I think the nonsensical nature and "how does this even work"-ness of the original design gave it some mystery. Because if you can't understand how something works how are you supposed to stop it? Personally I would have avoided the power source, because that looks like a weak point.

To be fair, that's because Old Birds are _metacontextual_ "tanks" - like how we equate people like Blitzcrank, Pudge, and Reinhardt (all of these three being CHONKY lads in our favorite games that can take "yes" amounts of damage) and are also individuals who walk on their own two legs. We're not saying they're tanks with legs - we're basically making a metaphor for how absurdly durable and dangerous they are. After all, you don't want to piss off a tank when you're in its range.

I recently worked on blender and, even if it's very different from Maya about the shortcuts and manipulation, i got used to it in a matter of a week time. Yhe old bird by itself is pretty intereseting, but i found it way too simple (even if he looks pretty well detailed compared to other ennemies). And what really bothers me with this creature, it's the crying baby sound it makes. The upgrades you made for it is very solid. As a moddeler artist, i approve.
