The key to this is that we as musos need to listen. Active intentional listening to as many people as possible is as important as practice. I'm a singer and I found my Steve Davis in Hans Hotter.

1000% YES. For me it's either Joe Henderson or Dexter Gordon. I wouldn't personally argue for their similarity but I enjoy both's styles regardless.
@ShnailАй бұрын
As a P.S Gordon's "Our Man in Paris", and Henderson's Bossa in general as well as "Page One" are definite inspiration for me. I will also totally be checking out that EP.

In my first year at music college, my teacher changed my embouchure massively to resemble the way that worked for him. 🤷🏻♂️ Huge mistake that I am still paying the price for today. A semester sorting out my breathing would have been a better move.
@ShawnBellMusicАй бұрын
I think that is unfortunately a somewhat common thing that happens to many players. I definitely personally known a handful of other brass players with similar stories. This is the first time I have ever actively tried to change my setup, and I think it was the right call for me; however, I am always really cautious when recommending embouchure changes to students. Even if they have some really "non traditional" playing habits, it is so easy to become overly focused on how things look or feel that they stop thinking about how the end goal is to make music not just to operate the instrument. As you stated, more often than not, working on other fundamental aspects of playing can solve many problems that may initially seem like they are setup problems.

Shawn - that is a wonderful set of insights, many thanks for sharing, very much appreciated. For what it's worth I think that we can really hear that core sound coming through even over a YT feed to my laptop - keep going! [On a personal note - I've been going through a similar process having lessons again after decades of developing 'habits'. It is quite an eye opener - but that sound when it all comes together....]
@PeterWetherillАй бұрын
Yes, balance! Try holding an easy note like F without your shoes on and try to feel the resonance from your horn down to your feet. When you can feel the resonant vibration then you have found your balance of air to embochure! After you find this continue up and down chromatically for all notes.

Congratulations on your breakthru Shawn, and thanks for sharing. Your professionalism in working through the pain is admirable. Going through a daunting, doubt-filled and time-consuming process cannot have been easy. Long may you continue to reap benefits, hone the 'bone tone, and feel the fun(k). btw, you often make comments about your supposed shortcomings as a player - that is objectively excessive self-criticism. Any listener can hear that you sound good: accept their judgment! Accede! 😄

I’ve been on vacation. Ive been downloading the handouts but haven’t caught up on practicing. When I open Patreon, It only opens the last twp lessons and states “ you’re all caught up!” And I can load later lessons except by going back through You Tube. Any fix for this? Was there a background track for Confirmation Byas? Also I wanted to ask about changing embouchere. Did you change mouthpiece? Im using invisiline braces and it seems to be changing my ability to heit upper range.
@ShawnBellMusicАй бұрын
Hmm, I'm not sure why previous lessons are not being shown to you on patreon. Are you accessing it through a web browser or the app? There is not a separate backing track for "Confirmation Byas" uploaded. Let me know if you would find one helpful to practice with. It is relatively easy for me to export one without me playing the etude on the recording. Regarding the embouchure change question, this week's lesson actually covers why/how I have been going about making this change. Hopefully it can provide some insight.

I havent recorded trombone in quite a while but id always use a rwally nice condenser. Bit battle with a yuck sound. Im thinking lowering from 3K up to 15K will help a bunch
@ShawnBellMusicАй бұрын
You could also try a tube condenser if you have access to one. I have found that tube mics usually sound pretty good on trombone. You still may need to tame some of the high mids and the highs as you mentioned to get a sound that isn't too harsh or airy.
@stephenthompson9722Ай бұрын
@@ShawnBellMusic Live I always used a Shure beta clip on mic and that's fantastic. But that was playing ska and punk rock so no one notices. It would sound just like my horn it was amazing. But record that on its own and listen back...the amount of air flow picked up sounds horrible. Your video has given me motivation to try again

why does this work?
@ShawnBellMusicАй бұрын
Using the pentatonic scale in this way catches all the colorful notes of the #11 sound while allowing us as improvisers to connect with the pentatonic melodies that are such a common part of the language. Since the ideas tend to be things that our ear connects with easily, the less "inside" notes (major 7th, #11, 9s) just sound like they are part of a melody rather than sounding "out".

This is literally the first thing beginning improvisers should be taught... took me SO LONG to figure out how to get melody and harmony working together instead of against each other. Jazz education seems to have a chronic with issue with connecting tech skill with actually getting the feel you want... no wonder berklee funk is a thing

I love the simplicity of this approach! Thanks for sharing this, Shawn. Any similar approaches for simple lines over major ii-V-Is? An easy way to practice a line that hits the chord tones by playing a straight forward scale of 8ths, maybe with a bebop feel?
@ShawnBellMusic2 ай бұрын
Using harmonic minor actually still works pretty well on major ii Vs. You just have to make sure to resolve to major 3rds on the I chord. You will end up with a little bit of dissonance, mostly on the ii chord, but since it resolves pretty quickly, it all sort of works out.
