EL 34 is a little smoother and more bottom end. The EL84 breaks up earlier in this demo , so we hear more Power tube distortion than with the EL34. The operating point and output impedance differences are negligible as far as changing the sound. Thanks Matt

@@M3Amplification i have feeling that "harshness" of el84 is only because of more harmonic content. Reason is, as we all agree, early brake up. Great test, congratulation. I think that this is unique test on KZbin.

Nice demo, HS! Is the gain mostly from the preamp, or is it solely from the output tubes?
@M3Amplification13 күн бұрын
The gain (crunch/Dist) is mostly from the preamp tube being Overdriven. There is some added (Crunch/Dist) from the Power Tube at higher volume levels. It would loose some edge if I had the volume on 5. Thanks Matt
@stringtheoryx12 күн бұрын
@@M3Amplification I think it would be cool to put enough voltage on the 12ax7 plates to avoid preamp tube distortion. Then the output tubes might come into play more. Don't get me wrong. I'm a believer in both, and people who say it's solely about power tube distortion often don't know about grid blocking and such (ala Norm Crowhurst). The preamp rounding off peaks helps to avoid charging the post-PI coupling caps to the point where the output tubes choke. McIntosh used a cool circuit way back, where they direct coupled cathode followers after the PI so they could drive more current into the output tube grids. I think I used that on one of my prototypes. I should dig that up. Anyway, this is interesting stuff. I've got several half-rack boxes that use EL84's (old Mullards) driving a dummy load, which then feeds a speaker sim. So that can directly feed into a mixing console. Pretty smooth sounding.
@davidseal686311 күн бұрын
Both preamp gain and power amp gain have an impact on how the overall crunch sounds. The current coming from the preamp stage sets the overall performance.

Seems like it's just a different kind of single coil
@humbuckersoup757114 күн бұрын
The point were are trying to make here is: A traditional vintage single coil is not the same thing as a split humbucker. It would be like saying a motorcycle is the same thing as a Ford F-150 with two tires removed. Both have only two wheels, but they are entirely different kinds of vehicles. A traditional vintage single coil is a entirely different kind of pickup compared to a split humbucker.

Hey Matt nice amp , question, can I safely connect my 50watt tube amp to the ps1 and then connect direct to my audio interface without connecting any speaker cabinet? For playing with headphones and recording ? Is it safe for the amp?
@humbuckersoup757120 күн бұрын
Hi Alan, Kevin here. Matt is having trouble replying directly. His response is below: Alan, The PS1 doesn’t have a built in load, so you must connect a speaker or a dummy load. I use an 8 Ohm 100W dummy load for silent recording. Like this one: www.amazon.com/Parts-Express-Non-Inductive-Dummy-Resistor/dp/B0002KRDGC You will need to solder on a 1/4” plug to plug it into the PS1. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks, Matt
