As a huge Natalie Merchant fan, I LOVE your version & the narrative you gave to this song! You definitely made me want to get outside & commune with my Motherland (and it's 27°!)❣

Maybe I just miss Hawai'i Nei, but sometimes I need to listen to this song in order to find my center. It seems an odd choice for a haole from Alabama, I guess.

Aloha Keale, Saw you perform at the Slack Festival in Waikiki yesterday. I loved that you used your platform in Waikiki to quietly protest the development of Hawaii. I never thought of Israel Kamakwiwo'ole's songs as protest songs, but I realized yesterday when you played them, they are.

Walt, I love you man. First of all, in the beginning these islands belonged to the Menehune or the people of Mu when the Marquesans arrived on these shores and began to populate these islands and live in harmony (so far as I can understand) with the people of Mu and became the 2nd Hawaiians. Then came the Tahitian 'invasion' which overpowered the gentle folk living here in a peaceful and cooperqtive way. They brought the ali'i system and the heiau system and overtook the land and the culture. They became the 2nd Hawaiians. Then came Kamehameha who took all the land unto himself for the Kingdom of Hawai'i. Thus was begun the Monarcy. Many folk lost their land in that deal as well. Enter: the missionaries and hordes of other western folk from all over the planet who eventually lined up with the U.S. for economic and reason having to do with protection from stronger European nations (Russia, French). So the land has been under different control in different times. Looking to the past makes us blind to the future. We must aloha what is and bring peaceful integration for all who live and love this sacred, beautiful land. It is our only peaceful way forward.

For Preston, Friends and Family: Check this out. Keale, one of my friends from Hawaii days, is in Puyallup. Sorry I didn't know ahead of time to let you know. Keale is nephew of the famous Moe Keale, and cousin of the equally famous "Braddah IZ" Kamakawiwiole. Maybe next year...
