We haven't yet started raising goats or sheep. For a long time we thought we'd do goats, but ultimately have decided on sheep. Goats being tricky with fencing is just one reason. I'm looking at a triple purpose sheep- meat, milk, & wool- probably Icelandic. We're up at 7000' in the Rockies so we have extremes of cold and sun, and Icelandic seem like they'll do well here. This traditionally was a sheep raising area (it's now mostly grass-fed cattle). I'm also pleased to know they will eat willow because we have tons of it in our river valley and is annoyingly persistent where unwanted. I strongly considered Alpaca as well, partially because I adore their fine soft wool, and some do raise them here and they do well (it's kind of like the Andes here), but I've since learned how susceptible to parasites etc they are, and that sounds like a terrible plan for a self sustaining homestead, so I've decided to pass on alpaca.

Thank you for sharing your farm. I am in high desert of Southern Calif on 3-acre little homestead. Got our chickens and garden going and we raise meat chicken when needed. I want to plant some foliage for ground cover and very soon like to get a meat cow and pigs. Try to arrange enough foliage to support cattle for grazing so not to buy too much feed and grain. Thanks for explaining how you plan pads. Think you said break into 5ths for 3 cattle for 48 hours? Been in touch with couple seed companies to help with work in my area. Thanks for the inspiration; like you said use what I have see what I get. God will provide the rest.

We have three acres and we have a garden and 32 chickens. We can not have any other meat or dairy options on my land. So next year, my plan is to plant native fruit barring bushes/trees. So we can increase our output of fresh fruits and vegetables. My idea of having native plants to my area is to limit the amount of upkeep on the trees and bushes, as they are native and used to the weather. What do you think?
