I have the Artis Woodhouse CD of ZC's piano rolls. Of his compositions there: Stumbling is easy; Dizzy Fingers I can do; Kitten on the keys I struggle with; Coaxing - no chance! Perhaps I could get our son, Matthew, to play it. He can play Greased Limelight by Robin Frost which I can't!

I am not sure of laws where you live but in the US, my friend makes guitars and does use ivory. It was legally procured when it was allowed to be harvested, and I assume your piano key tops are along those same lines.
@SamHallas194915 күн бұрын
I'm not sure either. I'll ask the piano repair chap if he can use it.
@modtwentyeight14 күн бұрын
I am no expert, but I think the keys are to "white" to be ivory.
@SamHallas194914 күн бұрын
The front edges of the keys were definitely some type of thermo-plastic as they curled up as I prised them off. They also appear whiter than the tops. The tops stayed flat.
@Flea-Flicker14 күн бұрын
@@SamHallas1949 Ivory has a grain like wood and it is very plain to see. If you have no grain it is most like plastic or what they used to call ivoroid.

What a shame. Think of all the joy that piano brought to everyone over the years. And the history that piano has seen. It hurts my soul to this instrument being dismantled.
@SamHallas194915 күн бұрын
I agree. But on the other hand, where were you when I wanted someone to take it away?
@Flea-Flicker15 күн бұрын
Not a shame. Every instrument has a life span, pianos last a very long time, but an average cheap consumer grade piano really is pushing it after it hits 50. Good pianos like Steinway, Bosendorfer, Fasioli, weren't either but they do survive way past 100 years because they are worth rebuilding and can be rebuilt because the original materials were higher quality.

Hi Sam. Im after a little help. Ive got a 332L GPO phone. Ive done a little research and found the dial is a '10'. Ive also found the schematic on the rear of the base cover. I have build a hidden door as a bookcase with the phone on the shelf. I want to be able use the phone as a switch to open the bookcase when i dial a number (ideally zero) i have a background in electronics so am happy with the wiring of a relay once i can use the dial as the switch. Any ideas? I hope that makes sense?

@SamHallas1949 Жыл бұрын
See earlier comments. In this context 'Strowger' refers to a mechanism that goes up and round as in Strowger's original patent en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strowger_switch. 2000 type is a British Post Office designation of one particular design. Aren't the switches on the right 4000 type anyway?

I lived in Stopsley during WW2 with my mother, my father was serving in the army. We would catch a green Eastern National bus to Hitchin market to buy a few vegetables that were not on ration. The bus on the way home always had a problem going up Offley hill and would sometimes stall. All the men would have to get off the bus as they could not start fully loaded. The men would then walk up the hill and get on the bus at the top.Happy days!

The caption is incorrect. There is one 2000 type and three SE50 type group selectors. The final selector is an SE50 type selector. Stowger selectors are different.
@SamHallas1949 Жыл бұрын
What was your point? The caption just says there's a mix, not which is what. We use Strowger as a generic to distinguish from rotary, crossbar, panel, digital, etc.

@@SamHallas1949 Thank you for your time and interest in placing a comment, Sam. It wasn't meant to create any offence or to get anyone offside. It was meant to point out that, Strowger exchanges used Strowger switches. Consequently, at least in my part of the world, exchanges that used 2000 and SE50 switches were referred to as SxS exchanges and those that used Strowger switches as Strowger exchanges. At the end of the day, it's not a big point. Great video, by the way, Sam.

The market for Telex in Australia collapsed in about 1984, for two reasons:- 1. The Sagem was an absolute heap of junk. About the most unreliable product ever made; After getting a bad reputation with the original Sagem TX20, they switched to a more advanced Sagem 2000, which was even worse. 2. The arrival of cheap fax machines from Japan - a fax machine is far quicker, easier, and cheaper to use than a telex machine - and you can fax diagrams. Telecom/Telstra continued to offer Telex to a declining niche market, eg hotels and travel agents, for many years afterwards, but businesses generally were not interested.
