How is it possible that the STEEL is heavier than the BRASS, when the brass is denser than any kind of stainless steel alloy? Maybe you had the BRASS without cartridge / converter and the STEEL with it? Or the BRASS with an empty cartridge / converter and the STEEL with an inked one?

I have a question. Is it safe to refill the cartridges with the ink of your choice? My concern is about proper sealing when reusing the cartridges, so you don’t get ink leaking inside the pen.
@qvisionstudios
@qvisionstudios 8 ай бұрын
Perfectly safe and sometimes a better option than the Kaweco mini converters since the converter holds so little ink. The material used in the cartridges is either a type of polyethylene or nylon, so it's pretty flexible and forgiving for friction fit. Maintenance is the key. Clean out the cartridge - I use a syringe to blast water to remove all ink. Completely let them air dry out. Refill with your choice of ink using a syringe. I've reused the same cartridge quite a few times (upwards of 10-15 fills). I don't recall the exact number of times but I have dozens of used cartridges that I don't throw out so grab a random one and fill as needed. Just keep an eye on any that have developed cracks on the barrel or may have started to split. I haven't come across any that are loose, but that is a possibility if you use the same one over and over. If cracked or loose, just toss them and use the next one. But test fit a dry cartridge before filling to make sure it fits fine and isn't loose to avoid and mishaps.

Thank You. Are you referring to the silver end finial at the top of the cap? That should be secure. You may be able to pop it off an epoxy it back on so you don't lose it. The cap itself has a plastic liner inside (for Brass, Aluminum and Steel versions). If that is what you are talking about, it may be loose inside. I've heard some people have had that issue. Unfortunately, I never had to remove the liner before. All mine are secure and allow the pen to post securely without being loose. If I find out, I'll let you know how to fix it.

Namisu is based in Scotland,..and I don't think I own anything that is made in Scotland (assuming that is where it was made), so that adds a little "cool factor" for me as well. Did you ever ask Majohn or the selling shop about this leak problem? If there is a seal to replace, that would be good, or even to have Majohn replace the whole internal unit.
@qvisionstudios

I doubt Majhon would respond to any replacement options. The nib units are sealed and crimped one piece units and would be hard to take apart and put back together. This is one of those situations where you get what you paid for. Trouble free option would be to buy a genuine Pilot VP. The Majohn is still pretty good value for the price.

I thought you had a really good review, but were missing a key element. In comparing the different materials, I was hoping that you would also comment on how they felt in the hand and the balance and weight. I have several of the plastic Sports but am looking for something with a bit more heft and was curious about these metal ones.
@qvisionstudios
@qvisionstudios 10 ай бұрын
Good point. The weight assessment feel can be a bit subjective. But I understand your point of view. I, personally like something with heft that feels bit more tactile. Others may find a heavy pen tiring for long sessions. All of them need to be used posted for comfort and a balanced feel, unless you have tiny hands. Between the 3, for brass and steel are certainty considered very heavy. I like that for sketching and general doodling. The extra weight helps for smoother, fluid drawing strokes. The AL may strike a perfect compromise for long writing sessions for those that like a bit of weight and feel substantial compared to the plastic Sports. The ALs are my every day carry for mixed use (short notes, page long writes and drawing) and they get more use compared to the Plastic, brass or steel versions. From what you describe, I think you would be happy with an AL sport.

I got an A1 as a present for my doctor friend who I got into fountain pens because I, as a pharmacist, have used VPs daily for 3 years now and love them. Also, he has had issues with ink leaking in his monteverde, so not only did i figure a VP would be good for him due to the "quick draw" aspect, but ive also had no issues with ink leaking the whole time ive used my VP. After 4 days of using the A1 i am honestly bothered about how good it is. Dont get me wrong, I can still tell the difference and believe the VP is the superior product, but for how minimally inferior the A1 seems, it will be a great present, but i also feel a bit dirty about supporting the chinese cloning, despite how good the copy is. As of so far, i havent ran into the same ink spillage issue, but i will keep an eye out for it. Thanks so much for this video!

