But the ice should also be down in the tank?
@christopherdever55366 күн бұрын
As you go higher in the atmosphere it is cooler due to the lower pressure. So the ice at the top of the tank actually helps to mimic the cooler temperatures that would naturally be found at higher elevations above earths surface. This combined with the warmer temperature at the bottom of the tank (representing the surface of earth warmed by the sun) results in the convective process beginning.

I struggle to understand the connection between temperature and pressure. Why in the atmosphere the low pressure has cooler temperature and the high pressure the opposite? And why the opposite happens in the sea level. Also why in the summer the high pressure is associated with hot temperature but the lower pressure the opposite?
@christopherdever553612 күн бұрын
I think it makes more sense when you think of the atmosphere as a giant dynamic fluid tank. What gets the high pressure zones started is falling denser air and what gets low pressure zones started is less dense rising air. However, as the warm air rises it begins to cool, condense and create cloud cover and possibly rain. These conditions often result in less sun and ultimately cooler surface temps. On the other hand the falling cooler air warms as it approaches the surface (check out adiabatic heating if you want to get into the nuts and bolts of this) and is generally less humid, resulting in clearer skies and ultimately solar heating of the surface. So the dynamic that got the whole convective cycle going has different outcomes or results than the initial cause would indicate. A final note is that it is true that pressure increases with lower altitude and decreases with higher altitude, but this is due to the weight of the atmosphere. However the unequal heating of the earth means that there will be "columns" of air that are relatively less or more dense due to differences in temperature. Hope this is clearer than mud:)
@Pontic_warrior12 күн бұрын
@christopherdever5536 Thanks! One last question. So according to this cycle and sea breeze model, when the pressure in the sea level is lower, in the atmosphere it's higher and the opposite(higher pressure on surface means lower pressure in the atmosphere). But we also know that lower pressure on the surface is connected with lower pressure in the atmosphere, so doesn't this also contradict the previous?

Good point. Any bullet that travels faster than sound (which is most of them) will hit you without warning. Your best bet would be to react to the muzzle flash, but you still wouldn't be likely to dodge a bullet unless you were really far away and incredibly fast.

Thanks, Bro. I have one sitting on the Lift for Monday Morning. I concluded that pulling the manifold was the way to go after hearing all the shortcut guys say they were doing the job a second time. I don't know why Mitchell says to pull the alternator and drain and disconnect the coolant hoses at the trans cooler.
@christopherdever5536Ай бұрын
Yeah I thought I could do this the easy way...only it wasn't the easy way. As for Mitchell - good question. I didn't have to. Good luck with your work. Bet you will get it done faster than I did.

Nice! What I appreciate is that you seem careful with your words and don't say the common (and incorrect) how much water the air can "hold". The air doesn't hold the water vapor; the water vapor exists in the vapor state in the air. And in theory, even if there were no air at all, those same 15 grams would exist per cubic meter at 17 C. It's all about equilibrium between the liquid and gaseous state. It just goes to show that one can teach a concept in a simplified manner without being grossly misleading 👍👍

good job Teach! The observation I had was while the ice remained cold, the rock probably cooled off much quicker, which may lessen the dramatic rise and fall relationship.🤷🏼♂️ As a new boat captain I am trying to get a deeper understanding of weather. This was a great demo..thank you!

Thanks for the positive feedback. I have tried using a fish tank heater to be able to sustain the "updraft" a bit longer but it just didn't give off enough heat to do the job. If there was a way to use some kind of floating material instead of food coloring and a heater instead of a rock this could seriously lengthen the time the demo would work. Cheers!
