Anyone can impersonate young Norm in his 30s. Impersonating 50-something Norm is alot tougher and Mohr does amazing.

Every German male born 1975 - 1985 grew up with original Married with children (German title was: Eine schrecklich nette Familie), it was dubbed for German television. The series was very popular in Germany and everyone knew it. The German copy with German actors was lame and nobody was interested in it.

Thinking back, one thing I would have loved seeing on 'married with children' is a Jon Lovitz character somewhere.

Dennis Miller said he auditioned for SNL at the same time Jon Lovitz was auditioning -- and said the only reason he got a bit on SNL was because it was physically impossible for Lovitz to do every skit.

There was actually a British version starring Russ Abbott in the mid-90s, who was a big comedian and star on TV on this side of the Atlantic in the 80's. I never saw it when it aired as I was living abroad at the time but by all accounts. It was called Married for Life it was said to have been dire. I saw a five-minute clip of it here and all I can say is my god!

I'm American. I had a two grandparents from Hamburg and two from Sicily. They were all here by 1927 at the latest. Ron Leavitt was an a-hole to say what he did to the German staff. It is very offensive to Germans and they know more about what occurred than Americans. They probably thought that Leavitt's levity was plain stupid. What most people don't realize is how anti-Semitic the United States was in the 1930s. Even the IBM numbers on concentration camp victims is evidence of this. The turning back of the St. Louis was typical of the anti-Semitism in the United States historically and of course that includes the 1930s and decades later. Gustav Schröder 27 September 1885 - 10 January 1959) was a German sea captain who saved 937 German Jewish passengers on his ship MS St. Louis from the Nazis in 1939. Americans know nothing about the situation in Europe during the last century. There is nothing funny about what Leavitt did but it is now part of a narrative for the masses of asses. Many German non-Jews were fearful of The Third Reich. Many were put into camps. This simple childish and stupid remark about Germans and Jews is ridiculous. But try and re-teach Americans or Brits about the complexity of the Nazi Regime. There has been too many decades of simplistic explanation. Besides, the American and many of the European industrialists were in bed with the regime of Hitler. Ford was another cliche' example but far more industrialists were more concerned about making profits and preventing advancement of the Russians taking over Europe than most people know. Franco asked for too much from Hitler. In exchange for entering the war alongside the alliance of Germany and Italy, Franco, among many things, demanded heavy fortification of the Canary Islands as well as large quantities of grain, fuel, armed vehicles, military aircraft and other armaments. In response to Franco's nearly impossible demands, Hitler threatened Franco with a possible annexation of Spanish territory by Vichy France. At the end of the day, no agreement was reached. A few days later in Germany, Hitler famously told Mussolini, "I prefer to have three or four of my own teeth pulled out than to speak to that man again!" Americans and even most Europeans know very little of that period and profess to have knowledge of it. They are total fools.

The reason the German version of MwC bombed was that the original -- dubbed into German -- was extraordinarily popular, and each episode was well-known. Why would anyone bother with rewatching the same shows they'd already been watching for years? With a cast they didn't know?

So they refer to Wetten, dass..? and the host back then was Thomas Gottschalk, so far so good. But RW never said that during the show and there are no commercials on this show. Robin left early bc the show had an average runtime of 3h which is kinda long to sit through after your show bet and interview is done. Don't know why this wrong narrative is employed here. Germans are pretty good at poking fun at themselves, we don't necessarily need our American friends to do it for us :D

I never stumbled upon the german MWC until now... Just looked it up - man, what a crap. Even the title "HIlfe, meine Familie spinnt" ("help, my family is crazy") is straight garbage. I only was familiar with the original (dubbed) show, seeing them first around 1997 (I was 9ish) here in Germany. Great show, was recognising the social critiques at a much later age, but, still...

These days you can't say anything about anyone in the US without the person taking offense, or you'll be immediately canceled, but it's perfectly fine to make terrible jokes about other countries - typical US hypocrisy.
