Enjoyed your hiking adventures in the Wichita Mtn. Wildlife Refuge. I visited recently with my wife and we hiked some of the trails, not the ones you've shown, and explored on my gravel bike the Mt. Scott fire road trail and other places open to bikes. Felt like a cowboy making my way across the old wild west, especially with the bison and prairie dogs. Like you've mentioned, a unique area that's truly worth exploring with lots of pristine lakes.

Oklahoma has some beautiful spots if you know where to look, but nothing quite on the scale of this. The Adirondacks really have a wow factor.

That bushwhacking up Quanah Creek looked like Type II fun. All that rock hopping, creek crossings, and wading through tall grass and brush makes 3 miles feel like 12. Have you hiked up the Elk Mountain trail? There are a lot interesting rock features on top with a couple small arches and rock rooms.

To borrow a word from a different language, it took real chutzpah for you to do this hike. I am impressed! The wild turkeys were a lovely little bonus.

Very nice. Is there any linguistic etymological tie between the words ouachita and witchita?
@T.K...21 күн бұрын
They both derive from the names of native tribes but the Wichita's lived further North and West as you would expect given the place names.
@cimarronwoo20 күн бұрын
The names come from different sources. “Wichita" is named after the native American peoples from the southern plains. "Ouachita" is the French spelling of the Caddo (from eastern Oklahoma) word "washita", meaning "good hunting grounds”.

@@OklahomoHiker that is an awesome spot! I didn’t notice the arch on my way in, but I stopped at that campsite for a snack on my trek back out and saw it. That would be fun!

Colorado would be the closest thing with anything like this. Oklahoma is beautiful, but it doesn’t have any mountains that come even close to being as tall as the ones in this video.

Do you recall where you parked to access the lake? I have a kayak and hope to do this sometime in the near future. I saw another video where someone camped at a free Army Corps of Engineers location on the far west end of the lake and then paddled out to some islands.

I parked at the Buckville Recreation Area Campground on the north side of the lake. It’s free first come, first serve camping there.

Great memories of climbing Elk Mtn with family members. My brother and I climbed one day in the snow, came around a bend and a HUGE elk was just standing there looking at us. He was snow covered. One of those perfect moments. 👍🏻

Is this hike kid friendly? What would you rate this trail from beginner to professional? Me and wife live in oklahoma and been wanting to take our 5 year old for a hike
@OklahomoHikerАй бұрын
This one would not be great for a five year old. It’s quite a bit of elevation gain and some boulder hopping. I might suggests walking to Forty-Foot Hole (which I have a video for) or Little Baldy and see how it goes before going for something more rigorous.
