My husband loves to fix stuff and has a ton of tools. Tons of tools. He asked me once to get him a screwdriver out of the screwdriver cabinet…I said “why do you need 100 screw drivers?!?!?!” And he responded, “why do you have 100 knitting needles?” Point taken! Handed him the screwdriver and have never mentioned excess tools again 😅

I absolutely love your message of more isn’t always more but often times it is less! I am donating my first interchangeable knitting needles (Knit Picks brand) to a school in a large metro area. There is a teacher there that has started a knit & crochet club for the kids and is always looking for donations to help encourage kids to take up the craft and provide materials for those that can’t afford it.

I inherited my Mother’s, Aunt’s, Mother-in-law’s knitting and crochet needles and yarn stashes adding to my own full collection. I was able to put together several full sets of straight needles. I always use circular or DP needles since it is earlier on my hands and shoulders. I donated the sets to schools, churches, and community centers, along with yarn. The groups were delighted for the resources and I cleared my collection of things I was never going to use. Win/Win for everyone.

Thank you Norman. I only use interchangeable circular needles and I finally landed on a system to store all the cables. I use a 30” long plastic pipe, 1” in diameter to store them in. I gather up one end of the cables and just use a twist tie to hold them together. I bought a 24” ruler decal and stuck it on the outside of the pipe so I can figure out how long the cable is when selecting one. My cables are always straight, all in one place and the tube fits neatly in my knitting drawer.

Cynthia, your solution got me thinking. I do a lot of Moebius knitting, so I have really long circulars. I could twist tie them to a hula hoop I already have, mark the hoop with a Sharpie for the different lengths, and store it behind my sofa. I'm excited to try this!

I’m grateful that you are aware of the influencing effect these videos may have on people and make a point to say to think about the money that you spend on the needles and do you actually need them. It’s so easy to get excited about all the things but also so important to be responsible. Love all your storage suggestions, also. I currently use a binder system for DPNs and circulars but am looking for a better alternative for my circulars.

Remember all those books we used to keepxcd's and DVD disc's in? Try had pickets for the discs,6 per page. I've repurposed mine by using them to store my circulars. I write on the plastic with a permanent marker the needle size,cord length and needle brand. It works so well(better than anything else I've tried!) And I feel good when I flip thru the pages knowing I repurposed something to a good use~!!

I love the hair tie idea....especially since I can't get them out of my hair!!! Yup, massively stuck!!!! Cut that sucker out!! 😂😂 Didn't know I could use the pieces. I actually keep a lot of my circular needles the original packaging & hang them on a pegboard by needle size!! Works VERY well, I consider it wall art!! And of course the interchangeable are in their respective holders. 😉 I look at more needles and think...."Do I need/want needles... Or more yarn". Sometimes it's a tough decision. I have a friend who likes fancy cigars, I snag the glass tubes for DPNs.

For those asking about straight needles, when I inherited my first set of straight needles from my grandmother, they came to me in a roll up case/pouch she had made a case for them. It is very similar to a lot of roll up makeup brush pouches i have seen.. It’s a large piece of felt (maybe 3ft/1 meter long, about 15” or a little less than 50 cm tall), with two other pieces sewn on top of it to make slots for needles. The shorter slot piece (just a little shorter than her shorter single pointed needles) was on top of the larger slot piece (again, just shorter than her longer single pointed needles), and both were sewn through the felt backing, both on the edges and for all of the vertical slots to hold the needles. The top edge folded over everything, and then the entire large pouch rolled up so that nothing would fall out. I currently have 100+ straight needles in it of 14 different sizes , and it feels about half to three-quarters full, and rolls up to a diameter of less than 6 inches/15 cm. And that pouch of light blue felt and white thread has held up for 40+ years. So for those looking for straight needle storage, this may be the trick for you!

I started on inexpensive needles & my husband bought me better ones for Christmas so I passed my old ones to a charity shop. When I got faster I went over to metal needles another pressie from hubby so again passed the old ones on. The only needles I keep but don't use were passed to me from my nan but I do use the notions they came with some of which you can't get anymore. Using these makes me feel closer to her as she taught me to knit.

Wonderful recap of storage possibilities. I especially admire your suggestion to give away items that you won't use again to charities, schools, etc. Others can experience the joy of knitting and creativity. Tip--I use portable toothbrush holders to store my double point needles and crochet hooks. Label the cases. It makes for each transport on the go and all of the containers store easily in a bin or box. Happy New Year.

I have those chunky 20mm needles too! A small suggestion to improve on the binder solution. You can use set of index pages (I don't know the official name of them) and sort the needles according to size. Personally I use a cardboard box from IKEA with a A5 size foot print for my circular needles. I keep them in their original bag and store them upright in the box, organized by size separating each size with card like old fashioned index cards. One box can hold atleast 20 pairs of circular needles like that.