The A1 do represent a good value. Unfortunate they are only available in just the EF nib. Its a good inexpensive option if one isn't sure if they may like a VP or not. But that may lead people to buy the Pilot VPs which offer various nib sizes but also gold nibs. I do have several VPs that I enjoy and you can certainly feel the difference in quality with the nibs when writing. Having used the clipless A1, I think I still prefer the clipped VP or an A1 since the clip makes it easier to position the pen quickly for writing. Glad you liked the video. Appreciate your comments.

The patina is why most people buy the Brass Sport. It seems odd you would buy a pen that you have to keep polishing. The patina is different with every pen, and along with a scratch here and there, it's what gives a pen individual character. It's what makes the pen yours. Anyway, heavy pens are much better for long writing sessions, if you just ease your grip and let the pen do the work. I know it sounds logical that a light pen would be easier on the hand, but it simply isn't/ A light pen requires a firmer grip, and more control than a heavy pen. I spend twenty years using a fountain pen a medium of eight hours per day, and many days ran up to twelve hours. Occasionally longer. I learned very quickly from the pros that I did not want to use a light pen. They were so right. As soon as I started using a heavy pen, and relaxed my grip so the weight of the pen did all the work, my hand fatigue and cramping disappeared. There are fourteen Brass Sports in my fountain pen group. There are other metal Sports, too, but I only use the Brass Sport as a serious work pen, so it's the one I talk about. I'm long retired (officially) but still use fountain pen five hours every morning Monday through Friday, and every now and then on the weekend. I have many pens I love, including one that cost a hundred and fifty times what I Paid for the Brass Sport. Even my three daily carry, take anywhere and everywhere pens are not cheap. For years, they were the Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age, the Scribo Feel, and the Pilot Custom 823, which is fairly cheap. Now, however, the 823 is gone and the Brass Sport has replaced it. I know how heavy the Brass Sport is, but when writing with it the weight just disappears. The shortness of the pen puts the weight down on the nib, and I can write with it for hours without even noticing that it's heavy. Honestly, this pen isn't for everyone, and I hesitated buying it for years. It's small, it has a tiny nib, a tiny feed, and almost no ink capacity. It works better with cartridges, which I refill, than it does with the converter, and because of the tiny nib and feed it can go dry if you write too fast for too long, so what's to like? The Brass it's made of, and the beautiful patina, is what made me give it a try, and I love it to death. It was love at first write. I love it so much that I bought a second one and put a gold nib on it. Many fountain pen owners are used to writing with lightweight pens, and won't know how to use a heavy pen that has the weight on the paper, rather than on the hand, so they won't like this pen for that reason, or because of the tiny ink capacity, or whatever, but I find writing with it almost addictive, and I use it just as often as I do any of my much more expensive pens.
@qvisionstudios
@qvisionstudios Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input. Appreciate your experience as a user. I'm with you on the Brass Sport as others may be as well. It's not for everyone, but those that like a heavy but well balanced pen, it's a joy. The patina is a personal choice. Most time's I'll let mine go mellow gracefully, but like to start fresh every now and then. People who buy used brass pens may also want to start off fresh and let it patina from there on. You may also like one of the Kara's Kustom metal pens as well. I have the INK V2 in copper and that one is one of my favorites. It patinas really well as long as you keep using it and gets a light to dark sheen on it. If I stop using it, it gets a dull oxidation on it and a few days of use will restore that personal patina to it. Some may not like the copper smell on your fingers, but it stops once it builds that oxidation layer.

Put it in my bag and tried to use it 12 hours later and it's not writing. Using the cartridge and if I turn the pen, the ink stays stationary inside. If I tap it, the ink moves slightly. My VP if I turn it, the ink will slosh around. What's going on?
@qvisionstudios
@qvisionstudios Жыл бұрын
The Pilot cartridges and Converters have the small agitator balls which help break the surface tension of the ink and let it flow down. If you can scavenge the balls from old cartridges, you can use them. The other thing is the ink, using a "wetter" ink will help as it flows easier. The Pilot Iroshizuku inks are rated wet and work well but can be expensive. Any of the regular Diamine inks (non shimmer or sheening) are also great and economical. You didn't mention which ink you're using. You can add some dish soap to help make it flow better. The soap helps to reduce the surface tension. You don't need much. Take a sample vial with about 5ml of your ink and add just a toothpick tip dipped in soap, mix and try that out.

