btw, i mean the normal AO in the very start, you have some mod that slightly changes how it's calculated, in normal minecraft a single block produces an AO pattern that looks like an elongated hexagon, yours looks like an octagon

I personally find these techniques ugly. Minecraft's beauty comes from work with the style of Minecraft which is blocky. These attempts to anti aliases make Minecraft builds look like you are just trying to copy real life instead of using the style Minecraft has been designed around.
@baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam13 күн бұрын
I 100% Agree. It reminds me of soulless Hypixel maps. Another way that I see these builds is like McDonald's; they feel mass-produced and lack the unique charm and creativity that come from working within Minecraft's original limitations.
@cooltwo13 күн бұрын
@dmanzawsome Thanks for sharing your opinion! While you're totally right about me trying to make my builds look realistic, that doesn't make it for everyone. The anti-aliasing technique I shared is a bit weird so I totally understand that not everyone is going to want to use it but I hope it can be useful for those that are interested.
@cooltwo13 күн бұрын
@baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam You do realize my build is 100% vanilla right? Like it is within Minecraft's original limitations. But just because I work with the same limitations you do doesn't mean you have to like what I built so totally fair for you to not like the museum I made. I do think some of the other builds I've made are a little less soulless if you're interested in checking out some of my other recent videos. I usually try to include interiors into all my builds as I want my little town I'm making to feel lived in. And I'm hoping to make my museum into a place where I can store all the stuff that I've found on my travels.

1:35 from my VERY LIMITED experience in 3D modelling, I can confidently say *this* is what Normal Maps are for. This is what you call a "light map". They allow you to take any object and "bake" lighting into them, using ambient occlusion. You can even give low-resolution meshes a high-resolution look, or create texture on a flat surface. The mod "Phosphor" aims to fix the inefficiencies of Minecraft's lighting engine, you should check it out. 4:15 I have an explanation for this too! So there are "cold" lights and "warm" lights, just as there are "cold" and "warm" shadows. The direct light you see from the sea lantern is a warm light, and acts like an incandescent lightbulb. The shadows of this light will be "cold", just like the light from outside, which is a "bounced" or "reflected" light. You see this reflected light even more at 5:30, where the reflected light illuminates the shadow. I love to use this effect in my artwork and my builds, making them warmer or colder depending on where the light is coming from and what color it is. I don't have an example on hand, I do believe Marco Bucci explains this in detail. 7:00 yes, most if not every light block is animated, there are even non-light blocks that are animated. Prismarine being the most commonly known example. 15:00 I think you did beautifully on the rendering there! Not a lot of people think about de-saturating their colors as they move towards shadow, but that is indeed what is happening. Less light is hitting the object, thus less color is reflected. I love the transition back to color as you bring the mossy cobblestone in - as more color will *also* make a shadow darker.
@cooltwo13 күн бұрын
Thank you for such a thought out comment! I really enjoyed reading your analysis of everything. The only thing I have to add is I think I was right in calling what I'm talking about as a light map. While light and normal maps are similar, they actually serve different purposes as normal maps are used to imply detail, light maps are used to imply lighting in general. It's hard to explain in a comment but I'm thinking of doing a video on normal maps in the future.

I really like the way you did the shading on the dome, the gradient looks great! The only thing I'd mention is that the highlight spot looks kind of odd, since it's untinted where the rest gets 'warmer' as it goes. Usually light brightens and tints the highlight, the middle is most close to the base color, and the opposite color of the light tints the shadow. For instance, in daylight things tend to be tinted slightly yellow, and shadows are blue/purple tinted. It all depends on the color of the light source, so looking at the dome the light is white, meaning it has no tint, and the shadow is green as if cast from a red light. I know that it probably doesn't matter much to most people, and I really don't know how I'd execute my idea correctly, but I thought some of my color theory knowledge might be helpful. Either way, I love these videos! I really aught to get back into minecraft building.
@cooltwo13 күн бұрын
I love all the knowledge you have on color theory, I still don't understand all that kind of stuff quite yet myself. And I do wish I had more options for the highlight but I was really limited with needing stairs/slabs. But I'll try and keep what you said in mind for next time

I have to disagree with the part about a lot games giving examples of what AA does. While the industry has been getting better about this, I think most games still don't give you examples or explanations. I hope in the future it's the industry standard to do so because I know it took a while for me to learn what a lot of settings do and that was only because I was interested in doing research on the side.

@NickAndriadze17 күн бұрын
I think you did a great job of simplistically explaining what a ''light map baking'' is, even if in a Minecraft sense it's just a glorified way to call a highlight and/or a shadow. Also the techniques used on the dome of the Museum is very nice, but the rest of the build feels a little bit flat to me, especially how there's no breakup between the copper roof and the rest of the structure, plus the vertical uniformness of the main body despite the differing textures. It's nonetheless a great build, though. Also I really want to believe that the ''Mega dome of Doom'' is an Iskall reference.
@cooltwo17 күн бұрын
Thanks, I'm glad you liked the video! And the reason I've focused so much on the dome is because it's the one part of the build that isn't made with straight lines which is really hard to achieve in Minecraft so I kept coming up with ideas to try and make it better. If you want my breakdown of the rest of the build, I have a video from my survival series where I originally made it and I go into detail about the rest of it (some pretty cool techniques in there). And I think calling anything an "X of doom" is totally an Iskall reference lol
@NickAndriadze17 күн бұрын
@@cooltwo Alright, yes I understand that the dome is totally the most visually striking part of that design so it's worth the most effort _and_ the most analysing, plus it's the part where you can show off techniques like shading the best (There's a reason why art students draw so many realistic shaded and highlit spheres).

3:51 the first light in this setup has it's light map updated every 2 game ticks, any light after, has it's light map calculation delayed by 2 ticks, the game's lighting breaks when it has to calculate multiple light maps in roughly half a second, each 10 tick span Minecraft's code is old and kinda unfixable, it's also incredibly inefficient
@cooltwo17 күн бұрын
Interesting, I didn't know the specifics about the updates, I just knew that you generally don't want to update them too frequently all over the place
@allancoelho690517 күн бұрын
@@cooltwo and if you have one too many light map updates the game will compensate having to re render multiple light sources with a slowed down tickrate, causing TPS lag, light maps and redstone are updated through game ticks, and one too many tick update could temporarily shut down a server, that's why redstone is restricted or entirely prohibited on most non technical servers
@cosmovelez17 күн бұрын
1 thing I find very helpful 4 builds is taking a screenshot(or a pic w/ my phone) in b&w, so I can see the values more clearly. This feels especially useful for this type of lighting w/ blocks. If you look at the dome in b&w you can see that the more oxidized color is a really similar value. In general I tend to focus on values more than colors, but I’m also not great w/ colors so it’s kinda a crutch too. Rlly cool demonstration, the anti-ambient-occlusion seems super useful !!
