If you ever get a chance to feel how the Mercury Verrado shifts into gear, it might win you over. The Yamaha sounds like it’s going to break something shifting into gear.

As I understand it the smaller HP Merc engines are made in China. So much for made in the USA.

Around salt water we see many more Yamahas with internal block and head corrosion than Merc. In fact I don't remember any Mercs outside of stern drives with rotted out blocks and heads. I see Hondas and Suzukis with major corrosion and Mercury does have some external corrosion problem mainly bolt and stud holes, hood cables and that sort of thing. To be fair though I am in import motor country so there are more Japanese brands here and we are up river a ways so maybe some unintended engine flushing is a plus too. Not sure yet about the Tohatsu/Mercurys. All Mercs 50 HP and below are Tohatsu built and it seems the Japanese brands are the worst at corrosion. As far as parts cost? Pick one. They are all way too high!

Looking to upgrade to a 150 hp. Been following a Yamaha owners group for a few years now. The Yamaha 150s are notorious for dry exhaust rot..how does a Merc 150 compare?

We had nothing but issues with our 250 and 300 horsepower Yamaha engines. We haven’t had any issues with the 300 and 500 horsepower Mercury engines. In my opinion it’s because Yamaha chose to utilize6 cylinder engines where Mercury utilized 8 cylinder engines. The 8 cylinder engine isn’t working as hard to produce that same 250-300 hp as the 6 cylinder is and also provides better torque.

I have owned all brands. Merc has come a long way. Absolutely quiet and reliable. I’ve had good luck with Japanese engines. For a while. Then the corrosion issues make them incredibly shitty. They are awesome for 5 yrs.

I’ve been on both styles as a deck hand to charter fishermen and commercial fishermen and honestly it really depends what size boat you have and what you want to do with it. I’d say if your just going out on the lake with a couple of buddies and fishing then outboards are the way to go (in the case of my dad this has always been his go to setup) however if your taking a group of guys out on the water to fish particularly as a charter captain, taking your wife and kids out to the beach swimming, or just running a big ass commercial fishing boat then stern drives (especially if they’re diesels) are your ticket. AGAIN! I’ve never actually owned ether but I have 12 years experience off and on as a deck hand and also fishing with my friends and even once dated a girl whose dad owned a boat plus having a dad who owns a boat and this is just my take on it. That said if I ever buy a boat it’ll probably be about 16 foot long and will have a godevil 23 hp Vanguard long tail on it.

I have had lots of outboard engines new and used, ranging from 5 - 200hp. All mercury and yamaha engines I've had were nothing short of awesome. Except small 4-strokes (under 20hp) they suck. I wish yamaha Enduro were available in Canada. I recently purchased a mercury sea pro 150 and I'm extremely pleased with my purchase.

He left out 1 detail. The Yamaha's are wider, meaning it's more challenging to run a twin outboard set-up. Compared to Mercury's more skinny design, making twin set-up more friendly giving a bonus to space. I'm a Evinrude guy, it's Sad they closed shop cause overall, light weight slender design & hole shot performance. Not to mention evinrude rated power from the pro shaft... I.e (200hp) it makes 200hp at the prop after drive train loss making it roughly 215hp at the powerhead, everyone else rates from the powerhead meaning it actually makes closer to 180-190hp at the prop. Explaining why evinrudes where so quick

I work at a dealer that sells both brands. I am also a certified and well experienced technician in both brands with 13 years of experience. If you want to be sure your boating season isn't ruined by engine problems, choose Yamaha. I have personally tested the 115hp, 150hp, 200hp, 225hp and 300hp engines of both brands head to head on the same boats, and i've never once seen a Mercury engine outperform a Yamaha with the correct propeller and engine height specified by the factory for both engines. I am so sick and tired of doing warranty jobs on these cheap Mercury engines with all their cheap plastic, poor wiring, bad engine mounts, leaking exhaust manifolds, paint flaking off, shift actuators malfunctioning, gearcases leaking from factory installation issues and much more. Do us mechanics a favour and choose Yamaha, please.

Oh, and let's not forget how absolutely awful the servo steering on the bigger Mercury engines is. The servo pump takes over 90A to run at max, and that's insane! It also stays running all the time, even when you're not steering, and it is noisy as hell. The steering is HARDER on a 300hp V8 Mercury with a servo than on a 300hp Yamaha with a standard Seastar servo-less steering. How could they make the decision that this was a good idea? The hydroelectric steering system on Mercury engines is so bad that every single one of my colleagues thought there was something wrong with the setup because it would take a full second for the engine to respond after turning the wheel. Turns out that's absolutely normal. The system takes a while to figure out where you want to turn, give the signal to start the pump, and finally give enough hydraulic pressure to turn the engine. Yamaha's FBW steering is instantaneous. Go ahead and try it yourself!

I run Yamaha no problem but my commercial fishing buddies moved over to Mercury in the 115 to 150 hp range and swear by them. Fewer moving parts, bulletproof performance, light weight and very torquey and fuel efficient they say. Both are good engines, if I had to repower because the Yamaha died before i did i would give Mercury a shot.

If you want an engine that has high revs, and a lot of power to race and you need speed and you’re not too worried about longevity, mercury is for you. If you want an engine that you could use today and put away this afternoon and not started or run it for three monthsYamaha is for you. Mercury doesn’t have necessarily the best track record for sitting idle for too long Yamaha does. And this is from personal experience.
