I’ve been a welder fabricator for over 40 years, and I’m 63 years old now and my knees hurt so bad that I can’t work now and I am passing up more money than ever before. I can get basically what I want. I only started wearing knee pads the last couple years but it was too late. When the old timers tell you to get help picking up something heavy, do it. They tell you from experience how many of their buddies ruined their bodies thinking they can do it themselves. I’m a witness because I use to throw 4x8 sheets of 10 gauge steel from the ground to the shears by myself. When someone couldn’t break a truck lug nut, I had to be the guy who proved I could do it. I kick myself in the ass for not listening to men that were only looking out for me telling me what will happen later in life. Gloves eye and ear protection is so important. I was very lucky for how much I couldn’t be bothered. But I know people who weren’t so lucky. True facts guys. I’m getting ready to have my knees done so I can get some more of that money that’s out there waiting for me. Couple good years of putting it away and it will help make my last few years even better financially. PPE YOUNG MEN. ✌️🇺🇸👍

It is breathable and also water resistant, but it is not waterproof. GAF specifically warns against using it for temporary weather protection. If water gets under the shingles, only ice & water shield will help since it is self-sealing. All other underlayments are penetrated by thousands of nails, and every penetration can leak. Asphalt felt is both waterproof and breathable. It does degrade over many years but no underlayment will save your roof if the shingles or penetrations are leaking. The most you can hope for is reducing intrusions during blowoffs.

Pro roofer tip here. Sawzal on a very hot day and eyeball 1/2 inch off edge! Accepting $$'s for pro tips.
@confuse36718 ай бұрын
Not a pro here - I have an old, trash circular saw and used that. Put a nice clean edge on the roof. I did use a chalk line because I don't trust the old mark 1 eyeball.

Dont you need a 1/4 inch space between the shingles and the wall for expansion?

Do you use regular razor blade or hook blade? Are those 3 tab shingles or would that be a laminate shingles?

Maybe a drip and good quality, but so install it! The base of the roof (osb or plywood) will rot. You forgot the underlay or bitumen the edge of the plywood. Bad Roofers.
@johanna.browne Жыл бұрын
that would really only be an issue if they were in a climate that got snow filling up the gutters and/or creating Ice damns. With the ply being installed 1" back from the fascia for air intake, or dropping the facia 3/4", then the drip edge 3/4" past the Facia and the shingles 1 1/4" past the drip edge, to comply with local building codes' it'll be fine. This is the way it's been done in Australia and New Zealand for over 30 years with no issues. We don't have soffit vent Eave sheets here and don't want them, they're ugly. Everyone who's a professional Shingler knows coating the ply edge with bitumen traps moisture inside the ply and it's a dumb idea that leads to dryrot

All mesh styles of ridge vent are sub standard products and anyone installing it is doing it because it is inexpensive. If your roofer is selling ridge vent that doesn't have a wind baffle on both sides avoid them.
@aaronb49362 жыл бұрын
@larry crookshanks was considering getting this ridge vent on my roof due to concerns of bats/mice getting in. Is there a better product for airflow and to keep bats out that you recommend?

@steveinsbrook24792 жыл бұрын
No Plastic cap nails? You used staples. Doesn't that void the warranty?
@joeblow5973 жыл бұрын
Most houses in the U.S. have shingles as homeowners associations and local laws won't allow any other roof. Sure their cheaper than tiles to install but you see them being replaced from ten years up so it works out dearer, add to that the way they look deteriorates much much faster than tiles so it's false economy.
@prodig16283 жыл бұрын
Start the bottom as straight as possible follow that shingle keep a 5 5/8 difference in your pattern all the way up the lowest point and your bleeder will run a half inch away straight up and down the valley which ever point is higher ,waste of material the way he's doing it if you start the valley and work your way out you follow the papers lines not too hard yes push down in the middle don't listen to that comment

Premium installers in the U.S. won't use a nail gun as it causes problems with the shingles later on.

I hear you. Ten years ago I had my nephew and his friend and me and a buddy of mine put a new roof on. My nephew and his buddy are both union roofers and I had problems for the first few years of wind grabbing the shingles going up the ridge. Both ridges. So I had to pick them up and put them back. When the other side happened I went over the whole edges with black tar in the big tubes. And a few more nails here and there. I was disappointed in him because he always bragging about how much side money he makes. It is what it is.
