In Europe is forbidden to pull and brake at the same time. Interesting.

Why did you get out of the 2nd train to start it? Train turned red and you did something but nothing in the video showed anything.

These videos are the best I've found for running Run 8, and I suspect the principles taught also work in the other train sims. I'll watch this one several times until I have it down pat. 😀

I'm just a layman here, so take whatever I say with a heavy dose of salt. I've re-watched this video several times to see what was different between attempt number 1 and attempt number 2. In the first attempt, the train really struggled to get moving, and it broke in two at nearly the exact moment the amps on the lead unit exceeded 1500 Amps. Do you Engineers use the current draw as a gage for how much forces are being exerted on the train? The second attempt was successful, so what was different? The narrator doesn't say that the train was any lighter, but it did pull away with much less effort. The only thing that I could see was different was that the flow rate in the break-pipe was lower. Could it have been that a few of the cars had dragging breaks in the first attempt? Again, I'm just a layman with zero knowledge of trains, but I did find this video very informative and entertaining.

If you use that rear dup it would help you incredibly. I work the real thing on the Mountain in the Sierras and if the Dup is idled out it is working against you in the idea that it isn't helping braking and the whole wait of the cut ins or rear is against you as well. There are a lot of times you could have avoided air and kept your train under control with the rear at Brake 2 or 3 or even 4

Thanks again Chris! I was about to get started at MP 150 on the Roseville sub, and wanted to know whether I was required to do another brake test. Well, your excellent video not only refreshed my mind on how to do a brake test, but answered my question(s) as well. I was also wanting to know whether, IRL, someone was required to walk the entire train to check each brake cylinder. You answered that question early in your video. I believe that one day, railroads will have technology to check each and every aspect of an entire train by running an app on a smartphone. No more walking the train. When the cost of manufacture and sale of such devices reaches the point where it's financially advantageous to install the systems. I could go on for hours; I'll post to the Chit-Chat forum. ET

I've seen a few methods about how to bring a train down hill. Is it ok to leave the brakes on the whole time down the decent? I've see other videos where you do the saw tooth method so the brakes don't heat up and melt. I'm not from the railway industry just want someone to shine the light on if this is true? Also do you use full dynamics anytime? I'm playing on tsw3

Ran on old B&A of present CSX, Conrail when I was running, née NYCentral. Never had any class room instruction, just one trip with road foreman. No instruction on anything. Taught myself to use dynamic brake. Always used throttle gently. Never touched the auto air without a minimal air reduction while using some throttle to kept train stretched so to avoid run ins. Never had a problem, never got a knuckle. All learning was on the job. Watching the engineers do it. Took a buyout. Did not want to make more than one Selkirk-Boston round trip per week. Super did not like it. 😢

Ex- TS20XX / TSW3 veteran and Run8 V3 noob for 2 weeks here. So much more to learn and do with Run8. Love it and this very informative video. Tried to start from a dead stop with a 9500 ton train, 4 ES44's on the front, 2 on the back, 2% grade somewhere on the Mojave Sub. I could not succeed without using the "Fence". I had to keep the DPU two notches ahead of the lead and then "cheat" by watching the "Coupler kLBs" on the HUD. When that dropped to around 270 - 280, I'd advance both Lead / DPU throttles by a notch until both were in notch 8. Nice . . . never would have given any thought to the guys in back pushing harder than the guys in front pulling. Kudos to the Run8 "Devs" and Depot Community.

I'm a bit unclear as to the reasons you would use dynamics instead of air, or air instead of dynamics. I watched your video on mountainous terrain, so I know how to employ both: but I still don't understand what goes into the choice to use one, or more of one, than the other.
@joy_01092 жыл бұрын
You first have to understand what differentiates Dynamic from Air brake. You send current to a DC motor and it spins. Inversely a 'free spinning' DC motor generates electricity. The generation of electricity slows down the motor. (The faster the motor spins - the more electricity it generates - the more braking power is created) But as the motor slows down, it generates less electricity and in turn less braking force. So this kind of braking loses effectiveness as the train start slowing down. It can slow the train down but can never fully stop it. This is Dynamic brake. Now air brake is simple, brake pads push onto the wheels to slow them with friction. But air brakes are slow and they also need to recharge after each use. Dynamic is very good where you need to keep the speed in check but don't wanna fully stop the train, like coming down a grade. Whereas air brake is for situations when the dynamic brake is not effective/sufficient. That said, I'm not an expert in trains, there might be some inaccuracies in my explanation. But I hope I was able to help you a little bit.
