Norton produced a 750cc short stroke commando road bike ! As far as I know of the 200 that were made I only know of one in existence. All the others had the engines removed and replaced with standard 850cc engines. The short stroke was an 850 fitted with a short throw crank, steel connecting rods, domed pistons and a much modified head that had a more severe hemi combustion chamber !

Great footage, what a KICK to be able to do that, thanks so much for sharing. (old timer here, got my first Norton in 1970 when I was released from the Navy)

I opened up an abandoned storage space the other day and found 2 Norton 850 commandos. Both had been crashed.. but there are lots of parts. One says Johnny Player special on it.. I hope I can get them back together.

IIRC, there was a triple engine Norton at the bike drag nationals in Bowling Green, Kentucky in the late ‘70s. Sounded and looked awesome. Still got stomped by the Japanese bikes.

I'm interested on what the top end (speed) of your bike is. I had a 1968 P11A that I bought used as a teen ager and was surprised how much faster it was than my friends' motorcycles. I believe the motor was stock although it had Dunstall mufflers installed. If the speedometer read correctly, it was still pulling at 105 mph and that was with a friend on the seat behind me. I grew up in West Vancouver, British Columbia and we would race from there to Squamish at night. If you're familiar with the 'Sea to Sky' highway you know how twisty it was but my Norton with the featherbed frame left everyone else in my dust.

Looks like fun. What were the rules for the motor? Must be original? I saw Ronnie Peterson and Mario Andretti race there in 77 I think and also the 6 wheeled Elf Tyrells.

In 1968 my Norton P11A was leaving every other street legal motorcycle in my rear view mirror. Back in high school my school chums and I would rat-race from West Vancouver to Squamish, B.C. , one of the windiest highways in the world back then. I'd be finishing my beer by the time the first of them pulled up.

The sound of that motor combined with the wind and a little road noise takes me back to my youth. It was 1970 and I had just bough a 1968 P11A. Several of my friends owned motorcycles and we would rat race from West Vancouver to Squamish, B.C. along the Sea to Sky Highway. It was 50 miles of the twistiest, nastiest, cliff on one side, mountain on the other narrow, dangerous, fun highway built for motorcycles in the world back then. As the Japanese multis became popular some of them could beat me in an out and out drag race but I'd leave them in the dust in the corners with my Norton!

When visiting the museum a couple times around 15 years ago, I imagined ripping around that track on one of my old Nortons, this video will have to suffice... I did get to rip through the Colorado Rockies, back 25 to over 50 years ago when the traffic was MUCH less...Loved the Beemer, too, have an old R90S... What a hell of a way and time to get a leg broken...Thank you for all your effort in filming and sharing, it's a real treat for us "older gentlemen" who "can't".

It was 1971, I was 17 years old and I had just bought a used 1968 Norton P11A Ranger. I kept it completely stock except to add velocity stacks to the carbs, Dunstall pipes, and Avon Roadmaster tires. Man! I was King of the Highway where I lived, situated in the middle of several twisty mountain highways. The first CB750 and H1 were starting to show up and although they gave me a run for the money in the straights I left them in the dust in the corners. The Featherbed frame was a delight to ride with no vices and I soon found out why they put folding foot-pegs on the Norton as I had no problem rubbing them in the corners.
