Durban is neglected, rundown and dirty. It isn't dangerous per se provided you avoid the city center by night, but years and years and years of corruption and looting of the eThekwini metro - the municipal district into which Durban falls - have corroded the infrastructure into a grimy, rusty mess. As goes South African cities it is more of an eyesore than a tourist destination, and yes, the loud, noisy cars are a feature of the culture.

I am going in Hornblower ride on 2025 October. I went once to Niagara in Winter Thanksgiving 2008 but boat closed. Bummer. I sugest we name as "Niagara Falls Queen" comparing to USA's Maid of the Mist
@SavagesAdventures9 күн бұрын
That’s a good name! Or “Queen of the falls” to match maid of the mist. It would be a really cool experience to be able to ride it in the winter when the falls freeze over.

Quiet interesting. African Americans relocating to SA feel safer in South Africa than in the US. Yet this American tourist seems to supercharge the crime problem in SA. As a South African I don't think I can feel safe in America either. Police violence against blacks, gun culture and terrible food. Honestly I don't dream of ever setting foot in America. South Africans and Africans at large must be serious about building a prosperous SA and the continent at large. Africa is the only place that can ever feel safe for Africans.

Don't forget to visit the interesting squatter settlement at the South end of the Victoria Embankment during your next visit. Burnt trees, acres of litter & random filth as no ablutions available, with stoned illegal immigrants stumbling around through the squalor like zombies. Would make a fantastic dystopian setting for an apocalyptically themed movie!

Correction: The University of KZN is one of the best in the WORLD. If this is all you saw of Durban you did yourselves a great disservice. I don't know who scared you so much about this country. There is crime alright but not as alarming as it is in your country - one must just be alert when in the street or in secluded areas. You missed all the Durban vibe and next time give Umhlanga a miss and book yourselves into a place close to the city. There are numerous worldclass restaurants and others that are uniquely South African in all our big cities- you ' ll be amazed.

Looking at this makes my heart a bit sore. I'm South African and we used to go to Durban twice a year on holiday. It was amazing. But now it seems a bit run down. Went a few months ago znd so sad to see the waterslides empty...no rickshaws....the rundown buildings...we went to a mall and we were the ONLY white people in there, quite a few people took a second look.... But there was still a chill vibe in the air....sone really beautiful buildings there....We stayed in a hotel (work related trip) which was great...got a suite with full kitchen and amazing views for price small cheaper hotel room in cape town... weather wasnt great but i really enjoyed it....we need to revive Durban...its so worth saving
