At 12:51 you add one inch to the height to make the rectangle. This is 50% more. If I am making a different size dome is it always one inch more to make the rectangle, or 50% more to make the rectangle?
@compasslayouts19 сағат бұрын
Hello @bobpalmer5923. So you don't nessaserly need to give it one inch more. It can be the exact length of that line number so in this case line#1 which looked like about 2 inches. The one inch i added was just to give room to expose the silhouette outline of the pattern itself. So in this case if line #1 was about 2 inches, I figured in my head that it would give about a half inch exposed on either side of line #1 when giving it one inch. Hope that explains it somehow lol. But no, you can make a random box at almost any size you want as long as it fits the longest line length #. Have an awsome day.

Thanx so much for all the great videos. Went to sheet metal apprenticeship school back in 1976-1979. I specialized in making SS kitchen equipment for several large Southern California shops. Worked in the trades until 1989 when I suddenly changed careers. I spent most of my time as a layout man in SS shops. However in apprenticeship school I was taught air conditioning & heating & part of our schooling was drafting & knowing how to make various fittings. I never got to make all of the fittings I wanted. I’m now 68 & retired & have lots of time. I started watching your videos & it all came back to me. I now spend each morning in the shop making a fitting out of card stock paper. Lots of fun. I never forgot was just rusty. I am going to make all the fittings you have made & display them in my shop. Keep up the great work & videos it sure helps.

That's cool @motorpapa3446 It's interesting how people back then went about laying these out by hand assuming there wasn't Autocad back then that would cut any shape from plasma table out of a software in minutes. Were you making ss kitchen sinks or oven range tops that would probably be a square tonsquare transition? I'm usually just fabricating the vents that are required of me from blue prints and that's it. But I do find it fascinating what a compass can do with all that triangulation to come up with shapes. That great that you have time now to revisit the steps and making these shapes out of card stock. Thx for watching my videos and I'll have more to come. Have a great day.

@@compasslayouts we made commercial kitchens for all the big casinos in Las Vegas. We did the queen mary in Long Beach, spruce goose when it was in Long Beach. Also did the mgm grand twice because it burned down once. We had Disneyland, magic mountain, knots berry farm, Howard Johnson hotels & countless others. We used parallel line development most of the time. I was a apprentice and did a lot of dish tables, rolling carts, sinks, hoods, waitress stations, bakers tables you name it. I finally graduated to some of the big cooking counters however they were difficult. I also worked commercial refrigeration where we built nothing but refrigerators for years. We had Denny’s restaurants, Bobs, Carl’s junior & to many to mention. Good times with great guys teaching me how. Also I was a shear man, notcher, brake operator, fabricator, tig welder, shop foreman, head layout man & superintendent. I also learned electrical & plumbing among countless things. Keep up the great work, you make it fun for guys like me.

When I did it, I put 2 not adjacent points of the pentagon directly above 2 of the square points. Fun to see how we interpreted the idea differently, but our methods were otherwise pretty much the same. Glad to know I picked up the method correctly. Love the videos. Your method of making the pentagon seemed a lot cleaner than the way I did it.

Hello, I am trying to design a little dome-shaped hat for a newborn baby. Circumference: 37.7 cm. Diameter: 18.84 cm. Radius: 9.42 cm. But I don’t want to sew together 12 pieces of sheepskin pie. I want to only sew 4 quarter pie pieces together. How would I calculate the size of the 1/4 hemisphere? Many thanks for your help.
@compasslayouts20 күн бұрын
Hello @carolynfranke6690. So I would set the compass at half the18.84 cm to half so at 9.42 cm to make that half circle. Divide that half circle in (2) pcs to get (2) pies so that you get your (4) pies. Then simply follow the steps on this video that you got reference to staring at the point where to draw a center line in the middle of the 1/4 pie. This is assuming you have a compass or some sort of made up tool to make perfe t circles or arcs. I will add that because you want it made with 4 pies, it will not come out having a nice radius top for lack of adding more pies. But I understand that sewing 12 pies would be a too much work. Perhaps I'll do up and post it on a shorts and see what it will look like so you have an idea.
@carolynfranke669020 күн бұрын
Hello, thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I actually accomplished sewing the little hat together in another way. I first got my 1/2 pointy shape, 1/12 of the circle and put repeated it x 3, putting the points together and then drew lines to fill in the spaces at the bottom edge between the 3 pieces. This gave me essentially a 1/4 circle. I then took some old material and cut 4 pieces and sewed them together. Naturally, I got a circle-shaped piece. Then, by moulding this piece on top of a ball that was 37 cm in circumference, and pinning out the excess fabric and adding a band of fabric around I achieved my goal. I cut the mock-up hat in 4 pieces and traced the shape onto cardboard, including the band extension. It worked like a charm. My hat came out perfect. I would love to send you a photo.

