I shoot with a 500mm f/4 IF-ED P Nikkor lens. If I were considering adding another telephoto lens, I would select the 800mm.

Why don´t you show us how smoothly yoy can switch between the 400 and the 800? Either you go out with the 400 or the 800 with your converter in your pocket! Maybe the 400 can be on your backpack but a much better combo is a lightweight 100-400 in the backpack and the 800 on the camera. Or just the 180-600 zoom with a converter in your pocket (with it´s worse IQ @ 600).

A little too much editing work rather than lens comparison ideas for me. I use the 1.4TC II with my 500PF on my Z's & have very good success so I wonder if you have considered that. Depending on how much you would use the 800PF, that combo will get you close with far less $$ out of your pocket. I have the 180-600 that I use if I don't know what I will be getting into for range but if I do know what I will be shooting I'd use a prime. For distant travel the 100-400 w 1.4TC is what I pack because of size, weight & versatility, plus it is an S line lens which is better quality overall.

One enjoyed the video per se : however one notices the author digresses : is this a 500mm pf review, or is it a consideration of different lens options, or could it be a photoshop tutorial

Been using the Z 800 PF for two years now and love it. I am over 75 but still find it easy to handhold and it gives superb results. A brilliant piece of Nikon glass.

Thanks for a great video - good to find another Capture One user doing this stuffr ather than Lightroom!! I used to have the Nikon 500 PF and, yes, it is a fantastic lens and gave me some really great images with super smooth bokeh. However, I sold mine off and now have three Z-mount telephotos - the Z 100-400, the Z 180-600 and the Z800 PF. Of these, my two most used lenses are the 180-600 and the 800. I have used the 100-400 and the 800 for over two years now (which is when I sold my 500PF) and love the quality of images both these lenses give, however there was obviously a big gap between the top end of the 100-400 and the 800. I tried tele-converters but could see the loss of sharpness. I was concerned that the 180-600, not being an S-line lens, represented a drop in quality, however, when I tested one I realised it is actually a really sharp lens and filled the gap perfectly at an extraordinarily good price. Personally I am convinced the 180-600 is made to the same standards as an S-Line lens but that Nikon made a marketing decision to price it at a level to replace the old 200-500 (which i also used to have), knowing this would make it appeal to the massive market clamouring for a versatile, good quality but competitively priced lens. Lets face it, Nikon already have a number of very expensive telephotos aimed at the elite who are prepared to splash out over £10,000 (yes I am in the UK) for powerful f/2.8 / f/4 glass that few of us can afford!!

What was your impression of the OM-1? I know you use a pro Nikon setup. Would you recommend it to a hobbyist? Or would a lower level Nikon body (perhaps apsc) or Sony be better? Thanks for your time.

I started doing bird photography during the Covid Pandemic because i could isolate myself from other people at the beach as my hiking trails became full of people who had no idea of proper educate on hiking trails .My landscape cameras and lenses were not really adequate for bird photography my longest lens was a Tamron 75- 300 . I first upgraded to a 55- 300 PLM fast focus lens and i upgraded to a newer camera body and a 150- 450 4.5 - 5.6 lens

I've been seeing this camera mostly being compared to other cameras twice its price and holding up pretty well says a lot now if you look at cameras at that price point, it's just the best.

Great info in this video Alan! Very informative! Also, you mentioned the long end of the 24-120 is great for photographing mammals on safari, so i have a question. I currently have a Fuji X-T4 with the Fuji 70-300 (inc. 1.4 teleconverter) and a Tamron 17-70 2.8. Both are great lenses, but I was wondering if a 135mm FF equivalent prime is something you'd recommend? The reason I'm asking is because I was thinking of having the 70-300 w/1.4 combined with the 90mm (135 equivalent) F2 on another body once i get it because of the amazing sharpness and extra light gathering at F2. I'd definitely use the Tamron for landscapes when not on safari, but I get the feeling the 90mm would be amazing for mammals that are closer to the vehicle. I'd love to know your advice. Thanks dude 👍

I own the 500pf and I think it’s a wonderful lens. It’s a keeper however, I too am considering a longer prime for the frame magnification that only a long prime with a wide aperture can give. Good luck.

Just a bit jealous. Wolves have been my favorite animal for most of my life, mostly the gray wolf but red wolves are beautiful too. I'd love to be able to see them in the wild. I had no idea that the red wolves were quite that endangered.

Nice video, enjoyable vibe and pleasing pictures despite the harsh light. It’s a bird and wildlife enthusiast, I would really appreciate having a note on screen such as species name so we can learn new species while watching your video, exif are also nice to have for those looking for reference settings or creative ideas. Personably bird and other animal name on screen is super useful. Cheers and keep the good work coming :)

Instead of using the 180-600 in DX mode to get to 900mm digitally, losing half your megapixels, buy the Z 1.4x teleconverter and give yourself a more croppable image with an optically enlarged 840mm lens. The sharpness of this teleconcverter is amazingly sharp (usually a lot of unsharpness in teleconverters but not in this case). If you find yourself in low light you can remove the converter and use that DX mode on. your camera.

Baffles will only work if you can isolate your feeder from nearby trees, fences, posts, decks etc…. Otherwise squirrels can jump further than you realize making the baffle pointless. The feeder needs to be on its own away from most everything else. The only time I have had squirrels on my feeders are when I accidentally left something nearby they could jump off of. Also, place perches on and near your feeders and use them to take clean photos of birds!
