The reason why limited excels at being a great experience is it's essentially the adverse of commander but with the same goal. It's a competitive format in the sense that deck building and game knowledge is the skills required to do well but it accomplishes these things utilizing all the dogshit cards they print that are truly only powerful in these limited environments and you can make and play really cool really interesting strategies that would never see the light of day in their standard environments just like edh of old sought to accomplish by making bulk rares playable. But to place mtg at the front of outstanding is such a joke. The game has lost it's entire identity completely cannibalising itself through UB and EDH. There's really nothing redeeming about the game and quite frankly it's mechanics are outdated and everything truly is just kicker.

Yeah the Spark starter is the only one worth getting. The Luke and Vader decks have great cards for any deck you'll build, and the starter exclusives are the best here. Shadows and Twilight starters arent worth it as a whole, pick up the cards you want on the aftermarket

Digimon as a whole has always been my preference to Pokemon, even when the TCG was awful. The new card game (that we only recently found out about) finally does the concept justice.

My biggest complaint about yu gi oh is that you can literally sit there and watch someone play their turn for an hour. What they should do is make a core set like with OG cards and then create a rotation like in mtg or Pokemon.. at least in my opinion

I will say this, from my experience, fun decks are generally not competitive, where as competitive decks are not generally fun. Granted I generally have only played a few of these games, so if there is a tcg that changes that rule, I would like to give it a try.

I hate commander. I've been playing since the 90's and commander is far and away the least interesting format for me. Obv to each their own, but with that said MTG was inherently a competitive outlet for me, not a social one. When I want to socialize, I find alcohol (just as an example) to be something that helps me accomplish the task of "socializing". But there is a reason that MTG isn't colloquially called "social lube". Imo MTG is fundamentally DESIGNED to be competitive. If you want social, I have ALWAYS found D&D to be much more helpful. Rather than working AGAINST those you're playing with, you work TOGETHER. Literally a fundamentally more social experience. Again, to each their own, but I do roll my eyes when folks talk up how beneficial a game of commander is to socializing. It feels like window dressing to a scene where people already are socializing at best, without driving the social experience whatsoever. If others have different experiences, that's chill: have fun w/ it but holy cow is it boring to me. If i wanted to casually do something with people to socialize there are about 99,999,999 other things that come to mind first: watch a movie, get food, do drugs, drink, have sex, explore nature, etc. Clearly commander helps ppl get their rox off w/ commander and, again, that's cool, let 'em but dear lord lets stop pretending that it's fundamentally 'better' than standard. Basically commander is fundamentally casual and standard is fundamentally competitive. If magic is fundamentally designed to be competitive, then the gameplay itself will only synergize when the format best matches card design. Just my take

I’ve been really enjoying Kryptik recently, at least at the casual kitchen table level (haven’t delved into the competitive scene yet). It’s like a fresher more streamlined version of magic, and it’s very fun and designed by some cool people, with a lot of input from the community.

As a mostly limited player of Magic, I'd be interested in seeing how you'd rank the limited formats of the TCGs that support it. Also, some of my most played TCGs were all during the '90's boom and mostly followed the IPs I liked: Star Trek (Decipher), Star Wars (Decipher), Overpower, Middle-earth, and Battletech. Have you ever played any of those?

I would also agree that Digimon is very underrated. The resource system is fantastic. My issue is just that Digimon is basically just discount Pokemon. I know some people like it, but it's just not my thing, and that's considering the fact that Pokemon designs haven't even been that good after Gen 2, maybe Gen 3. =/

Android Netrunner is my favourite game of all time. Technically not a TCG (it’s an LCG), but the original was (before it went to FFG then latterly Null Signal Games). Still, it’s great to see it top the list along with FAB which is also an amazing game. A good list for sure.

Of course Digimon is the best Bandai TCG, it's not even debatable. The memory system is far better than the DON system, you can basically choke your opponent at 1 memory if you play decent and they can barely do anything on their turn. Plus, it's more complex than One Piece, having inheritable effects to take into account.

Used to think yugioh was peak gameplay back in the battle city and gx periods. The game was extremely balanced and had more viable decks than you can imagine with fair rules. Now it’s just an infinite turn shit fest. Like you sit down and your opponent bas played 90% of his deck and combos before you even get a turn. Basically it’s in the same scenario magic has found itself in with everyone only playing one deck (mono red aggro) where you win your second turn.

Yo! The tile at the top of your Galaxy Trucker ship is an illegal placement. I hope it was removed before the journey! Best abstracts are Tzaar and Quantum in my book. If you like sci-fi and haven't played Quantum you need to track down a copy! I agree Caverna is amazingly thematic and my favourite Uwe, but a strong disagree that Lords of Waterdeep isn't thematic! I think the intrigue cards have some womderful thematic twists, and if you have players going to the harbour you genuinely feel dread in wondering what they're scheming in the darkest corners of Skullport.

For people only knowing Monopoly, Gigamic Marrakesh is really the best in all events I've lead: simple rules, closed economy with money exchange, some screw you moment and a simple area control - That gives all the parameters people are comfortable with through Monopoly in a very good (and tactile) game
