Illegal to remove the cats, Virginia will fail it on a yearly safety inspection if I do. Smog is unhooked and so is the EGR, but the EGR is part of the carburetor base plate so it's harder to delete.

The 302 V8 is just as reliable as any Chevy or Dodge. The AOD transmission is better than the 200R4 GM used and worlds better than the A904 Dodge used. I bought it knowing the fuel injection was messed up but also knowing how to fix it. They built nearly 2 million of these cars, they aren't that bad.
@johnclyne6350
@johnclyne6350 19 күн бұрын
@ I know the 302 very well. That’s what was in my 1988 Ford Bronco XLT. That truck was a dog with fleas. Believe it or not they had 3 different engines for that year. A straight six that had zero balls. The 302 which was also balless. The next was the 351. I heard that was the engine to get in that truck. For it to pull hills you needed that engine with a stick. Mine was an automatic. To climb a hill with the A/C on I had to turn off the A/C. At 68,000 miles I lost compression as I was pulling into my driveway on my way back from out of state. I had it flat bedded to a garage. They said I had 3 options. Junk the truck at 11 years old. Replace the engine or replace the rod & main bearings & a new oil pump. I did option 3. That cost me $1500. I started it up & got full pressure. Drove to the gas station & refilled the tank & drove home. As soon as I pulled in the driveway the oil pressure dropped to zero. I then had to replace the engine. I went for a brand new engine installed. I went with a pre-oiler with high pressure hydraulic hoses. All custom made to fit. I relocated the oil filter so it was easier to get at. I added an engine oil cooler & a tranny oil cooler. I went for my lungs. I upgraded to Bosche injectors instead of Motorcraft. I started it up & had great oil pressure. I took it out on the highway. Still no balls. After all that. It still was a dog with fleas. I kept the truck for 6 more years & sold it at a loss.

@@johnclyne6350 No V8 made good power in the 80's, It was 150-180HP and that was it. Chevy, Ford, and Dodge were all dogs in the 70's and 80's, no avoiding that. I don't know what you did to that 302, but I've never seen one fail like that. You can trash talk Ford all you want but I'm saving all the old American iron I can because it doesn't matter if it's Ford, GM, or Mopar, it's all going away and we should all be fighting that rather than sticking to the old "Ford is junk!", "Chevy is junk!", "Dodge is junk!" nonsense and arguing with each other. Everything except their pickup trucks that GM makes now is junk, everything that Stellantis (Formerly Chrysler) makes is junk, and don't get me started on modern Fords. But the old stuff I'm gonna save.

@ I bought my Ford Bronco used at 4 years old from a Ford dealer. It had low miles at 31,000 miles. It looked great too. I did my homework. Mind you this was just before "car fax" was available. I had a mechanic check it out. He found a lot of small issues needing attention. I told the dealer I wanted these small things fixed before I bought it. I asked how long it would take their service department to fix all the issues? They suggested three weeks? I called on the date for me to pick it up & they said it was ready? Upon arrival about half the issues I brought up were never fixed? I got it in writing that they would fix the other issues post purchase (turned out the letter of intent was never fully implemented). This was my first interaction with a Ford dealer. I was underwhelmed. At the suggestion of others I bought the engine & transmission drive train warranty for $250. Within 11 months the transfer case exploded on the highway & took out the transmission. I took my truck to another Ford dealer for repairs because the first one screwed me. I had to hire an attorney to sue Ford because Ford hadn't any records of my warranty purchase? Turned out the first dealer pocketed the money on the transfer of the power train warranty. Ford corporate made good on the contract after contacting their zone manager. 12 weeks later I only had to pay my co-payment & additional repairs ($800). Ford never offered me a loaner? I had to rent a truck because I don't fit in cars-I'm freakishly large. I was out thousands of dollars because Ford couldn't do the right thing despite my proof that a dealer scammed me twice. So, yeah. I have a chip on my shoulder for Ford. I think you would agree if you were treated like that too.

Just did my '93. The pins instead of bolts are a poor design and a pain. Spray with brake cleaner before beginning. Then with WD 40 around the pins. The fine brake dust is very toxic wear gloves and a mask. A punch of the correct size will knock the pins out, not vise grips or a screw driver. They will punch out toward the truck. Actually they will punch out either direction. Put an old brake pad across the cylinder and press them in with the C clamp. It's a good idea to repack the bearings while rebuilding brakes. Also remove the cap on the master cylinder. That way when the cylinder is compressed you will not leak fluid or put too much pressure on the brake lines. I'm sure he is a good old boy shade tree mechanic, but hope these suggestions help a newbie. Pads are not difficult with a little forthought. The old style shoes with all the springs and levers are an invention of the devil.
