Chang was 30, it’s not like he was that old. I was a Chang fan, Chang and Kricksrein, the underdogs. Chang was so obviously outgunned in this match. He had a weak serve, and his backhand had no penetration. He was a base-liner who fought wars of attrition, but he felt he had to approach the net against Federer, not a good sign. Federer wasn’t playing even near his best.

@fed-rafa-fan5666Күн бұрын
Clerc is of course an excellent player, but this set was very poor play from him, he was pretty missing every single shot, even relatively straightforward ones. Maybe he had given up or was not ok physically (seemed ok though), but there was no real fight from him here and Edberg just walked all over this set.

"Edberg who ironically beat him in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Juniors..." What? How do you beat someone "ironically"?? Does that mean he LOOKED like he beat him but really didn't? Looks like the announcer doesn't know the difference between "ironic" and "coincidental."

I remember watching this match on TV as it happened back in 1985. Super cool stuff. I think some people forget just how good of a player Clerc was- French Open semifinals in 81’ and 82.’ He beat John McEnroe in Davis Cup singles twice and almost beat him in 1981 in the Davis Cup finals which would have won the 81’ championship for Argentina.

A female umpire for a men' s match?! That was rare in 1985. Also no net judge? Did they already have the Electronic device back then? I would love to see pictures of the Edberg vs. Krickstein 1st round US Open match one day.
@rsb512Күн бұрын
I'm can't believe I'm watching this this is a couple months before Stefan won the Australian Open beating lindell 97 in the 5th set in the semis and then I'm pretty sure he destroyed Mats in the final. If they kept the Australian Open on grass Edberg could have won four or five oz titles easy. As a big edberg fan from the mid 80s I remember he had an incredible La finals with Paul anaconda in 1985 I think he lost that match and that killed me. But was worse was a 1988 when Krickstein beat him at the US Open in a crazy match where the people were rowdy and the wind was blowing and debris was going all over the court. That was terrible for Stefan coming off the amazing Wimbledon title.
@MultiStar83Күн бұрын
@@rsb512 Yes, his first Australian Open title was just a few months after this match. But I have never seen pictures of his 1983 US Open first round loss against Aaron Krickstein. Edberg was just 17 and Krickstein 16 years of age. Edberg would go on and win the US Open junior's competition and therefore the "Grand Slam" in juniors in 1983. But he also "killed" a linesperson in that tournament! He was hit by a service of Edberg, fell on the ground and he would never awake from his coma...
@hannesgaming2671Күн бұрын
@@MultiStar83 that is a myth, that linesperson tried to dodge Edbergs serve and fell on his head in the process. It had nothing to do with Stefan's service hitting him.

@@hannesgaming2671 "Richard Wertheim (c. 1923-September 15, 1983) was an American tennis linesman who suffered a fatal injury on September 10, 1983, during a match at the 1983 US Open.[1] He was injured when Stefan Edberg sent an errant serve directly into his groin.[2] Wertheim was sitting in a chair and officiating at the center line. The blow knocked him backwards and he fell out of the chair onto the hardcourt surface, striking his head.[3] He had a history of chronic cardiovascular disease having had a heart attack and stroke at age 40 years.[4] Wertheim was unconscious when he was taken to Flushing Hospital Medical Center. He died on September 15.[5] His family sued the United States Tennis Association for $2.25 million.[6] In an opinion suggesting that the impact of the tennis ball had not been the proximate cause of his death, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of New York reversed a $165,000 jury award to his estate.[4] Following this event, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) refrained from having linesmen sitting during plays." So nice to see Mr and Mrs Austin in the stands. Their love for Tracy is palpable. Mrs Austin applauds even when Virginia hits a great shot, applauding Tracy’s effort. Can tell how proud Mr Austin is, he’s proud of Tracy whether she wins the points or not. Both so delighted when Tracy wins, in an admiring way for Tracy. It’s obvious that the parents drive and intelligence were passed on to Tracy. Tracy saw a way to win this difficult trying set.Tracy is a great problem solver, whenever she loses two points in a row Tracy changes her strategy like a battle worn warrior. Can see the champion in Tracy, so impressed by her performance here in this second set. If any one wonders how tough she was they should watch this set.
