This is a great comment! It's not that the bike is equal to a ball at all, it is that my dog could practice her chase drive on the ball every time a bike appeared. Playing ball wasn't something that just happened on every walk, it happened only when bikes came into view, which made it SUPER valuable to her, and VERY beneficial to me. There was also a little bit of management in place for the first 2 - 3 times she saw a bike to ensure she didn't practice chasing the bike whilst I introduced the new direction of chase (the ball). This part is important! Your dog's desire to react to everything that moves comes from her genetics, she is supposed to care about movement and is drawn to it. She will also likely be incredibly sound sensitive too, this is fairly normal for herding types such as Border Collies. Hi Emma, thanks for leaving a comment :) I'm a dog behaviour specialist and work with reactive behaviour every day. I have a series coming out for reactive dog advice and support. Some of your tips are helpful, but unfortunately, not all are correct. Dogs don't have a leader, we are a different species, also the pack leader theory was debunked by David Mech who created the original theory based on his observations of captive wolves. You can research this information online and find his latest research which is more accurate. Also, being in front doesnt help you watch their body language or allow them choices within the environment which can add to anxiety. In addition to that, by having your dogs full attention doesn't help to get them better with their triggers, this is distraction work, and can lead to dogs getting too close accidentally without realising the dog is there. Which can be dangerous. Working on a reward basis only when the dog does what you want them to only works if you have the same goal and desires in mind. Food comes down the line in a dogs desires if they are in stressful situations and if it is conditional to them doing what you want them to. Changing behaviour comes from praise and food being provided when the trigger appears, regardless of the dogs response. Hope this helps :-)
