Thank you, I too have played around with compensation mostly due to my playing style and age.

Nut slot cut! Now your talking! I cut my nut slots so that intonation is very close at the first fret after intonating the 12th fret fist. Then I use my tuner to check each string per its slot as i notch each slot for the 1st fret. ! You are the 1st person I have seen on the internet. To me the upper frets, above the 12th, are not a factor.

Which value are the Volume pots, 250k/ 300k/ 500k on the 3 pickup Epiphone? A master vol with 1 x 1000pf should do the Whole Guitar. Live fron Switch into a 500k pot and from the wiper on to the output socket( the ground to the pot shell and on to the jack instead of just swich straight to the output jack. There is a way of wiring a low value cap to the selector switch..Take switch out and try output wired to input? Just thought.

I was seaching so much for more technical documentation on what affects the intonation. This is very good material!

I have a bass with two volume and two tone controls. It has to be independent since there is no selector switch. But If I understand this video, independent wiring is really only a problem because of the switch position. Right?

Thankyou very much for this Vid. I'm an aging Kiwi hobby luthier. Youve answered a number of questions, that I've had in my mind for quite some time. Interesting that some luthiers and some people when they tune their guitars. Are extremely dogmatic about what is correct and not. Over a period of time, I've come to realise, that it's all actually a big compromise. If people choose to be pedantic. Stringed instruments and particularly guitars, intonation, doesn't actually work out. We do our best.

I have an intermittent ringing noise I can't find. It's the guitar, imo. Moved pickups from 1 guitar to another and it didn't follow the pickups. Not sure where to go at this point.

Sorry, but wouldn’t the rule of 18 make notes more FLAT, not sharp as you go up the fretboard, compared to 17.817? Because you’re dividing by 18, which is larger than 17.817, your calculated distances will all be a little smaller, positioning your frets closer to the nut than what 17.817 would yield.
@michigannatureandwildlife68963 ай бұрын
Good question. If the saddle position were kept the same, yes, rule of 18 would deliver notes consistently more flat than 17.817 along the entire board. If we assume that saddle position were adjusted respectively for proper intonation at the 12th fret octave however, then there will be a very slight flattening curve between frets 1-11, but progressively increased sharpening as you move above the 12th.
@jhneilson3 ай бұрын
@@michigannatureandwildlife6896 Ahh, okay, that makes sense! I suppose rule of 18 vs 17.817 would be fairly negligible once you look at all the other factors influencing intonation.

What is that slide metal rod tool you used in this video called? Beats having to unwire the strings where the guitar's circle is for an illiterate person to. I've just watched several KZbin videos showing you how to drill a hole there to insert a point cork screw which to me is not ideal solution in the long run where this type of screw will cause that hole wood surface to crack or broken resulting from guitar strap pulling pressure.

Nice Tut. This will come in really handy installing a pickup in an f-hole Gypsy guitar. The long drill bit won't go into the f-hole on mine, but a stiff coat-hanger will. Thanks.

Great video! Learned something!! Three suggestions: 1) a 1/4 wood dowel won't scratch or damage any wood or metal parts like a metal rod. 2) Using a piece of coat hanger wire bent to a small "L" at one end takes a lot of trial & error out of determining the inner nut position through the end block. Use a piece of masking tape to mark the end block thickness and transfer this distance to the jack nuts. 3) Use a tiny (and I mean tiny!) bit of wood glue on the inner & outer nut threads to lock them in place. Wood glue acts like LocTite; but is less aggressive. However, too much will nearly act like a weld!

5:20 I have a Mexican Martin OM (cheap but serviceable) with this problem. The sensor is in between the E & B....like the E/A and D/G in the video. And the E string isn't nearly as loud as the B. The B can be very dominant....especially when playing hard. I have to alter my playing to compensate. I am going to try to slice off the sensor and re-glue it back under the E string like in this video. But I'm afraid I'll ruin it. This is supposed to be the cheap backup guitar, but even so, the lower volume high E string is driving me nuts.

So officially ? Whats the +/ - cents value of error thats acceptable? Whats the 1 st fret/ clearance holding the stringdown at second fret for electric and acoustic nylon and then steel. Are they all the same? Neck relief for each? String height will be subjective to user…im guessing and will have some influence
