Once I got to the point of adjusting my valves on a sand rail I recently bought, I have come to find that the clearance was anywhere from .003-.005....

My car has an aftermarket carb. It starts fine and runs well but when I arrive about 7 miles later it is idling very fast. I checked the VW official manual and one of the problems listed was the heater element. It also listed choke valve or fast idle cam sticking. When I look in the engine nothing seems stuck. Would disconnecting the auto choke give me the answer as to the problem and what might I expect with that done? Muir explains how to do this. Still learning - there is only one person able to work on this car and he is quite busy with other things.

I have one of those, too. They go for 10 bucks in Germany every few months. 32 bucks feel steep. I got rid of the burrs. It's not a joy to use but it mostly does the trick. It's just an out of town backup anyway. For ten bucks a piece, sometimes even discounted, they have their uses. Mostly for creating DIY digital readouts. Like measuring the focal points when polishing a telescopic mirror. Or building a model plane where 0.01mm really do not matter. My good analog Meba is only good for 0.05mm. I mostly have cheap measuring stuff. Funny enough, it all kinda agrees with each other over small distances. I'd prefer buying good stuff though.

How is it for dragging brush, harrows, grading blades, etc
@MaineMachinist9 күн бұрын
What I will say is if you’re going to do any real work like that, make sure you get the GT product line and not the LT. the GT “Garden Tractor” designation means larger axles and a stronger drivetrain than the LT “Lawn Tractor” versions.

Hi Maine machinist. I also love my Atlas 7 inch shaper. Its details are very different from your shaper. Design of the ram, power cross feed mechanism, table casting. door casting to the internal mechanism, the entire right side of the main casting, etc. Lots of factories made 7 inch shapers under their own name and I believe many British companies made close copies especially of Atlas products. Most were probably more durable than the Atlas because of the many zemac castings. It might be fun, and another story, for you to fine out who really made your shaper. There are just to many major casting differences for it to be a temporary production expedience for, especially WW2 production.

In my ignorant youth, I always ran 20-50 in my built up 2ltr bug and R100RS, always in warmer (hot) ambient temps, and never had a problem. The Mexican beetle owners manual and the AC Porsche recommendations are telling. Thanks for your research.

*Could this have been reason why my car started running real CRAPPY when I brought it home from the mechanic? Looked at my Choke element and it was DISCONNECTED, i.e., spade lug pulled off. They worked on the carb and obviously forgot to reconnect it. Hot Summer day. Not sure how much ambient Summer heat also factored in...*

The important thing is not "which oil ?" but "is there enough oil left ?" The viscosity depends on the outside temperature only if it is extreme on one side or the other, it depends on the hot engine oil pressure, and the compression ratio. this on an original T1 engine and in more or less good condition, with double oil regulation, original springs and pistons, and functional mobile air flaps.

Everytime I use synthetic in my 2332 turbo air cooled vw, i get leaks at the valve cover gasket using the rubber gasket on the CB performance covers. But this doesn't happen with the Kendall 30sae straight weight. Since the kendall is a pain for me to locate at a reasonable price without a long drive, I'd love to use a 10w-30 synthetic if I could.
