Suggest removing egr valve and cooler. You use a pressure washer to clean cooler and intake. Just finished this job. Also, replace all rubber gaskets. Clear all fault codes and let car relearn.

It's easy enough to pull the EGR cooler, EGR valve, and intake. Look at them, guarantee they're clogged. Clean everything out and put it back together. There's plenty of YT vids on how to pull the EGR cooler and valve. If you've done this before it can be done in a day, otherwise plan on taking a weekend to do it right, One day to get it apart and clean, a second day to put it together. You've really got to soak these parts in some strong cleaner and rinse thru numerous times to really get it clean (it'll easily take an afternoon just getting out the gunk and carbon from the cooler, valve, and intake ports). Not kidding, cleaning is very time consuming. You'll want to get it as clean as possible or you'll be doing it again in 6 months. Or just buy new parts and replace: $$$ V.S. Your Time.

I have bought a secondhand intakemanifold and EGR-cooler, both wiht a lot dirt and builtup. I soaked them in dieseloil but there still was some builtup. I used ovencleaner and the dirt came loose. I only have to put them on the engine. If you keep your EGR and intakemanifold clean you don't have to worry about rattling, troubelcodes or failing headgaskets

I've used Carb and Brake Cleaner, Purple Power, Simple Green, Oxy-Clean.... I have yet to find anything that rips the carbon/oil build up out of the EGR. Everything is a soak, rinse, blow out, repeat ad nauseum process until it's cleaned to my satisfaction. I'm not expecting to make it shiny, new, and eat off it, but I figure the cleaner I get everything, the longer I can drive before I have to do it all again.

I just changed both of the secondary air valves today on my 05 Tundra. I replaced mine (Dorman valves) without taking the intake out because I wasn't changing any parts located under the intake. If your hands and arms are not too big you can lay a thick piece of foam on the engine, lay across your engine and get your hands back there to remove the valves (take any rings and watch off). You'll need to remove the two wiring harness bolts (you'll need to jam a piece of wood to lift the harness up) and the bolt holding the cable housing to the fire wall (I tied the harness and this cable housing back to give me more room). Tools you will need: A swivel head 1/4" ratchet (a very important tool, mine was made by Titan and purchased for $17 at O'rielly's auto parts), a 10mm 6 point socket, a short 1/4" extension or 10mm 1/4" deep socket, a 12" long 1/4" extension, a flashlight and some patience. It can be done and you'll save yourself a ton of time.

@robrig1646
@robrig1646 4 ай бұрын
87's not a problem, it's not a high compression performance engine where low octane will cause knocking and performance problems. This build up has nothing to do with octane, it's engine design and EGR/PVC system.

@robrig1646

@@matthewmurphyrose4793 I doubt it. Octane is to prevent knock in high power engines, that's all it does, doesn't make engine run cleaner. Prius uses an Atkinson Cycle, if anything it's the complete opposite of high power, it's like a 'reduced power' engine.

I recently bought a 2010 Prius with the problems you described. 70 years ago, I used to hang out around a GM truck repair station that was run by a few WW2 Red Ball Express mechanics. [I pumped gas there.] Everything they did ran fine, courtesy of the US Government and its petroleum engineers. A few products that worked well then have survived a very long time. Two are Marvel Mystery Oil and Rislone (extremely slippery). Also, more recently, -- Techtron. That Prius said i delivered 42.3 mpg for the last 1000+ miles. But I was getting less under ideal conditions, 70F I tried the best of Rislone -- use with two tank fulls -- The misfire stopped and the MPG rose to 45.5. After the second tank of Rislone, I added a tank full with Techtron and nursed th MPG to above 48.5 on combined Highway and regular. Something good is happening, and I'll keep trying to see how much more I can get. I am driving slower than usual (65 now) and the weather is a perfect 70 degrees. I'm eager to seel how well that lasts, especially when the fall/winter sets in. Useful advice: Avoid "crap gas." All refined gasoline reaches NE through pipelines, where they drain into immense tanks owned by brand names who add adatives. Gasoline tankers carry two grades that they mix to form three levels: regular, medium, and hi-test. I put about 180K miles (on top of 60K -- 240K) on another 2010 Prius and always tried to use Sunoco which cost a little more but always seems to deliver 5-10% more miles. It's all about the adatives. BTW - Something I noticed recently -- Mobil One has oil guaranteed for 20,000 miles.
@robrig1646
@robrig1646 11 ай бұрын
Good info. I gotta try the Rislone, see what happens. I do know my Lie-O'Meter always says I'm getting 2-3 mpg better than calculations after a top off vs mileage since previous fill. As far as 20,000 mile "guarantee' on motor oil, I wouldn't do it. I run full synth and still change mine at recommended Intervals: oil is way cheaper than new engine.
@urbanturbine
@urbanturbine 17 күн бұрын
@@robrig1646 20,000 is insane. It is not just the oil that you change, it is the build up of other crap that you get rid of when you change your oil. Even 10,000 miles is a stretch. if you read the Toyota maintanance guide, they put an asterisk where it says 10,000. You really have to be driving pretty much all highway miles to warrant 10000 mile stretch on oil change. If you have harsh winters (half the country), lots of urban city driving, delivery driving, short commutes etc, you should replace every 5000 as per Toyota in the maintenance guide. Even the cheapest oil is better than not changing your oil in correct intervals.

I believe so. If you replaced the EGR and/or the cooler and didn't unclog the intake EGR passages you will still get engine issues. Pull off the intake and clean it out like I did in the video.