@@Swiss_Army_Knife1780 Ha Ha. Yes, agree with you on the sacrificial pen. Better a $30 pen than a $200 pen. I have two of the A1s (Clipless) and the first was a leak king. The second one has been just fine, so it's a hit and miss. It seems this is the norm from talking to other A1 users - a bit of a crapshoot on whether you get a good one or not. I also have one of the VP alloy nibs and personally, I don't see much of a difference in writing compared to the gold nibbed ones. The nib is so small that there just isn't a difference in bounce or feedback. I have swapped a VP stub and a broad into the A1s for a daily carry, the bodies themselves seem to hold up quite well for everyday use with little effect on the finish. Hope your experience is all positive when you receive yours. Keep us posted.

@@qvisionstudios First, I appreciate your silicone grease hack to prevent leaking from the Majohn A1 nib units. Second, I have had better luck with the special alloy nib ✒️ because it is drier. Paper in health care is the absolute cheapest grade, which is not necessarily a bad thing since more expensive paper might have a profound multiplier cost effect born by patients in addition to everything else. Generally, I prefer steel ✒️ because they are drier. As for the Majohn A1 ✒️, I will tweak them a bit but know exactly what you are referencing about variable quality control. I also ordered some other Majohn A1 🖋️ out of curiosity made of titanium: shameless copies of the stainless steel LAMY 2000 and Kaweco Sport. Ultimately, the body of the 🖋️ are excellent, but the nibs appear to be an afterthought with many 🇨🇳 🖋️. They are still fun, though, especially for those beginning their foray into the depths of the 🖋️ abyss. Some 🖋️ like the Wing Sung 601A are fun modern day equivalents of vintage 🖋️ unavailable today, or at least under $30 USD when thinking of some manufacturers such as Edison Pens. Anyway, despite my acerbic backlash, I hope that you are able to continue delving into 🖋️ from 🇨🇳 and elsewhere. While I might not be investing the equivalent of a Sailor Realo with a music ✒️ or Montblanc 149, it helps to know what others think about 🇨🇳 🖋️ because these pens should still write well enough to be carried every day.

The pilot nib you compared with the majohn, is that extra fine too? I’m wondering if I can put pilot medium nib in majohn body. Thanks

I can't remember, might have been a fine. But all the Pilot nibs I have are completely interchangeable with the A1. No issues. So if you ever wanted to upgrade your A1 to a Pilot gold nib, you can.

I’ve got this exact model coming in the mail. I’ve heard nothing but good things besides the leaking. If I like it enough I may get one with the clip in a different color just so I can see if I like it or not. I’m excited to write with it!

I think you'll like it. Hopefully yours doesn't have any issues. I've got two of the Clipless ones now. The second one has been problem free from the start. They make great everyday carry writers. Refill the cartridges since they hold more than the converters.

Same, i ordered one in November and three weeks later got a message saying it had been returned to seller due to a problem with the address, AliExpress refunded my costs immediately, which was a nice surprise, and I ordered another which is due in a couple of weeks. Watching this has got me excited again about a new pen.

Great review! Thanks for taking the time to do the whole long-term thing. I think I'm going to add this pen to my shopping list :-)

I was a Moonman enthusiast, until the day (1 month of using) when the coating of the body came off (a little scratch from the table when falling). the metal underneath will sufer rust now... I also noticed ink drying pretty faster compared with my Pilot vanishing capless: I had to recharge with ink 2-3 times more often. Overall, Moonman can be a great knockoff at the first glance but a real loss of money on the long run. Chinese products improved a lot since 90' BUT they still are cheap and waste of money when you are using them for more than 1-6 months.

Sometimes "You get what you pay for" is true. I'm not even sure how someone can get it replaced under warranty with some of these manufacturers. Do they even have a customer service contact number or email?

@@qvisionstudios they can replace it when the pen still is under 30 days after the delivery (merchant platform policy). But it's not worth of losing time when the low price is considered... Personally I have many cheap disappointments that I don't use anymore. It is better buying trusted brands because they are just beautiful to look at when not in use and it is always a whole rediscovery when you try them again!
