The takeaway here is to pay off your home and major debt by 50yrs old. No later than 55. As an older EE you have a target on your back. Especially in corporate America. Pay off your home, build up to one year of emergency savings and then throw everything towards your retirement accounts. Be prepared. Your day WILL come.

It would be great if you gave some links for products you mention. Sometimes Amazon will allow you to provide a link and you get a small kickback if someone buys the product you suggest, using that link. I've been thinking about getting a selfie stick for my dog training videos. HAPPY, LOL!

I always think that you cannot force people to hire you, but being older myself, I know how disheartening it can be. I have been in IT since I came out of school, first 20 years in the Netherlands and now another 27 in Canada. It is all I know, which is not true of course, but as an older worker I also want to mentor and help with my legacy. I felt so sad that I got fired, I would have taken a pay-cut, not because I was not worth what they were paying me, but I would have worked 32 or 28 hours or whatnot. To be kicked by the wayside is the worst thing, and I have grieved about it for a few weeks, really feeling sad and depressed. One interviewer asked me to put on my camera because they wanted to see me, never heard back from them, just rude. I understand the company I was at would not hold on to my services as I was in the maximum of my pay bracket. I have not enabled my CPP but I will most like do that next year. It is not much, especially since I have not been here all my life. We'll see. Thanks for taking me through my old city (I lived there from 2005-2008) and worked in Nisku.

In July, we went on vacation to a cottage we rent. On July 22nd, I went back to work, also a Monday, and I was called into a virtual meeting. As soon as I showed up, I knew I was being fired. And I also knew why. The company had been up for sale, and they tried to skim the pressure on the books. My position was no longer available as we had been migrating the services to cloud providers. Next week I am turning 63, and I am seriously thinking of retiring. I have the same experience with ageism, because I am trained and have stacks of paper showing my skills, and I have been in the IT business for over 45 years. I live near Toronto and there are thousands of jobs on the net, none have gotten back to me. The past months have been a blessing, Martin. I would still advise you to go speak with a lawyer regarding that smudge on your career. My blessings are that I have savings and RRSP. EI was no issue for me, I am covered to March 2025. I do apply for jobs, but am not really thinking that anything will happen. I have also started my consulting company and reaching out for short contracts. We will see how it goes. Uber and all delivery services are covered by the mafia here, no way they let anyone in, fine by me - lol What we have done is that my severance package will be the first to go, and we are living off of that, plus my wife has a little job where she works 26 hours a week. We have significant savings through our RRSP and will be changing that over to RIFF. We have been spending frugally, we are doing okay. I had a nice cup of coffee with you, know you are not alone and hope you have a financial advisor you can draw on? Mine came with my investments and she is fantastic. No, I am not making 10k a month anymore, but the stress has completely disappeared from my life.

I worked for the city of Albuquerque for nine years and in those nine years, I endured every single abuse you can think of. At the end of my ninth year I decided to switch jobs and that’s exactly what I did. I went to work for the county.. opportunity came up for me to apply for a higher position with much higher pay, enjoying that time I discovered that the city of Albuquerque manager decided to wipe out all my certifications and not pay the dues while I was working for the City and had lied to me that I had-certification and that everything was going to her instead of my email. The biggest mistake was for me to trust her. I thought people change. i’m still with the county still doing the same thing. I do make four dollars less than I should’ve if I had my certification and at this point I have seven years to retire. I’m just gonna let it ride and in the meantime, I am going to form a business of consulting in the same field. Let’s see how that goes. I wanted to take legal action against the City, but the lawyer told me the statue of limitation is passed. It’s just like getting into an accident with the Car. You have two years to file that lawsuit I was way past the two years, unfortunately working-class really don’t have any legal recourse or rights.

I was a stay at Home mom with no money in my IRA or any savings of my own, which was scary at 53 years of age. Three years ago I got a part time job and save everything I make. After 3 years, I am 56 yo and have put $9,000 in an IRA and $40,000 in my portfolio with CFA, Evelyn Infurna. Since the goal of getting a job was to invest for retirement and NOT up my lifestyle, I was able to scale this quickly to $150,000. If I can do this in a year, anyone can.

You have a very valuable skill - physical training coach. Many years ago, I broke my leg, and it took me a couple years to recover. I later learned that issue with declining health was sedentary lifestyle and poor diet, assuming that this may be common in tech and finance field. later, I had a physical fitness coach, who designed a diet, assisted me with strength training. I am now very mobile and free from having to take medication. There is a demand for your physical training coach skills.

My brother was fired recently. Being 58, functionally illiterate, no marketable skills, he is actually doing ok. He has a house that is paid in full, and rents out the individual 6 rooms at $500 monthly each. If he did not have that asset. he and wife would be homeless. As mentioned, he has no skills and mildly dim-witted. But fortune smiled on him

Loyalty went out the door 30 years ago...maybe longer. I stress to my kids (currently in the work force) that's it's not about being nice, having fun, or being loyal). They are not operating a charity or feel-good workplace. They are there to make profits & increase the value for the shareholders (if a public company). Anything else is window dressing. The minute you stop generating income or proving to be profitable or a burden on those same profits...you're gone.

Some people I guess do not have the luxury of being able to save enough for whatever reasons. 64 now, haven't taken my SS yet, going to wait till 70 for that. I really do not need it. Best of luck to those who struggle to pay their bills. I would highly suggest making sure before you hit 60 to be totally debt free.

My husband was lured by a firm after 21 years at his job, the money was better, and he had been burned out for the past 5-6 years, so this sounded great. He went from a rather large company to a much smaller one. This all started January 2024, he was paid off in November, for exactly the same reason, it’s BS, but to add to my husband experiencing ageism he is also dealing with Cerebral Palsy since birth. He will get past the phone or video interview, but once they see his handicap that requires the use of forearm crutches he gets they “we are going in another direction” rejection letter. I too am physically unwell so I can only work a few hours every other day, requiring a recovery day in between. We are in a crisis situation, I don’t know how we will qualify for any type of support here in the states, as you know, billions of dollars have been given away to undocumented immigrants, there is nothing left for Americans. Sure we can apply for disability, that would bring in around $1,300 a month if we both qualify. Because I haven’t worked much since 2015 due to my medical crisis, I will not be approved, no one is approved when they first apply, there have to be appeals. We will probably lose our house, I want to go ahead and sell it, we have done equity, and then buy an RV travel trailer to live in, we have family with land that we can park it on, even though it’s 2 hours from the next metropolitan area. He works in the wealth management sector so we have to be close to a big city, even when working remotely, I’m praying for you!