I love the message of “you don’t need all of this to be a good knitter” I just got my first set of interchangeable circulars for Christmas and I have been so excited to use them, but I’m still learning so I know they won’t improve my knits, they will just make the job more enjoyable as I don’t really like working in the round on DPNs, and only use them when I’ve gotten to the point that my circulars are too big even with magic loop techniques.

I have used stretch ankle socks to store my circular needles, writing the size and length on each sock in black marker. I coil up the cable and then slip it in the sock. Then I just put them in a storage box. It's super easy to find what I need because they're so clearly and boldly labeled, and the socks will stretch to accommodate any size of tips and snuggly holds the coiled circs in place. I like to buy them in bright colors, just to have a cheerful rainbow to greet me when I open the storage box! 😊

I have a friend who still knits with straight needles. A few months ago I sent her all of my old straight needles. She was thrilled and I was able to get rid of needles I haven't used in years. I was storing my circular needles in a hanging contraption that I made from empty toilet paper tubes stapled together. A good friend of mine saw that and sewed me a beautiful hanging case similar to yours on the hanger. But mine is beautiful - made in my colors. It hangs on the wall in my craft room. All needles are visible at a glance. I have some DPN's in sturdy cardboard tubes that I've had forever and don't remember where they came from. I'm a magic looper so my DPN's don't get much use. At some point they may also be given away to someone who will love them. But for now the few that I have aren't in the way. The first few times I used a Tubular Italian Cast-on I found it easier to do on a straight needle than on circulars. So I did keep a couple of my old mis-matched straight needles in case I need one for that. You are brilliant. Thanks for another great video!.

Such great advice at the end! I have been using a plastic shoe box to hold my current projects and my needles. I own my first pair of metal straight needles, a set of Knit Picks interchangeable needles for mostly worsted yarn projects, and a tiny set of Chicago needles for sock yarn projects. I have a small pouch with zippered plastic sleeves for additional sizes of needle cords, plus one metal tin (Altoids mints) to hold a few of the notions I frequently use. I pretty much have all I need here. When I started to think about getting a project bag with storage, I searched and saved items but none of them spoke to me enough to switch. I'm glad I didn't buy anything else because I think this current setup suits me fine. I keep the shoe box next to my spot on the couch where I prefer to knit and pull it out as needed. When it's not in use, I close it up and put it away. It's great.

Thank you, Norman for your video. In the past years, I had decided to clean out my single point needles for an interchangeable set. I kept 1 set of single points that was given to me by someone special. Crochet hooks are cheap here in th US so I would buy the size I needed if I couldn’t find one at home. I kept the ones I liked the hook shape and gave the rest to my senior knitting group. I like the space I cleared up. Then I discovered pointier needles! Got a set of interchangeable needles. They came in a case and don’t take up much room. 😊

And now I have a reason to use my gifted sewing machine!! If I dig through 5 bags (and perhaps some wips 👀 ) looking for needles, then finding the right size (I use interchangeable sets for everything but socks…and then try and tell the difference between the 3 US 1s and 2s 🤦‍♀️) and always scrambling around, then getting stressed and not wanting to knit. I’m going to make one of those hanger things, even for my interchangeables (I’ll just attach them to a cord) and mark the sizes on the hanger thing. Even I could sew that!!! I really have become a knitter who just likes to do everything on circulars…and I have a few sets of DPNs (that came in a decent organizer bag) for tee-tiny things, like fingers on gloves. You’re holding the same Karbonz set that I have, and it does work pretty well…except the cords wind up…who knows where (I don’t have a lot of WIPs…maybe). A friend uses a box of hanging, expandable folders and uses the tabs to mark all of the fixed circulars, which is a good idea, but I like the idea of hanging them more so I’m not dealing with curled up cords. I don’t care about pretty…mine are in a room that isn’t on display. I like practical, inexpensive and efficient. Yes, Norman, shoe boxes are fantastic to store things in!! I like shoes, so I have shoe boxes that store lots of things!

Good video, of course. I'm glad you pointed out that we don't have to buy all the things for knitting. I love my Knitter's Pride needles and can't justify spending more money on more expensive sets. I'm not prone to quick choices based on videos I watch but I know some people are.

I loved your sage advice at the end Norman, I have 2 sets of interchangeable needles, and various fixed circulars, but I will only buy Knit Pro because that's what works for me. I won't be buying more needles (I hope) for many years. I do hope you're well, take care xx

A great coincidence as I was just about to go through knitting needles etc as part of an all round declutter. Very helpful tips and advice thank you. I love the hanging storage your friend made for circular needles. A great idea to have them easily to hand and stop them getting too curly.

17:40 I am currently using those for my crochet hooks and knitting needles! I just give each material their own shelf since I only have 2 sets of interchangeable needles (wood and stainless steel) in their original cases whereas the hooks are wood, aluminum, and resin, also in their original boxes. 1 group member in a discord I'm in did shame spew for the plastic since she uses those wood fountain pen display boxes on Amazon that cost $50-$100 each, everyone else used tin, wood, or fabric boxes while others used mugs or planters.