Was there a reason you started at 7 when laying out the grid for the end branch?
@compasslayoutsАй бұрын
Hmmm, no reason at all. Guess I was trying to go in numerical order but that's not how I started the base anyways. You can start either way. This video was too long my eyes were everywhere and so Maybe I was trying to help my brain reach the last stretch of the video. A lil off the subject but I kid you not, I was playing with a square to pentagon transition and was able to get one made. Hopefully I'll post in a few weeks as im on vacation. This was from a post you made a while back.

Do you like using a 3.5" diameter because of how close the pi formula gets you to exactly 11?
@compasslayoutsАй бұрын
Yes and no. It is convenient to use that number also because I know it will fit on video but not too small where it forces me to close the compass too much that you won't be able to make out the lines. There are other videos that the measurement won't land me to the exact inch number but rather a 1/16 of an inch like say 9 in 7/16 length from a 3in pie.

Firstly amazing tutorial but I have one question. Do you know of a convenient way to "transfer" the scribe lines from layout to your working material? I got the layout all right but going from that to making the pieces is my current struggle.
@compasslayouts4 ай бұрын
Hey @xximstupid great question...so pretty simple. Once your layout is done, I put that paper on top of the material your going to cut it out of...I'm assuming aluminum or steel sheet and use a center punch on every corner of the template and then connect the dots. It's a great way to do it on paper then transfer to the material because you can position the template and get as much out of a sheet Hope that made sence..hmmm.. I may do a quick shorts on how the transfer looks like but yea..use a center punch or something you can prick every corner with something like a nail and a lite tap with a hammer.

Does this still work it the offset is greater than the square
@compasslayouts4 ай бұрын
Yes, even if the circle goes outside the square and it's evenly out up down left or right like an cross position, it should be the same. But once you start putting that circle at an angle like an x , that's what I call extreme offsets and instead of doing (2) true length triangles, you'll have to do (4) true length triangles..one for every corner....hopefully you seen those old videos that are three part videos. Hope that helps.

I learned this from a good friend of mine along with co workers or at least the basics of what was required at work. I have a question in my mind and maybe you have solution,examble you are going to do a eccentric reducer and the measurements is 2 meter on the big dia,1meter on the small diameter with 1.7 meter in height,instead of divider,how you will do it?
@compasslayouts9 ай бұрын
Ooohhh with no divider tool (compass). Wow that's pretty big. Well dor starters, seeing how it's a big cone, I would do it in (2)pcs. I would use the same methods like my video called Round to Round Cone...A faster Way. I would probably use a long pc of 1x4 wood and drill a screw on one end acting as a pivot sharp point and on the other end secure a pen or a sharp object to act as a divider and use that to throw your big radius. So on the 2 meters, what ever that is in total Round length, I would only do half of that so in your case only one meter so that way you have (2) half. I may attempt that in the future to show that there are other ways to make big radius arcs without a compass. So like how I mentioned on the video that I suggested to you, maybe after your done doing the big arc radius, use a string to trace the radius but only after you measured the string of the length you looking for. Hope it kinda makes sense but in the mean time I'll try to prep a video of that problem. Thx @dionisioerwinmontejo
