Is it not incredible to hear a vet state that concentrates are required to fully develope any calf,s rumen. How does the calf of any herbivore ruminant in the wild develope a rumen without it. It's mothers milk and nibbling whatever is available. My understanding is that EVERY grain into all ruminants is false feed. It reduces the ph and if you give them too much it will kill them with acidosis. How did generations of farmers anywhere rear calves without doing it the modern way. Those differences should be examined. The push in pharming today is more faster production with all manner of artificial practices like grain feeding, Ai, synthetic fertiliser, slurry another disaster . It's a miracle we have any healthy stock with what is going on and how much GM is in the system which has to be one of the biggest cul de sacs mankind has gone into. Teagasc is about production, not food and are a disastrous hobby organic that has rolled out the wrong model of farming massively at the expense of the ecology and environmental only matched by Coillte with their monocultural deserts.