I never understood that kind of shaming. I mean, we all have different means but also different aesthetic preferences. I love exotic and super soft yarn but I'd never shame anyone for using arylic. What do i gain by that? Feeling superior because I own more money? Gee...that's kinda shallow and vain >.

IC needles are what I use the most and I found that I was becoming very frustrated with finding the right length cable. I ended up buying shorter binders and clear pages with a zippered opening. Each page holds a specific brand and length of cable (I have a lot of extra cables) and is labeled. The needles are kept in their original cases. Now it’s so easy to find what I need, it’s also easy to see what is missing and hidden in a forgotten WIP. I also keep my most used tools in a wicker basket that I can move around the house depending on the season. I love the tip for holding the DPN’s together. Another great video Norman!

You can use interchangeable circulars. Buy extra cords and put a stopper on an end but don't connect both needles to one cord. Works exactly the same.

I almost never bought any knitting needles. When people heard I was knitting, the gave me entire collections their grandma doesn't use anymore etc. This way I had some needles more than once and gave the supernumerary ones to other knitters :) For my DPNs I sew a case (like a pencil roll) and I just keep the round needles in sandwich bags with the number on, and all those bags I keep in a bigger bag 😂 I also made a list to know which numbers I have quicker if I want so start a project! The hanger for the round needles is a great idea, though, I need to sew one of these!

Thanks Norman! I've been meaning to donate my first straight needles and a few gift circulars I don't use. The hair elastics are genius. I have to keep my needles to a minimum because I also have crochet hooks and Tunisian crochet hooks. They all have to fit it one drawer of my craft dresser. My interchangeable needles and Tunisian crochet set have nice cases so that's easy. Crochet hooks are in a huge coffee mug (1+ litre capacity). I have 2 sets of dpns so i store them in DIY dpn cozies with the size embroidered on the outside. I also have a DIY needle book for needles, stitch holders, and progress keepers. The hanging circular needle holder your friend makes is very practical. I saw a similar ceramic holder in the shape of a skein of yarn once. Your point about plastic is well taken. One of my cases is canvas and it works perfectly. The leather ones are sooo expensive but beautiful. Not there yet ... I'd rather spend my money on yarn.

yeah, i mean..i always kinda roll my eyes (inwardly). When people see some of the knitter's pride sets in their plastic pouches they often start commenting that it looks cheap and it's plastic. And I'm typically: yeah, sure but it does the job as well!

Not an organization tip, but more of a warning. Always try to make sure to put your project inside something, even if you're just running to the kitchen for a snack. One of my cats chewed up my Addi circular needle cable (and several other cheaper ones) while I was at work. Ever try sliding your yarn past teeth marks? It doesn't work well.😂

I looked at designs online, and adapted one for my own (rather large) collection: the result is a tall, completely hand-sewn fabric roll that I love to use and am very proud of. It took me a month to complete it, so when it came to storing my circular needles, I chickened out and used a slightly cracked and chipped ceramic cookie jar. Works perfectly.

Great tips and advice as always. I use the manufacturer needle case for my one and only set of interchangeable needles. For all my other bits of paraphernalia i found a leather binder with zipper closure plastic envelopes which corrals everything else (stitch markers, counters, cable needles, crochet hooks, dpn's.......) absolutely everything i need at this time. So everything i have needed for the last few years fits neatly into these 2 cases, just add yarn.

My education taught me all different textile techniques, including sewing. So I was able to make my needle pouches myself. During the decades (I'm a knitter for almost 60 years now) of course it was needed to change to a different kind of needle pouch ... I got more needles, more circular needles, etc. Now my needles are organised in three types of storage: the 'traditional' straight needles with one point are in a beautifully hand-painted Chinese (or is it Japanese?) wooden needle box, the 'old-fashioned' long double-pointed needles are in a rolling-up pouch I made for them and both the short DPNs and the fixed circulars are sorted in size in a wall-hanger (I made too). And then I have a modern interchangeable set named 'Mindful', by KnitPro, that came in its own beautiful turquoisy blue pouch. Btw my thinnest needles (long DPNs) are 1 mm and my thickest needles are 1 cm (= 10 mm).

I have a binder with plastic inserts that is gathering dust as I progressively stoped using it and now I just hang all of my circular needles on a simple hook on a shelf. It's messy but I like the ease of use. But I do sew and can easily make that organizer on the hanger so I will consider making one. Thank you for that idea.
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 6 ай бұрын
yeah, same here. The binder sounds like a good idea and it kinda is..but it never worked for me. And sure, try it out..it's super easy to sew and really doesn't need to be fancy. Just two pieces of cloth where you sew over every 2 inches or so ^^
