Hi! This concerns the Dyanaudio Emit-speakers especially Emit 20. Dont know if Youve seen the very thourough measurements a guy did on this Emit speakers. If this is anywhere the same for the rest of the Emits its very bad. I have had the Emit 20:s and when you listen to for ex. classical piano there is a "shine" to the higer register thats very annoying. Maybee thats why som KZbin testers prefered the much, much cheaper Dali Zensor 3. At that time.

It’s worth pointing out that Dynaudio have the best speaker measurement facility in the world so I wouldn’t be worried about that aspect of any of their speakers performance. I would be more worried about the person who shares the information kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6LbdYBtnsR0jpYsi=lABukZe5zXcAEw_A

Great topic. Started on this route myself a couple of years ago. Modern do it all (almost), Hegel and a 24 year old pre and power amp combo (upgraded/serviced). Still run both. Look forward to next installment.
@Benvos9 сағат бұрын
One of the big reasons I’m looking at one day moving up to pre/power, is the ability to run into a crossover so the signal can be distributed between the mains and subs with full volume control. I understand you can have volume control for subs with either a pre-out or using RELs preferred connection, but the full frequency range is still going to the main speakers.

Good video Terry. Not an easy subject as you have identified. With the speakers he had already tried I would initially have identified issues may have centred around his amplification and front end. An example of Pink Floyds Pulse concert which I have on vinyl, CD and DVD, The vinyl through a MC cartridge into a Tom Evans Groove phono stage sounded like being there, DVD and CDthrough various DAC's over the years failed to give that sound until my latest DAC upgrade which closes the gap to the vinyl. Your suggestion of auditioning at shows and shops is definitely the best way forward as then something will click and give direction,

You can only suggest what components work well with each other from a technical point. Usually matching the combination of any amps power output to any speakers sensitivity is the crux or main concern when buying. There are so many bad setups that are based purely on the visual aspect of a components design. Also, the size of the room or speaker placement for the main focal point in a room. Have you explained any of this in your video? I didn't notice if you explained to the questioner that a "live concert recording" is exactly just that. The only way you can mimic a live recording is by processing the signal path. This can be achieved with an AV amp that has several concert hall sound algorithms, amps such as my Yamaha. This means that you will be adding reverberation and echo to the reproduction The purpose of a good quality HIFI set up is to reproduce the original signal as accurately as possible. This added reverberation is just the sort of problem that any discerning audiophile will be trying to eliminate. There is no single speaker on the market that will alter the sound character of any recording to achieve what the questioner requires, you should know this fact, but there are amplifiers and DJ effect toys on the market that will. So really the question is nonsensical . On the other hand the questioner might want want a 1000 watt PA system and not a HIFI set up.

in the 80's I built a pair of large cabinet speakers with 18" sub, 15" bass, 8"mid, horn loaded compression drivers, all RCF and JBL professional drivers used for concert sound. I did all the cabinet in high grade marine plywood at the MIT woodworking laboratory in Cambridge. the 4 way passive crossover was designed by an audio engineer. I put them on caster wheels to move them around. I used them for live music and music listening for 35 years!!! the amps were initially a Soundcraftsmen then Yamaha P3500 pro amp. in the early 2000s I had the room calibrated and used Behringer DSP to fine tune the frequency response. Speaking of Live Concert sound I had it for countless years.

A good active crossed over PA SYSTEM, and it will cost less than the domestic consumer audiophile toys. or Klipsch La Scala/Khorn/Jubilee (Jubilee is a bargain at its price), considering Khorns last 50 years across father son generations, these are cheap

@@PursuitPerfectSystem That is good to know as I was considering these (out of curiosity) despite owning the Linton's. I do like the Linton's, especially for taming bright CDs but sometimes they are perhaps a little too mellow. It is so source dependant though. To be clear I have no intention of getting rid of the Linton's.

Really nice suggestions and considerations. But I can't help thinking that one do well in consider the whole audio chain. The system that I have heard in normal listening environment is the old version Snell speakers e.g Snell J/2 and E/2 driven by tube like Audio Note or Audioinnovations amps with a very modest analog source (Systemdek/Goldring). I am still chasing that sound. I think Devore speakers develop on this concept with e.g. Mcintosh amps. But then the budget is blown I think.

Tower designs are based on decades old JBL line arrays. Comb filtering can be canceled by alternating a driver with a passive radiator in line. No current speaker manufacturers are using standing wave calculations for box design. Etc. 🤔

How is he going to to achieve 'live concert sound' performance when he might well be listening to studio recorded music and not concert recorded music ? Great quality source equipment and high grade amplifiers makes even modest speakers sing in a fairly convincing way.

Great video discussion. Through my journey I’ve come to the conclusion that the Preamp may be the most important piece of gear in a high end reference system other than the speakers. The preamp is critical to how the system works together. I had a high end McIntosh preamp that also had a phono stage, DAC, etc. I use all external pieces that have true balanced design. So I moved on to a BAT line stage only tube preamp and the sound quality was dramatically improved. I like the simplicity of the preamp being line stage only. Also, the BAT had numerous true balanced inputs.
@PursuitPerfectSystemКүн бұрын
I have been looking at the BAT offerings that are intriguing as they have a different type of design
@jeffreythurston1822Күн бұрын
@ I have my BAT feeding a D’Agostino S350 power amp powering the new Wilson WATT/Puppy speakers. Moving from the McIntosh to the BAT was a huge upgrade. The soundstage seriously improved and the midrange tonality is so special. The BAT has slightly less drive than the Mac and slightly less bass but the tonality and detail of the bass is much improved. I think the preamp is the special sauce in a high end system and my advice is always to have as little extra in the preamp as possible. In your case you can do that as your phono stage and DAC are external. I’ll be excited to see what you come up with.

Thanks, good stuff. Its been at least 30 years since I last played vinyl (too busy and too cluttered) but I want to give it a go again. All my kit used to be considered good so I should just need to set it all up again. Troble is I've forgotten most of the ritual! I think I would prefer cleaning and antistaticing on the turn table as I would be affraid I might drop the record. I think Your testing looks really good but I have a few questions. What does static sound like? That sounds like a daft question perhaps but it is so easy to go down a rabbit hole. Have you tried standing an air ioniser near the turntable to see if that makes a difference? I went straight to Amazon but the ultrasonic stylus cleaner is "out of stock and we don't..." I think some of my records, lying dormant in their sleeves all this time may be mucky, I have heard of fungas growth (though I don'y know if mine might have any). Have you reviewed the wet cleaning technique at all?

Is he open to trying a subwoofer? Even if he has tower speakers, a subwoofer brings a lot to the table. Also, if the live recording sounds too centered,he can try to reverse the phase. It might give more room filling sound.

Nice broad selection of speakers for that "live" sound. From the speakers I have heard, Klipsch Heritage including the Heresy iV, Forte iV and Cornwall all are very dynamic and impactful- Cornwall being the ultimate (that I have heard), (subwoofer not required with these) I also thought the mention of trying a multi-channel presentation is a good idea as I sometimes run my AV Receiver NAD T 763 in one of the multi-channel modes and attenuate the center to approx. same volume as mains. Missing was much mention of amp types- but probably a rabbit hole due it's own dedicated video.

As always terry, another great video. How do you define a live concert sound? An outdoor pop concert will be very different to an indoor heavy rock concert. How about a choir in a cathedral with great acoustics? Or a small jazz combo in a smaller venue? They will all have different requirements. And that's before you get into the recording, balance, engineering or your own acoustics. Impossible question really.
