I'm a newbie turner, I watch everything of yours Steve on repeat. I strongly recommend for beginners trying to learn from your technique to tap the video, settings, playback speed and watch this video at a quarter speed, it's so helpful for us amateurs. I treated myself to an Ashley Iles 1 1/4 inch skew today and find it so much easier to use than my Sorby 3/4 inch, maybe the rounded edges?

I just started a turning course and I am being told you lay the skew flat on the rest not angled.
@woodturner219 күн бұрын
You only lay flat on the rest for a peeling cut, for a planing cut only the front edge is on the tool rest. Obviously cutting beads the tool is rolled over. If the tool is flat on the tool rest then you are scraping this is not how to use a skew efficiently.

When I started turning, about thirty years ago, I was advised to buy a 2.4m length of pine, cut it into 30cm lengths and lock myself into the workshop using the skew until it was all used up. It worked. Practice is the key, make mistakes, don’t expect perfection, develop your own style and keep the bevel rubbing. I adopted Garry Rance’s round skew and found it suited me well, but also used an oval skew for heavy work like Newel posts etc. The steel of the tools is harder than the tool rest and the round and oval skews are a little more gentle on the tool rest, in my opinion.
@woodturner21Ай бұрын
@@mergrew0110 it’s all personal choice but I dislike the oval skew. The round skew is excellent. However my skew comes as standard with the long edges rounded over so is just as easy on the tool rest

I just read that your lathe runs with a loose flat belt that slips off when something was caught in the spindle. Would it be possible for you to demonstrate that on camera, or at least show the belt and explain this safety feature? Modern lathes don’t have that, they’d be spinning on forever. Your Wadkin RS 10 seems to be a safer machine in that regard.

Amazing, wonderful skill. My first lessons (years ago) were with Mick Hanbury, who encouraged us beginners to just spend 10 minutes ‘getting your eye in’ with a few beads and coves at the beginning of each workshop visit. Great advice - and this “simple” test can be added to that list of ‘getting your eye in’ with the skew. Thanks.
