"I only need eval bar." I would like to see this tested in real life. I don't know how, but let's say every player has to wear a heartbeat monitor. And this monitor can vibrate. In a tournament of 14 people, 3 of them are getting "notifications" (HR monitor vibrates) when there is one only move, or blunder from the other side. But not every game. Every other game. Would they play much better? Would they perform better in games where they are getting notifications? Because I hear these claims all the time, but it always based on the feelz. If cheating OTB is such a huge problem, surely some kind of testing can be arranged, and I wonder, if you could find games where cheaters got notifications.
@leterryle
@leterryle 5 күн бұрын
I don't know if there was anything like that OTB. But recently Hikaru released a video where he plays online chess in a format where the eval bar is visible to the players. Of course, it is impossible to draw definitive conclusions from one person. But in his case, it only hindered him, because on the eval bar you can understand not only how good your position is, but also how bad it is. And in the second case, it knocks down the mood. As I understand it, the assessment of the position of the grandmasters and the engine may differ quite a lot. Where the grandmaster thinks he's doing well, the engine may disagree. And such a discrepancy can further damage mood and self-confidence. It seems that those who say "I only need eval bar" don't consider it at all. It's like they always have a good position in their head.
@alpha007org
@alpha007org 5 күн бұрын
@@leterryle I understand. That's why I said OTB, and after the fact analysis. I don't know, but I'm leaning more to the side that "notifications" would hinder more than help performance. But that could be countered with a good system of when you actually get notifications. It would be very hard to come up with this kind of tournament. You would have to keep it a secret that some are definitely cheating, but that wouldn't be moral and fair to others. And if you are a good player, would you even accept the role of a cheater? Anyhow, the point is, I hate it when chess players made broad statements like "I would be invincible" (paraphrased) with only the eval bar. And accusing / insinuating others only on vibes and feelz.
@leterryle
@leterryle 5 күн бұрын
@@alpha007org yeah, I got it. It's just that this is the closest we can get, considering, as you said, it's extremely difficult to arrange such a thing OTB. But maybe someone else will be interested in the competition with the eval bar + an interview with David Smerdon here :) > And if you are a good player, would you even accept the role of a cheater? Dubov mentioned somewhere that he offered chesscom an experiment where he would cheat, and they would publish their reports from the anti-cheating system. I think it's possible to find such players. Especially when some tops cheat, but they find excuses for it. But in general, yeah, I agree with you.
@TheBlade1985
@TheBlade1985 4 күн бұрын
They aren't based on feels. It's the same as when you are given a position in a book telling you it's mate in 2 or whatever. You're gonna find it for sure. You're gonna definitely look for mate at least. Many times you see even grandmasters or even Magnus missing mates in two when they have seconds on the clock. Here of course we're not talking so simple situations but nonetheless, in critical positions one good or bad decision is enough to change the outcome of the game, especially the higher the level of the players, because obviously they have the technique to convert an advantage. So when you see the eval bar and you know that now you have a decisive move, this can really be a factor!

Dubov likes to talk so much about the fact that it is impossible to identify a cheater if he turns on the engine only for a couple of moves, because that's exactly how he cheated himself (he admitted this himself in an interview). He believes that cheating in regular online matches is not cheating. But it just looks like a loophole to justify himself. Either any online cheating is cheating, and then Dubov shouldn't talk about it. Or online games are not important at all, which means why discuss it at all and make a tragedy out of it?

Dubov said that orgs anti-cheating measures isn't good enough. Which is true. Chess community is very conservative. And cheating become existential treat to chess not so long ago due to technological progress. All this time elite chess was stable only because of mutual trust of players in each other integrity. So when this mutual trust will be broken, it will be almost impossible to come back. This is why Niemann case is very important to chess. Dubov said that players just need to stop play with Hans so orgs wouldn't invite him on the first place and this problem will be solved. But if not than orgs should invest more into security. Maybe you don't follow Dubov before and he is not great speaker on English but his position very clear, the most constructive between all top players who speak on cheating topic which I follow and keep his word. He said month ago that don't come to play with Hans if somehow they will be pairing and he did it.
@dr.floridamanphd

The problem with Hans is that he’s a legend in his own mind. He’s thinks he’s better than what he is and that mentality breeds arrogance. The top players don’t actually respect him and don’t want to play him due to his antisocial personality. Then there’s the cloud of suspicion over his win over Magnus in St Louis a few years ago. He was in a losing position and somehow came back to beat the greatest active chess player today. I have my own personal suspicion that Hans is an addict and that his drug use and abuse clouds his judgment and he resorts to cheating to maintain his place in the top 20.

@ so according to every source out there, Hans was in a losing position against Magnus in the Sinquefield Cup. It’s been described as a “come from behind” victory against the best end game player in the world. I’ve even seen it described by experts as “miraculous.” He somehow started finding all of the best moves possible to win in a game he was clearly losing. Even Chesscom’s own report of the incident said it was highly suspicious but couldn’t say with 100% certainty that he cheated. Hans’ performance since then hasn’t proven anything to justify his skill and his meteoric rise in rating had come much later than his peers which is also highly suspicious. Everything about Hans’ playing indicates cheating. Not even he has been able to explain it other than saying idiotic things like “the chess speaks for itself.”

Dubov is such a worm, mentioning Topalov. We know he Dubov himself cheated in online chess. He admitted to this. Kramnik also cheated in online chess. Was caught & got banned. Though we cannot be 100% sure if he also cheated using an engine. Probably, he has, but we don't have evidence. I also am quite sure that Kramnik was actually the one cheating vs Topalov. And him cheating himself causes his paranoia. Anyway, the whole debate about if you can catch a cheater is pretty silly. The way cheating for most people work is that if they do not get caught, they get more bold. They are going to cheat very carefully initially. But when they don't get caught, they start to take more and more risks. Until they do get caught. The thing about 'I only need to know the eval at the crucial time to win' is true, but silly. Because no cheater is going to keep using that method.

I find this subject particularly interesting as I got serious about chess when I was already significantly older than these two are today. Yet, within a few years I managed to get all my online ratings above 2k with bullet being my strength hitting 2400. I did this primarily through playing lots of games and consuming chess content on yt on a daily basis. About 1.5 years ago I decided to get serious about chess as I felt that I hit a ceiling - a ceiling determined by lack of knowledge as opposed to a biological ceiling. I firmly believe that I'm still improving and will easily gain another 200 rating points if I continue playing and training. So, I agree, I don't think 40 or even 50 years old is a cognitive death sentence. Human potential is truly limitless and we just need to find what works for us. Maybe even a 60 year old can make a lot of progress in chess if they are in good health and have the discipline to spend hours a day on chess. EDIT: my starting rating was 1400 and I gained roughly 100 rating points per year. I also had no formal training.
