Flexibility makes a huge difference in preventing injuries and helps a lot with other open guards.My teachers, Renzo Gracie isn't flexible and Rodrigo Gracie isn't flexible at all. Matt Serra is super flexible, so is Royce, Rickson, and Royler. So is flexibility important? Yes. Do you need it? No. Does it help? Yes. ;) I don't have good flexibility but I have great Jiujitsu. Do I wish I had better flexibility? Yes. That would of helped prevent a ton of injuries. Eddie Bravo makes his students stretch a lot.
@AlienWebguy5 жыл бұрын
Flexibility is also important for injury prevention. Athletes should still stretch and work on mobility while they use techniques like this video to learn their BJJ game in the meantime. Definitely a supplement vs a replacement.

But lets not forget that becoming flexible over time is an option and why the fuck not just do that? lol
@amechiakpom19216 жыл бұрын
Great point that becoming flexible over time is the best bet IMHO. But in the meantime, these strategies can help you compete until you make those mobility improvements.

i just started at 10th planet and im not flexible at all. its tough.
@Bjjtrainingjournal7 жыл бұрын
Is flexibility a prerequisite to advancing in the 10th Planet system? Or can you get good in the system and just avoid rubber guard? I know that the system has expanded quite a bit since it first became popular.

Very good course, thank you a lot. I visualize BJJ as a game, I like very much the idea that it is a human body chess game so my reason of training is to get at a certain level when I can read my opponent's game 2-3 moves ahead and will actually start playing it. This is also the reason I love the technics that attack 2 body parts, like triangle choke+ armbar , crucifix armbar and choke and so on, it looks so much similar to chess
@ssdrug7 жыл бұрын
Favorite action is crucifix armbar from the back, opponnent's reaction may be turning the hand or sliding down. if he simply turned the hand i will try a straight choke, if slided down ill pretend attacking kimura but will actually try ketching his head with my legs

Hey Dr jits, nice video as always but how would you approach this escape with strikes involved?
@Bjjtrainingjournal8 жыл бұрын
Hi Cross! Good call on the strikes. Instead of explaining, I'll have a few folks show you what I mean. First, check out Firas Zahabi at 7min 25sec. He specifically talkes about when strikes are involved. bjjtrainingjournal.com/grapplers/videos/view/763/powerful-bjj-mount-escape-tunnel-escape-firas-zahabi Next, check out Denis Kang shows Stephan Kesting. At 2min 20sec they talk about striking here. bjjtrainingjournal.com/grapplers/videos/view/765/the-simplest-mount-escape-for-bjj-and-mma And lastly, my friend Henry Akins has a whole video about punch defense from the mount. bjjtrainingjournal.com/grapplers/videos/view/764/brazilian-jiu-jitsu-in-los-angeles-mount-escape-and-punch-defense-with I hope that this helps! -Amechi

You can be a blackbelt that is very unsuccessful at the black belt level (competing against other black belts), that doesn't mean you are not successful at jiu jitsu. Not everyone trains martial arts to win tournaments.

"You don't need speed, you don't need strength, and you don't need flexibility." Uh, yes you do, you ABSOLUTELY do. Speaking as someone who has trained since 2002, you need all 3 just not Mr. Olympian levels but do NOT believe that you can get by without those physical attributes because you will soon find out its bullshit.
@wut20978 жыл бұрын
+voxman77 You don't understand what jiu jitsu is. The idea some random Internet shitposter knows more about what jiu jitsu requires than a legendary Rickson black belt is why KZbin comments should be outlawed.
@voxman778 жыл бұрын
"KZbin comments should be outlawed" says the totalitarian (likely from CA). Are you HONESTLY unable to even hear a counter-opinion? You are that hurt?

+voxman77 Yeh I don't agree with you either. I have none of those attributes and I can still hold my own most of the time during open mat even against a real athlete.
@SuperMerlot8 жыл бұрын
I was surprised too by his statement. My guess is that he is trying to market BJJ to larger audiences. I realised I needed to do extra flexibility exercises daily the very first day I was on the mat; especially on my knees. The same as with my cardio and strength.
@interpreter9118 жыл бұрын
Biggest takeaway(s): 1. I need to build a system. 2. A system is the foundation and the moves are the bricks. 3. Finally some structure to learning BJJ.

if they've got their head glued to mat (as they feel your hand enter the lapel), how do you get your leg underneath?
@Bjjtrainingjournal9 жыл бұрын
+Keith Myers -- Hi Keith! If they are pinning their head down, then you don't need to get your leg underneath. Just feed your grip to their far lapel, get a deep grip, and move your leg only enough for you to choke them with your leg still on your opponent's forehead. So it will be like a bread cutter choke but your leg is keeping them from trying to sit up when you move your leg from over their face. That is the way that my Nino Schembri does it. -Amechi
