The texts of the first 3 of the 4 songs are poems by one of my favorite authors, Hermann Hesse.

The da capo with its admirable ornements and variations in the pure baroque tradition is just mind-blowing.

Hmm, I dislike this more and more. Her smart financial decisions are because of Onassis? Not because of her?

I love this because Debussy put emphesis on what he *wanted* emphasis on in his message. There are parts where there are certain specific notes getting the melody, which tell the story ESPECIALLY in the rolls. And its GENIUS to do the rolls so quickly because it makes shooting star type feel BUT the speed and the rolls ARENT the melody so we don't need to hear them specifically. They are soft, you can hear that, but they are also soft and quickly move by as the melody, (often the right hand or heavier notes) tells the beautiful story of such an amazing scenery that words are not supposed to describe. Even in the beginning, its so uncertain and tense, yet we get a BUILD of *certainty* which is calming and puts so much ease to mind. Debussy is a genius, he doesn't just give an interpretation of his music, he *shares* his STORIES. I just wish we had all the original recordings of everything, there's only so few because audio recording abilities only started becoming a thing around the time Debussy was finishing his work on earth.

Merci Maria

OH MY GWAD, she has been my vocal lighthouse since I first heard her in 1975 on a live radio broadcast. I was struck dumb, I knew nothing about her previously, had never seen her photo. English does not have enough words to describe her voice. She could sing the phone book and one would think it was wonderful. And her stage presence was impeccable, her size not withstanding...... DANG. Her Isolde was sadly never recorded complete. the Strauss Four Last Songs are to DIE FOR. She even makes Schoenberg's Ewartung sound melodious. Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle is unforgettable. And her FASHION sense was outstanding. GAWD !!!! She looks like the Empress of the WORLD !!! NOTHING LIKE HER WILL EVER APPEAR AGAIN !!!! NOTHING !!!!!! You're right about Dido's Lament, I just want to crawl in a hole and DIE !!!! Perhaps she wasn't human, but a siren escaped from Greek mythology.....

They were after her from the get go starting with the introduction talking about her “tantrums” throwing things etc. also bringing up personal problems illness cancellations and divorce. Then the the rude attack questions. You would think she was on the witness stand being cross examined. The lovely talented lady deserved better.

hummm...interesting recording...however, his tempi is odd....some passages very slow,bit dragging..then after mad / loud very fast stuff...however...listen to this version: Romeo und Julia ∙ hr-Sinfonieorchester ∙ Andrés Orozco-Estrada...its my best found version...though..funny? Karajan= 22 min/and Estrada's version=25 min..go figure?

Sadly, I came here because I heard a story an Auschwitz survivor told where she was forced to be in the camp orchestra. Doctor Mengele came into their barracks and asked her to play it on her cello. She said she played it as fast as she could so he’d leave.
