Hey man amazing work, I have a question for you. In the past, I owned a Lyra-8 and Microcosm combo for a while. I was using them in a DAW-less setup, so there was no audio interface or MIDI clock for the Microcosm. I was never able to make it sound good-it always sounded faint and in the background, like a whisper, with very little phase delay impact. How do you make the Microcosm sound so impactful? Is it because you're doing something in a DAW?
@FalseFate66615 минут бұрын
Hey, thanks for the message. I replicated your set-up and I had a similar result to you, which makes me think it might be a gain staging issue. By using a DAW, you'll have more control over the dynamics - tools like gain, EQ, compression and saturation will make a difference to your sound and give you that impact you're looking for. Hope that helps!

Absolutely awesome mate. I have the same gear (with the Nightsky not set up yet) and oh boy this gets my fingers itching. Funny story, I bought my Lyra-8 secondhand, and the patch I got out of it when testing it out when buying was the best I ever got out of it. Still chasing it 😂.

This is Awsome! Can you break down the signal chain from the Lyra to microcosm to Big Sky?
@FalseFate6662 ай бұрын
Hey, for sure. The Lyra is going into Ableton. It goes through a compressor, an EQ removes the harsh frequencies, and then a limiter at the end of the chain tames those wild volume spikes the Lyra can sometimes produce. The signal is then sent out of Ableton into the Microcosm, into the Nightsky, then back into Ableton for just a touch more compression and EQ. Hope that helps!

Hey, amazing stuff bro! I have a few questions…im new to hardware and I’m looking to build quite the same setup than you have here, do you send everything to a mixer ? Do you have a drum machine as a clock ? (I’ve read online drum machines are essentials ?), and what’s the audio interface you’re using here ?
@FalseFate6663 ай бұрын
Hi, I plug everything into a Focusrite Scarlett, which then sends it all to Ableton. I use Ableton as my mixer and to make EQ and compression adjustments. If you don’t want to use a laptop, you can use a standalone mixer instead. As for a drum machine, that’s up to you! If you want to add drums or other samples, it’s a great idea. I don’t use one in this set up, nor do I worry about a clock with improvised drones like this. Hope that helps!

mighty tasteful! may I ask about the sound design of those swells that feel ancient? they seem very natural and diverse - which I have a hard time emulating in my ambient pad game
@FalseFate6663 ай бұрын
Hey, for sure. To achieve the ambient swells, I quickly sweep though the wave shape of the Lyra from a sine wave to a more harsh saw tooth and back to the sine wave. With some EQ, compression and processing through a Valhalla Super Massive reverb, it can result in a big, wide ambient pad sound. Hope that helps!

Awesome playing, dude! How did you connect everything to the interface? I'm more curios on how you can play the Lyra and manipulate that sound with the Microcosm :)
@FalseFate6663 ай бұрын
Thanks for the message! I'll try my best to answer your question about the set up. The Lyra is going into Ableton via one of the Scarlett's inputs. In Ableton I tidy up the signal with some EQ and compression - the Lyra's dynamics can be pretty wild so I find it helps keep them in check. Then, I send it to the Microcosm via the Scarlett's outputs, before bringing it back into Ableton via different inputs on the Scarlett. The last step in Ableton is to put it through the Valhalla Super Massive reverb. Took me a while to find all the settings I liked, but once I did I was hooked. Hope that helps.
