@@Sergio.GonzalezPrats because i think it would be cool and unique to play, also i can replicate bagpipes because i can’t afford bagpipes and i love the sound but i don’t want to disturb anyone in my house with a loud highland pipe chanter that gets as loud as a chainsaw sometimes, i know a hurdy gurdy doesn’t sound like bagpipes exactly but they sound very close to each other with a little violin and cello mixed in, also this guy made a keyless one from an old drawer and it sounded similar to a taggleharpa or a crwth but with a softer sound

Hi. I have 2 questions, don't know if you'll be able to answer. But 1/ The instrument is made to play keys with your right hand, how was it possible did you ask this to the seller? 2/ What's the difference between the Nurdy-Gurdy and the Hurdy-Gurdy?
@Sergio.GonzalezPrats20 күн бұрын
1- No, you play the keys with your left hand 2- nurdy gurdy is nothing, nerdy gurdy is the brand of this instrument that I show on the video, like saying Fender or Yamaha A hurdy gurdy is a type of instrument, like saying guitar or piano
@tm2bow65320 күн бұрын
@Sergio.GonzalezPrats Thanks a lot. In the video you seem to play keys with your right hand. But it must be because of the camera.

I purchased a gurdy from what I think is the only american luthier still in operation a little over a year and a half ago. Have to admit I love the thing, I have learned a LOT about tuning and maintaining a gurdy from it. unfortunately the only thing I can play so far is amazing grace, Life got in the way (new job and a few other things) Just returned to your videos to start back to learning more, especially since I have a Saphonia that should be ready shortly. I wanna make the best Gurdies :o)
@Crotaro3 ай бұрын
I'm conflicted about it because, on the one hand, we need more people who make gurdies. So, more manufacturers is always a good thing. But on the other hand, you don't want a low-quality sounding instrument and the first couple instruments of a new manufacturer are probably not going to sound the best they could ever be since they are a new manufacturer. But the manufacturer also needs to make money so that they can keep making instruments. So they need to sell gurdies to make the money or they need to already be rich and accept not making money for a couple of years and have dozens or hundreds of not-so-good-sounding gurdies lying around.
@Sergio.GonzalezPrats3 ай бұрын
I fully understand your point and I agree!
@Crotaro3 ай бұрын
Maybe they could advertise it specifically as a beginner gurdy?
@Sergio.GonzalezPrats3 ай бұрын
@Crotaro the problem is that this is not even a beginner gurdy, a beginners instrument has to be trouble free, like the Trigo by MM, this is basically unplayable for a beginner

Your videos have been (and will continue) to be a great help. I've got an order in with Claire dugue, but her waiting list is 4½ years, so to stop me getting too impatient.... I've just managed to get an order in for a nerdy gurdy kit. I decided the kit as well as being the cheaper option, I'd gain a much better understanding of a gurdy by building one. Can't wait.
@stupidhandles4 ай бұрын
I've ordered from Claire, because she's the only gurdy luthier in the UK (with any reputation) She seems well regarded, and as I understand has won awards for her gurdies, while being a little on the pricey side, because I'm in the UK. I'd have to pay vat and duty to import one, so that means an extra £200 per £1000 of cost and delivery combined (ppl often dint realise we vat and duty is paid in the shipping cost as well as the item cost) so buying a sophonia from mm would be € 3600, with a soft case which us required for all shipped gurdies plus €350 shipping, I'd be paying over €800 in taxes alone making it at least €4800. The soundfile examples on Claire's website are the best sounding gurdies soundfiles I've heard in my research.

I am building one of his Nyckel-harps too but the Nerdy Gurdy has to come first as we are invited to midsummer party and I want to bring the new instrument if I can finish it in time. Is it possible to super-saturate the liquid rosin? (ie. dissolve more rosin into the alcohol than it can normally hold.) I had read that a hot water bath would speed up the dissolve. So I added my pulverized rosin and the alcohol into a bottle, then put the bottle in a pan of hot water. It worked great, and it was all dissolved very quickly. But, after letting it cool down to room temperature, there was undissolved rosin at the bottom of the bottle and it clogged up the pipette. I heated it up again, and again, it went into a beautiful liquid. But cooled down, not so beautiful. Think I need to thin out my mixture!

It's unfortunate that these instruments are so expensive, but I think a silver lining of that at least for me, was that it took a long time for me to decide that I want one and to commit to getting one, a lot of money was on the line so I felt like I had to do as much research as I possibly could to find a good instrument, and I did. For a little while I thought that I would get an altarwind but I put in the research and discovered that they are not worth the money. This isn't meant to be judgmental to anyone else for how they live their life or how they think, but for how much these instruments cost, it's strange to me that anyone would spend little enough time looking into them and put in little enough research that they would ever get to duped into buying a poorly made instrument like this one. Maybe a lot of people buying them it just have a lot of spare disposable money on hand, so it's not as big of a deal to them and they spend less time and thought on deciding what they want, but I think it's pretty likely that most people buying hurdy gurdies, whether they settle for something like this or get a real instrument that doesn't even cost that much more money, or could even be cheaper, are regular people who are needing to spend quite a big chunk of money on it and they need to save up and it's a big commitment for them

I live only 15km away from this museum, and only a few months ago I realized that this exhibition even exists. During the visit, I played a bit on that "try me" gurdy, and a decision was made that day: I had to get such an instrument for myself. I ordered a Nerdy Gurdy, and it's been 4 months since I started playing on it. I'm not a musician so it will take me some time to learn, but this is perhaps one of the most enjoyable hobbies I ever picked up. Most of the text on the wall is referring to gurdies from Eastern Europe (Ukraine, eastern parts of Poland, but not only) from the 19th century. Back then this instrument was an attribute of a wandering bard, usually blind, who could see the future and who would tell stories (or sing) about dark events that await us, while playing dreadful tunes on his gurdy. Such wandering bards were beggars, yet they were held in high respect in villages and the countryside. Many of those paintings are portraying them in similar manner - wind in their hair, unsettling and mystic atmosphere, worried people listening to them. Quite fascinating. If anyone needs translation of those wall texts, I can do that here in the comments. Cheers
