"Steek" is Dutch for "stitch" and "stab", just like in German.

I've been looking for a video explaining this for a little bit. Thanks for posting this. Has anyone used a seam ripper to cut open the steek?

You are magic! So clear and easily understood. My pattern called for brioche, and directed me to a website to learn it. I said to myself, "Nah. I'll just go to Nimble Needles." Sure enough, you had this vid. You always come through for us!

brilliant! you always have the solution to any of my knitting problems! I knit exactly like you, with my three fingers on the left needle - I couldn't figure out what to do with the loose yarn when i had rows of uneven colour stitches, till i came back to your video. thank you so much :)

I will say I am still not totally convinced that I can steek, but my confidence has grown some since watching this. I work a lot of fair isle in acrylic (I have wool sensitive wearers and also vegans who I knit for) and my question to you is if I were to make a 7 stitch (or possibly wider) steek and used a hair curling iron to 'melt/felt' the steek before cutting, how secure this would be? I guess I need to make a swatch and test it, eh? lol But what are your thoughts? Could laying a hot curling iron near/against an acrylic steek for long enough to melt the yarn create a secure steek? As always your videos inspire. How I wished I had started to follow you sooner.

Wow! Such a new idea ❤
@ByHookorbyNeedles7 сағат бұрын
@@crabwalk7773 Ahhh, but will it work? lol... I thought initially of an iron, but realised steeks are usually long and narrow and so thought a long hair curler iron might work. Like I say I should give it a go and see - in my mind I am thinking if the yarn melts there is no way its unravelling lol...
@jennaforesti5 сағат бұрын
If you use something to melt the yarn, maybe use some parchment paper to protect your iron from the melted yarn.
@ByHookorbyNeedles5 сағат бұрын
@@jennaforesti oh yeah, definitely would need something to protect the iron or hair curler etc.

Hi Norman, Thank you so much for this video, everything crystal clear. One question: Would be possible to apply the cotton stitch securing method to the wool projects since will create less volume? Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and best wishes for 2025 🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄. Italia

Hi Norman, You said you can’t felt super wash yarn. The idea that occurred to me is, can you use sheep wool for the steeking stitches? Then I guess they would felt?🥰
@NimbleNeedles12 сағат бұрын
Well, you could..but that would require intarsia...so..not sure if that makes things easier 😅

You are AMAZINGLY unique !😇🥰 Among the so many good, interesting, excellent, even fantastically pedagogic "Knitting KZbinrs"... You are, somehow... flying above the mass, the clouds and skies 🤩 I appreciate your exhaustive and cristal clear explanations, AND your thoughts about "How to make it better, why and how improve the way of making a model" This Entrelac video is the very proof of what I'm mentioning. You are not only an absolute knitter, you are the absolute knitting-thinker. You don't "only" give and show models, you get people to think "What am I doing , how, why, can it be better ?" You are the only one I know on YT who really makes me progress by making me understand my (wide) margin of progress !!! Thank you so much !

EXCELLENT video on steeking! Thank you for taking the time to review and explain all the options. I think a part of me has avoided trying a steek project because that makes the garment FINAL, as in no frogging for another project. Happy Christmas and New Year!

Yeah, i guess that is true. Then again, a lot of yarns are also very fuzzy and almost impossible to unravel as well. So, not sure if that is a hill I would like to die on, in the first place 😅

I feel you and I are similar regarding fastidiousness. Do you personally use shorter needles/cables, DPN's, or magic loop for smaller circumferences? I am stuck here.

@NimbleNeedles I just had a question Norman. I want to knit a sweater for my grandpa and the yarn I got is baby merino yarn that is sports weight. I want to knit a cabled sweater similar to aran sweater however I can't find any patterns with sports weight yarn. What do I do? Should I just go with a pattern with dk or aran yarn and see how many extra stitches I need.help meeeee

I initially looked this up (after decades of knitting) bc I noticed how in a very loose knit, my purl rows are always much tighter than my knit rows. Using this technique, they still are, but I'm now also questioning everything I ever did because I've never wrapped anything counter clockwise in my life and when I tried this, it didn't look right to me 😂

I bought a case from knitters pride specifically for interchangeable needles however it also has more than enough room to store my dpns as well as having space for some crochet needles and a few other odds and ends tape measure, size gauge etc. found it at Lindehobby
