Great video! You explain things really well and good camera work! I switched my front mount 8N to electronic ignition years ago. However, it stopped running a week ago and no spark. I will test the coil today. My question is how often does the ignitor go bad? Being a front mount it is a pain to remove. I hope it is the coil! Thanks!

I learned the hard way with electronic ignition. If you do not use the correct plug wires you will burn out the igniter. I had that happen and since I put on the correct plug wires I have not had an issue. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

@@TheKiltedHomesteader I tested the coil today and it was at 2.9 ohms. I have been using the same plug wires for years. Igniter must be 8 years old or more. Thanks for the video!

I was not aware of the ARK loader. Looks like it works well. The one I was aware of for the 1250 and similar size Bolens was made by Johnson. There are a few still out there, but be prepared to do a major refurb if you want to put one to use.

I have two 1951 8N's and I installed a water temperature gauge in both because I was concerned about overheating - ( your video was helpful ) bot were running at 160 and after using brushhog did not get above 190 - reassuring info to me. Thank You ! I Probably wont do 180 deg thermostat unless a problem with system.

I had my 1951 Ford 8N tractor converted to 12 volts back in the early 90's. The coil does not have internal resistor because it connects to an external resister called the ballast (white ceramic piece screws ro the firewall) that wires connect to from the coil. How do you test resistance to see if the coil is good or bad in my case? Im sure a lot of guys have external resistance coils still on their tractors that may have issues. Thanks for responding back. THUMBS UP!!!

Next week! my truck is being re-geared and an EATON Detroit Truetrac installed. I have been waiting for EATON to release the application for my 2016 F150's 8.8 Super 34-spline rear axle for two years. Thought I was going to have to swap the entire rear axle assembly for a 9.75... just to have a great differential. Like you, I know my 4 X 2 truck's limitations, but even with the open diff it has now I can get to the places in the high desert I like to get to. And out of. The Truetrac will be a boon! to my travels. I cannot tell you how many 4WD folks have told me, "All you need in that truck is a good diff and you'll be going places that a 4 X 4 w/ open diffs won't. You have the tires, you have the ground clearance. You just need better traction on your drive axle." Again - KNOW YOUR VEHICLE'S LIMITATIONS. Do the best you can within those parameters. Carry recovery equipment so you may get unstuck yourself. Carry extra fuel, extra water, food, warm clothing along with tools and perhaps a weapon if that's your thing. Cheers! Thanks for this video, 10 years on! and here's wishing everyone safe travels.

Does the lack of a live or independent PTO on the 8Nmake drilling post holes less safe or more difficult?

Hey @TheKiltedHomesteader , I know it's been a couple years since you did this video, but I do have a question for ya. I saw the other video (by MJM’s Workshop), and it's obvious his temp sending unit is different from the Steiner's kit. He only needed the 1/2" hole, and Steiner's has to have the 3/4" It's always worried me with the larger hole cause it really *really* comes close to the edges of the boss, and I'm afraid that the heat and temp changes could cause the head to crack right around there. So, after two years, have you noticed any issues since installing your temp gauge? Has it held out pretty well?
@TheKiltedHomesteader4 ай бұрын
I have used it a lot in the past two years and I have no issues. I have gotten the engine nice and warm with a hotter thermostat (see my other video) and no cracks. I am tickled with the sending unit. I would do it all over again.

I have a question and have been looking all over for info on 8n ptos and if any were manufactured with live ptos or if a conversion to a live pto would be possible and how difficult it would be. I have an 8n and my brush hog gets stuck in the weeds and the wheels have to spin with the pto so this would be very helpful.
@jean-yveswatts50485 ай бұрын
Hi there the solution to this which I have just tried out is an over running clutch also called over running coupler. it attaches onto the pto and the attachment attaches onto it. It prevents the momentum of the bush hog blades from driving your wheels forward. I hope this helps.

That guy was just walking in the shallow water. Now I understand why this Red Tailed Hawk catches fish, which rarely ever happens except at this river. The fish have nowhere to escape. The hawk knows where they are because they'll always be seen at any distance. To be able to throw any food to a hawk and expect it to grab it is more than just impressive!

Excellent video. I've run these for 55 years and I learned something from you today. If I may say one thing, buying 50/50 antifreeze is probably the biggest waste of money that you could do. Here in canada, it's the same price as concentrate. So I guess what I'm saying is you're paying just as much for half as much:-)

I drilled and tapped my fill plug and added a zerk fitting, then used a air powered aro grease pump and pressure filled the steering box steering box in my '77 Ford 1600 that was leaking out of the shaft seal because the bushing was worn from carrying heavy loads with my loader and trying to steer with mystic g6 industrial waterproof grease that is so slick it's beyond slick, to the point it came out of the top of the steering shaft under the steering wheel, now id say that's pretty full! It's still a little hard to steer but always has been and takes a lot of force and about all you got when you have 1000lbs or more on the loader. But it doesn't leak and id say that packed full it's probably not shoving anything off. And it has a consistency of just a hare more thickness of the corn head and super super tacky. Made for excavators and heavy equipment joints to keep out moisture and stay connected to joints. It's synthetic, and a bit expensive, a 5 gallon bucket for my aro pump was $280 but it will last and I have a lot of equipment.
