The two biggest culprits on poor running with the Ford EEC-IV bank fire system is vacuum leaks and problems with the distributor pip and ignition module..the earlier models had the module with the distributor and that was as problematic as GM's module on the back of the engine with all the exhaust heat. GM had some intermittent issues with distributor bases and Ford had trouble with the pip sensor in the distributor. But if you got a later model like my 92 the ignition module is on the fender well near the ECU and that's not a problem like if you had a GM and you bought some wire, bought a cheap Ford module box, gutted it, used it for a heat sink, and wired the ignition module also over on the fender well away from heat. Pip is just a 20 minute distributor swap and you're done. Pull the cap, make a couple of index marks, unclamp and swap. But I don't blame you for going with the Holley because it's just simpler but with more control. If I could find one cheap I'd do something like that myself. I've researched the heck out of putting a CFI system where the bank fire was and I can actually do it but there's the thing with the cam being slightly different and with no speed shops around here competent enough to figure out a slight cam alteration tuner coding I've just decided not to do it even though I know I'd like it better. Ford never offered it on a truck but I have the setup I saved from a car and they got bad rap because in the era they came people could barely understand carbs let alone speed Density electronic fuel and timing control. So they pulled those when they mainly had issues with the baseplate vacuum, TPS wear because of normal use, and also the square wave duty cycle integrated in Ford EEC-IV and beyond. I'm not a great mechanic. But I can figure everything out and keep something going when everyone else is switching to points and a carburetor. I'm glad you got your system going well. It's rare I find happy people after they buy these systems. I think it's because they don't understand how everything works and start fiddling with stuff they should leave alone.
@electricsmith16505 күн бұрын
I tried to save the factory EFI! I deleted all vacuum lines besides the brake booster and FPR, replaced a few idle parts and gaskets with no luck. I think I either had a vacuum leak in the intake manifold itself or a bad ECU. I'm also not familiar with V8s in the slightest, the only gas V8s I've owned have been brick nose fords. Going to the Sniper I realized how simple and nice small blocks V8s are, I finally understand the hype! I appreciate you sharing all this information though! That's stuff I always have a hard time googling!
@MarcKemp-q6n4 күн бұрын
@electricsmith1650 unless you have a 95 or 96 it's still the same injection as the bank fire they came with starting in late 85 and quite a few 1986. I think the inline 6 and the 460 were the carbed holdouts. 87 on the inline 6 and all 460's by 88. The 95-96 were still the same architecture in place but with the MAF it became a SEFI with EEC-V. So the injectors fired sequentially with the firing order instead of one bank firing and then the other. Neither system at the time was any better except if you lived in town and then bank fire like all TBI injection being continuous doesn't produce the same lower emissions at idle and basically until about 3-4th gear and then it's exactly the same. The bank fire had smaller injectors and fired 4 and 4 and the sequential had larger injectors firing in sequence but by the time you got above 4th gear they were firing all the time anyway so there's not much improvement in emissions at road speed. Actually the most likely culprit on the vacuum leaks were the lower intake and the upper intake gaskets. I don't blame you for doing MS or a sniper or even someone going to a carb and dialing it in. With the aftermarket systems there's more control for those of us who want to get all we can. With a carb, it's simpler but you lose some driveability and obviously emissions of that's important to you. But most people think there's mpg improvement with aftermarket EFI or even factory EFI and that's rarely the case if you're comparing apples to apples functionality including a good carburetor properly tuned in and that's for most people today the proverbial deer in the headlights look. Syntax error. Does not compute. E.T.s bright light, bright light...

The oil cooler on a 7.3 is a filthy job, but the tricky part is making sure you don’t crack the aluminum front cover. I’m not nitpicking but the way you tried it first is the number one way of cracking that cover. I always fully assemble the cooler, put it in as one unit and then torque those bolts down nice and easy. I’ve done dozens of those and never had an issue, but seen guys crack that cover and then it ends up at my shop where I have to slightly lift the cab to pull the engine up enough to get that front cover off…now THATS a nightmare 😂
@electricsmith165024 күн бұрын
Yeah I did hear that was a big no no but the video I watched the guy had luck with it😂 I didn’t put enough force on it for me to worry about cracking it but I could only imagine how bad that could be 😂
@1966oldsguy24 күн бұрын
@@electricsmith1650first off. Much respect for tackling that job. I feel like if you’re going to be a guy that drives an older truck you should know how to work on it for the most part. I think I know the video you’re talking about, and the guy does slide it in with the front third attached. Risky, but I suppose you can get away with it. Noticed you said you were out in vernal. I’m in Utah if you ever get in a bind always happy to walk a guy through some things. I’ve owned 19 OBS fords and definitely missed the boat on all the videos like you do. I’ve built them all the way from the ground up and am doing an engine in my 96 right now and building a 90 F150 for my daughters first truck.

Pretty neat! I haven't had my cherry '91 bronco for even 2 weeks and looking at some major mods and upgrades. But, why a super duty axle and not an obs king-pin dana 60? Out of an F350, should be 110% bolt up, even if you do the reverse spring hanger mod.
@electricsmith1650Ай бұрын
Obs Dana 60 wouldn’t have bolted right up. They are still leaf spring axles. You could definitely go OBS axles but a OBS Dana 60 is rare and expensive cause every f-250 guy wants them. Super duty axles are more available, have a tighter turning radius, a unit bearing hub design and rear disk breaks. PROs and CONs for almost every swap. If you go 05+ super duty axle those are a little easier to swap cause it’s a coil spring design just like the Bronco.
@FrankenTruck29 күн бұрын
@@electricsmith1650 It's been years since I helped on an F-150 conversion, but other than a notch at the front shackle mount and drilling holes to fasten the brackets, No welding or Fab required. But I have fallen down the rabbit hole of SD swaps and I agree it is a much better swap after watching and reading a lot of material.
@electricsmith165015 күн бұрын
The kit has actually come a long way and is now offered as a front bolt on kit instead of a weld on like mine! Another option you could do is run OBS leaf springs with a SD front. The OBS leafs are shorter and don’t poke out as much but the SD leafs are a much better ride.

Stock ECM is still in the truck but has nothing hooked up to it. Not sure what you mean my rabs and ps switch. But if you’re talking about ABS module, mine didn’t have ABS. And if you’re talking about the pressure switch on the power steering I also didn’t have that. When I did my PS pump swap it found out about that switch option. If I remember right it was used for idle control when the A/C system is engaged. The sniper has A/C Tuning on it which I will dive into once I get my A/C functional!
