1st step, avoid defender then 2nd step land on BOTH feet then bounce off the ground with BOTH feet (pro hop), legal? Or travel?
Gathering of the ball isn't when you just touch the ball. It's when you touch the ball with 2 hands (most of the time)

the pointed out gather step is wrong because he hasn't had full control of the ball yet, the control starts when two hands touch the ball of when the ball over the hand.

This gathering step rule has f#cked up the game for all real aka old school players. In that 1st video the man clearly has ball under control with one hand as it is marked step 0. This extra step should never have been aloved. Game was lovely before the change, now its a joke. Bunch of Softies wearing tight pants in their spare time. I am disgusted.

0:47 Rule 25.2.1 A player who catches the ball while he is progressing, or upon completion of a dribble, may take two steps in coming to a stop, passing or shooting the ball: ▬ If, after receiving the ball, a player shall release the ball to start his dribble before his second step. I don't like this rule actually.

Even if the gather step rule had been in effect at Rio16, i think the first one would have still been travel. Ok, the pivot foot is one step later, but you still aren't allowed to lift your pivot foot before starting your dribble, right? (Which he clearly does)
@Dick_LongJJ Жыл бұрын
NO. you are quoting the wrong rule. It is a separate rule within 25.2 If you are both feet on the ground, catching the ball then you are right If we are moving and catching the ball, we are to release it before our second step. Notice that, it this case, that traveling will not be looking if you are lifting a foot but taking a step.
@wat4504 Жыл бұрын
That only applies when you're pivoting
@Zwerggoldhamster2 жыл бұрын
Maybe I'll look up the rules changes tomorrow, but how I'm seeing it, they are both travels. I always like the elegance of travel rules in BB as for example opposed to handball. You might say "you can take two steps", but actually there is a neat system underneath it: one foot can move, while the other can't. If you lift the 'anchored' foot, the other one cannot move anymore. If you land an anchored foot, it is travel. No need to actually count steps.
@weksauce2 жыл бұрын
This is correct. There are NO steps legal after pivot is established. In every league but the NBA, once the pivot foot leaves the ground, the ball must be released into a shot, dribble, or pass before ANY body part touches the floor again. Also, most leagues explicitly require beginning a dribble BEFORE lifting the pivot foot.
@RobinXlone2 жыл бұрын
@@weksauce that’s a lie the step through is legal at every level even high school. The travel is based on the pivot foot returning to the ground thats it. Meaning it can be picked up and another step can be taken u have to release the ball before the pivot returns back
@RobinXlone2 жыл бұрын
No that’s not how it works the pivot foot can move. It can be picked up. A travel is only based upon the pivot foot landing on the ground after being picked up. If u release the ball after it’s picked up then it’s no travel. Also gotta remember a pivot foot can only be established after the ball is gathered
@weksauce2 жыл бұрын
@@RobinXlone Quote the NFHS or NCAA rule that allows for jumping/hopping from pivot foot, to other foot, to shot/pass. It doesn't exist. The rules are written such that once the pivot foot leaves the ground, NO PART OF THE PLAYER may touch the ground before shot/pass leaves the hands. That includes the non-pivot foot. The NBA is different. It went from pivot foot, to "player may take as many steps as necessary to come to a stop before pivot foot is established", to "two steps", to current iteration: 0th/"gather" step plus two steps, plus (don't know if this is explicitly written still) no calling travelling unless an advantage is gained. That's why step backs have 3 steps now at the NBA level, and why they never call the travels that happen about 80% of the time a player receives a pass above the 3pt line. They don't use the travel to gain an advantage, so let the game continue and everyone make money.
@weksauce2 жыл бұрын
@UCa_ZUKm-mJHD55qxeQvk1AQ Here's NFHS, the governing body of almost all American high school basketball: RT. 3 . . . After coming to a stop and establishing a pivot foot: a. The pivot foot may be lifted, but not returned to the floor, before the ball is released on a pass or try for goal. b. If the player jumps, neither foot may be returned to the floor before the ball is released on a pass or try for goal. (b doesn't explicitly state any body part, but it's implicit. Can't land on your hands, knees, ass, and then keep walking/sliding after jumping from a pivot foot.)
