Sadly that's my max depth with anything overhead. I'm not that mobile of a guy. Shoulders and ankles don't let me squat that low with weight overhead.

You do yourself an injustice. Those are power snatches. Can’t you get lower? Your ankle flexibility looks ok.

Yeah any lifters with a raised heel feel great. They'll help a lot for pressing overhead and any squatting pattern.

Hey! I'm an aspiring powerlifter from the Philippines. Watching you squat 405lbs x 3 reps is very inspiring. I've only been doing powerlifting for about a year. Personally, I can only do 325lbs x 1 rep. Do you have any tips for beginners? Keep up the good work!
@JohnWL Жыл бұрын
If you're pretty early on working hard and staying consistent is top priority. After you've used up all your linear progression get on a good program. Stronger by Science has some great free ones.

I feel like you may need to do more hanging variations for the snatch because u almost use no upper body during the third pull which is actually supposed to be the fastest transition of the whole movement.

In 2nd pull, all you want to do is rotate the butt down as the knees rebend under the bar. This will allow you to keep working the bar back so when you're at position 1 (the power position) the bar is over your heels. And to get to a quicker rack position when receiving, just think about getting the shrug to catch and it'll be there quicker

It's a local gym in Minneapolis that has quite a few franchises now. Some of their locations are super nice for weightlifting. Others, not so much.

@JohnWL I lost 3 to 4 weeks of training when the bar slipped and I couldn't let the bar go fast enough to not hyper rotate my shoulder, I'm glad nothing ridiculous happened like a subscapularis tear.

How much single leg work are you doing? Looks like the bar is getting some some consistent counter clockwise twist. Can't really tell if you are having shoulder drop. Good lifts though.

Did you heavy front squat before snatch? Also, it could be my imagination but it seems as though you are slamming the breaks above the full squat position as the weight goes up instead of continuing to ride it down. Don't know if it's intentional as there are world class weightlifters who compete using the power snatch.
@JohnWL Жыл бұрын
I did front squat first. I wouldn't call a single set of 3 at 85% particularly heavy. My full depth in the snatch is hip crease just below the top of the knees.
@drhjhulsebos Жыл бұрын
@JohnWL Yeah, that shouldn't be overtly heavy, I just have a hard time wrapping my mind around using it as something to prime my snatch, but if it works, it works. I refuse to push-press without doing fronts first, there's definitely something to be said about front racking a heavier weight prior to dip and drive. It does seem like you could get more depth and that you were actively working for it at that second rep of the last set at 170. Both of my kids hover an inch above the ground in an ATG, makes me curse. 😒

Double bounce those squats!
@JohnWL Жыл бұрын
What do you mean?
@drhjhulsebos Жыл бұрын
@JohnWL get your initial deep squat position then raise a few inches and drop down into an even deeper squat. There's videos on it. Basically sending a massive signal to the golgi tendon organs to give you a more forceful contraction. It also helps with coordinating the leg drive and trunk stabilization for your jerk.
@bigbendstrength Жыл бұрын
@@drhjhulsebosThe double bounce is a lats ditch effort for weightlifters if the timing is off for a clean. Practicing the double bounce on a heavy front squat isn’t necessary unless it’s much lighter and it’s something the athlete needs more of. Most of the time weightlifters need to practice the single bounce without letting the chest fall forward
@drhjhulsebos Жыл бұрын
@bigbendstrength Last ditch? Maybe in competition like Vardanyan (who's c&j was only 10kg lighter than his max fs. it will increase mobility (more space to catch), core stability (power transfer), and will increase leg drive for pressing, in addition to heightened stretch reflex (motor recruitment). If you have another way of this lifter improving on these elements particularly mobility (which is probably robbing his snatch by at least 15kg) in a time efficient manner, definitely share. If you can't double bounce every rep of your max triple, you've hit the genetic lottery of fast twitch if you can clean it.
@JohnWL Жыл бұрын
@@drhjhulsebos thanks for the tips! Considering I've never missed a clean, or even came close to missing a clean, coming out of the receiving position I don't think I'll need to practice double bouncing out of the hole to increase my clean. Mobility on the other hand is something I am always working on. Shoulders are the real big issue at the moment. Can't keep the bar in the correct spot overhead in the snatch and jerk. Also indicative of this is that my push press is 90% of my jerk.
